For close-up stills and macro, consider the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7; for high-frame-rate action video, consider the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. For the other three options below, verify the exact camera-and-housing combination against current manufacturer documentation before buying or diving. These are feature-based candidates, not a tested performance ranking.
How to choose an underwater camera
Start with the images you want, then check depth and the complete camera system. A camera’s body rating is not the same as a compatible housing’s rating, and a generic waterproof case is not proof that a particular setup is safe or compatible.

- Output: Choose around your priority: macro and still photography, general video, or action and point-of-view footage.
- Depth: Check the camera body’s stated limit and, if needed, the rating for the exact housing or case separately.
- Compatibility: Confirm the camera, housing, memory card, lights and other accessories work together. Follow the current manuals for fit, use and maintenance.
Five underwater camera candidates
1. OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7: compact stills and macro
The TG-7 is a strong candidate when close-up still photography matters. OM SYSTEM lists 12 MP effective pixels, RAW capture, macro modes and 4K/30p video. In microscope mode, the manufacturer lists a closest focusing distance of 1 cm. The camera body is rated waterproof to 15 m. OM SYSTEM lists the PT-059 as an underwater housing accessory, but the product information cited here does not establish that housing’s depth rating. Check its current manual and rating before using it for deeper scuba dives. OM SYSTEM TG-7 specifications.

DJI lists a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, 4K (4:3) recording up to 120 fps and approximately 40 MP still-photo output. The camera is rated to 20 m without the Waterproof Case and 60 m with that specific case. DJI recommends the case for long-duration underwater shooting or high water-impact pressure. Match the camera to the kind of footage you want
- Small subjects and still photos: The TG-7’s manufacturer-listed RAW, macro and microscope-mode features make it the clearest fit among these candidates for close-up subjects.
- Fast action and high-frame-rate video: The Action 5 Pro’s listed 4K modes up to 120 fps make it the most clearly specified video-first option here.
- A dedicated dive-camera approach: Consider the SeaLife Micro 3.0 category, but establish its current specifications and depth rating from SeaLife before choosing it.
- Action-camera alternatives: The HERO13 Black and Ace Pro 2 may suit an action-camera workflow, but confirm their exact underwater housing requirements and limits before purchase.
Before taking a camera underwater
- Identify the exact setup. Write down the camera model and the specific compatible housing or case; do not assume accessories for one model fit another.
- Check the rating that applies to your dive. Read the current camera and housing manuals. Use the housing’s own depth limit when the camera is inside it, and follow all stated conditions.
- Confirm accessories. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for memory cards, lighting and other equipment. DJI, for example, publishes recommended microSD card models on its specifications page.
- Follow preparation and care instructions. Use the current manual for assembly, sealing, operation and post-use care; a depth rating alone does not establish that an incorrectly assembled setup is safe.
