A keyboard is an input device that turns key presses into text, commands, navigation, or control signals. Typing is its best-known role, but keyboards also help people move through software, play games, control music systems, and enter specialized languages or workflows. These five categories are a practical way to understand keyboard use, not an official or exhaustive taxonomy.
1. Typing text and entering data
Keyboards let people write messages, documents, code, and other text, as well as enter numbers and structured data. Their familiar arrangement reflects a direct link to typewriters and teletypes: early computer designers adopted existing text-entry devices rather than inventing a wholly new way to type. The Computer History Museum’s keyboard history describes that transition and the persistence of familiar letter layouts.

QWERTY is the most recognizable example for users of Roman alphabets. The museum dates its patent to 1878 and summarizes its history this way: “Contrary to urban legend, QWERTY was designed to speed, not slow, typing.” That historical account does not establish that QWERTY is the fastest or best layout for every person or task.

2. Giving commands and navigating interfaces
Keyboards do more than enter letters. Function and special keys can invoke software actions; arrow keys can move a cursor or selection; and other keys may accept, cancel, or change an on-screen choice. Their effect depends on the software and the active screen.

Historical instructions for the Community Memory system, preserved by the Computer History Museum Archives, show users responding to prompts with YES, NO, and HELP keys, browsing choices, and moving a cursor with arrows. The example illustrates a continuing principle: keys can serve as compact controls for an interface, not just as symbols on a page.
3. Playing games and using interactive software
In games, key presses can move a character, select an action, or control an interactive scene. The exact mapping varies by game, and keyboard input is only one option; a controller or another input device may suit a particular game or player better.

The museum’s PDP-1 Restoration Project places the early computer game Spacewar! within the history of interactive computing. It is an example of software responding to user input, rather than evidence that every game is designed for keyboard play.

4. Controlling music and creative work
Some keyboards are designed to enter musical notes or control music systems. A piano-style keyboard is distinct from an ordinary computer keyboard: its keys correspond to musical pitches rather than letters and commands.

The Computer History Museum’s account of the GROOVE system describes an operator using knobs, switches, an electric typewriter, and a joystick; a piano keyboard was added later to help control generated music in real time. This is a specific example of keyboard-like input in creative computing, not a claim that every computer keyboard functions as a musical instrument. See the museum’s history of music, film, and computers.
5. Supporting specialized languages, bodies, and tasks
Keyboard designs can be adapted for the language being entered, the task at hand, or the physical arrangement of keys. Documented examples include input methods for Chinese, arrangements supporting Arabic and Roman characters, configurable keys, and ergonomic forms.

The museum’s keyboard exhibit describes designs such as SafeType and Maltron. Its collection entry for the 1978 Maltron keyboard arrangement says Lillian Malt’s design accounted for hand anatomy and the frequency of letters and successive keystrokes. Those descriptions establish design aims; they do not establish clinical benefits or prove that one layout improves performance for everyone.
Why keyboards became a direct way to use computers
Keyboard input was not always the default way to communicate with a computer. In the 1950s, instructions were commonly supplied through punched cards, paper tape, dials, and switches. The Computer History Museum’s 1956 computer-history timeline recounts MIT researchers’ exploration of direct keyboard input. A Flexowriter connected to an MIT computer was proposed as a relatively inexpensive, flexible input device, and a later Whirlwind experiment demonstrated its convenience; the museum describes this in its account of MIT’s Whirlwind keyboard-input experiment.

How to think about different keyboard types
“Keyboard” names a family of input devices rather than one fixed design. A practical choice depends on what you need to enter and how you will use it. Consider:
- Task: general typing, data entry, game controls, music input, or a specialized workflow.
- Language and layout: the characters and input method you need, and whether the key arrangement supports them.
- Size and key grouping: which keys you need close at hand and how much desk space is available.
- Physical shape and adjustability: whether the layout and placement feel workable for your own use. A design described as ergonomic is not, by itself, proof of a health benefit.
- Connection and compatibility: how the keyboard connects and whether it works with your device and software.
Historical sources document this range of purposes and designs, but they do not establish current popularity, product prices, performance rankings, or health outcomes. They also do not show that one layout is universally superior.
