Before buying, compare the quote and Insurance Certificate against the policy documents that apply to your quote date: they set your sums insured, excesses, optional cover and specified items.
What does Budget Direct Home and Contents Insurance cover?
Budget Direct lists cover for storm (including cyclone) and rainwater, fire, theft or attempted theft, escape of liquid such as a burst pipe, impact such as a fallen tree, breakage of glass, ceramic and sanitary fixtures, malicious damage, vandalism or riot, explosion, earthquake and tsunami. The applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), any Supplementary PDS (SPDS), and your Insurance Certificate determine the actual terms, limits and exclusions. Budget Direct’s cover summary is not a substitute for those documents.

Home and contents are different sums insured
Home cover relates to the insured building; contents cover relates to belongings such as furniture, electrical appliances, clothing, valuables and fitted carpets. Check that each sum insured reflects the cost of replacing what is covered. The certificate records the selected sums insured, excesses, optional covers and specified contents. Items and benefits may be subject to sublimits, so a large overall contents sum does not necessarily mean every individual item is covered for its full value. Budget Direct’s contents information describes the broad categories of belongings covered.
Flood is optional
Flood cover is a separate optional extra, subject to eligibility, underwriting and additional premium. Do not assume that storm or rainwater cover means flood is included: check the policy’s definition of flood, whether the option appears on your certificate, and any event-specific conditions. Budget Direct lists other optional benefits including motor burnout, accidental damage, personal effects, commercial storage and sum insured safeguard. Landlord options may include tenant default or tenant theft and malicious damage. Availability depends on the policy and selected cover. Check Budget Direct’s options summary and then verify the wording in your policy documents.
Which exclusions and limits need particular attention?
Budget Direct gives examples of damage that may not be covered, including pre-existing damage, leaking showers, lack of maintenance, vermin or insect damage, faulty workmanship and chemical damage. These examples are not a complete exclusion list. The policy documents define the terms, conditions and event-specific exclusions that apply to your cover. Tenant-caused loss is not covered unless relevant optional landlord cover is selected.
Portable belongings and valuables
Standard contents cover is tied to the insured home. If you want cover for belongings taken away from home, check whether Personal Effects Cover is available and selected. Budget Direct’s FAQ states that unspecified personal effects have a maximum of $1,000 per item, with an event-level total limit selected from $1,000 to $5,000. Specified personal effects are individually described and valued. The option costs extra and requires insurer approval; confirm the limits and terms for your policy. See Budget Direct’s FAQ.
Temporary accommodation and liability
Budget Direct’s contents page describes temporary accommodation for up to 12 months if the home becomes uninhabitable because of an insured event, and legal liability cover up to $20 million. These are insurer-published maximum benefit summaries, not a guarantee that every expense or situation is covered. Check the applicable PDS and SPDS for conditions, exclusions and any relevant sublimits, including debris removal. The contents cover page sets out the headline benefits.

How do quote details and excesses affect your cover?
Budget Direct asks for information that can affect eligibility, underwriting and price. Its quote-preparation guidance includes the property address, occupancy, building type and age, construction materials, estimated replacement cost, business use, insurance and claims history, and requested extras. It asks about claims over the previous five years. For contents, prepare an estimate of total value and note high-value or portable belongings. Review the quote information to prepare before entering details.
The selectable basic excess is listed as $100 to $5,000 on Budget Direct’s options page. A fixed excess may also apply based on perceived risk and underwriting; landlord cover may carry a four-weeks-rent excess, while earthquake and tsunami have a $500 excess in the stated policy-options summary. These figures are not a substitute for your own certificate: confirm every applicable excess there before purchase. Check the options and excess information.
A lower premium may come with a higher excess or fewer selected benefits. Compare what you would pay yourself after a claim as well as the recurring premium, and check whether the excess applies per event or in another way under the applicable policy wording.
Which policy documents apply to your quote?
Auto & General’s document register lists a Budget Direct Home Insurance PDS applicable to new policies quoted on or after 21 September 2023 and renewals on or after 29 October 2023. It also lists a June 2026 SPDS applying to new policies quoted on or after 25 June 2026 and renewals on or after 2 August 2026. The register says to use your quote or Insurance Certificate to determine which PDS Part B applies. Dates matter: check the document set associated with your quote or renewal rather than assuming the latest webpage summary is your contract. Consult Auto & General’s Budget Direct document register.

How should you compare Budget Direct with other insurers?
There is no independent, like-for-like market price study or independently measured claims-outcome comparison established by the insurer’s official material cited here. A meaningful comparison requires live quotes for the same property, sums insured, options and payment period; a marketing claim or one household’s premium cannot establish that one policy is generally cheapest.
Get quotes from at least two alternatives and compare the actual documents and certificates against Budget Direct’s. Use the same property details and cover assumptions, then check:
- Flood: whether it is included or optional, its definition, eligibility and premium.
- Sums insured and contents: building and contents amounts, specified-item limits and cover for belongings away from home.
- Options: accidental damage and any other benefits you need, and whether each is included or costs extra.
- Excesses: the basic excess and any additional, fixed or event-specific excesses.
- Exclusions and eligibility: restrictions that could affect your home, location, occupancy or intended use.
- Claim benefits: temporary accommodation, liability and debris-removal limits, plus the claim settlement basis.
- Total cost: the premium over the same payment period, accounting for any excess or optional-cover differences.
Budget Direct says annual payment may be slightly cheaper overall than other payment arrangements, but the actual price is quote-specific. Use the amount and payment schedule in your quote, not a general estimate. Budget Direct’s quote guidance recommends preparing your details before comparing.

What should you know about discounts and the claims process?
Discounts and the ASIC case
Budget Direct’s homepage terms for new policies quoted on or after 20 August 2026 state that a 15% online discount applies for the first year to eligible new policies purchased or quoted online. The terms say an online quote may qualify if the customer later buys through the contact centre and supplies the valid quote reference as requested. Confirm the terms and your eligibility in the quote; do not assume that all customers qualify for the maximum combined discount. Check Budget Direct’s current homepage terms.
Best Value
ASIC reported in 2026 that it had sued Auto & General over alleged misrepresentations in Budget Direct discount advertising. ASIC said the relevant advertisements ran from March 2020 to July 2024 and that approximately 39,000 customers lost an online discount after making policy amendments during that period. The release describes allegations, not a final court finding; it also reports that consent orders were made for the matter to progress on 30 March 2026. No final outcome should be inferred from that announcement. Read ASIC’s media release.
Making a claim or complaint
Budget Direct says claimants should take reasonable steps to prevent further loss, report theft, attempted theft, malicious damage or vehicle impact to police, and provide full incident details and supporting documents. It assesses claims against the customer’s policy; a claim may be accepted in full, partly accepted or declined. The insurer lists an inactive policy, pre-existing damage and an applicable exclusion among possible reasons for a partial or declined claim. These process descriptions do not establish claim acceptance rates or service quality. Read the claims guidance.
If you are dissatisfied, Budget Direct’s complaint guidance says it will acknowledge a complaint within 24 hours or as soon as practicable. If the matter is not resolved to your satisfaction within five business days, it says the complaint is escalated to its Customer Disputes Resolution Team. If you remain dissatisfied with the final decision, you may complain to AFCA. See Budget Direct’s complaint process.
