When your Apple Studio Display speakers go silent on macOS, it’s usually an output selection or audio routing issue—not a dead speaker. macOS can also “stick” to the wrong audio device after sleep, app changes, or Bluetooth reconnects.
This guide walks you through the highest-success fixes in a logical order, using the exact controls you’ll see in macOS. If you’re in a hurry, start with Tip 1 and Tip 3—those catch the majority of cases.

Why Studio Display speakers stop working on macOS
Studio Display (with its built-in display and speakers) can act as an audio output device via the same connection that powers and carries data. When macOS thinks a different device is available—or when audio routing gets stuck after sleep—sound may stop without any obvious error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon triggers include switching apps (especially conferencing tools), connecting Bluetooth audio, changing output device preferences, or after a macOS update that refreshes audio services.

Before you start: prerequisites and quick checks
- Confirm the speakers aren’t just turned down: Use the Studio Display volume buttons (or the macOS volume control) and watch for on-screen volume changes.
- Check for audio output changes: If you recently used AirPods, a Bluetooth speaker, or a headset, macOS may still be routing audio there.
- Know your macOS version: Go to System Settings > General > About (or System Preferences on older macOS) so you can match menu names to your version.
- Restart is not optional: Some fixes require restarting the audio subsystem or your Mac to fully reset routing.
5 Tips to Fix Apple Studio Display Speakers Not Working in macOS
1) Confirm the Studio Display is the active audio output
macOS may still be set to output to Bluetooth, HDMI, or a different device. Use the menu bar: click the Control Center volume icon (or press Option + click the volume icon), then pick Studio Display under Output.
If you don’t see it, check whether the Studio Display appears at all in System Settings > Sound > Output. If it’s missing, move to cable/power checks in the advanced section.
2) Raise volume using the correct on-screen controls
Even when Output is correct, volume can be effectively muted at multiple layers. First, raise volume from Control Center > Volume. Then, open System Settings > Sound and confirm the output volume slider for Studio Display is not near zero.
Also check Balance: if left/right is skewed, you might perceive “no sound,” especially with certain test audio. Set Balance back to center.
3) Check macOS Sound settings (output device, balance, and mute)
Go to System Settings > Sound (or System Preferences > Sound). Under Output, select Studio Display. Then confirm these items: Mute is off, Output volume is up, and Balance is centered.
If your macOS shows Headphones or Line Out alongside Studio Display, select Studio Display explicitly. Some apps also remember their own output behavior—if a single app is silent, test another audio source like YouTube in a browser.
4) Reset the audio path by restarting key components
Audio routing issues after sleep are common. Try this sequence: restart your Mac, then re-select Studio Display as the output device. After reboot, play a test sound (for example, play a video on YouTube) and confirm the volume changes affect the speakers.

If you want a faster reset before full reboot, stop and relaunch the app currently playing audio, and disconnect/reconnect any peripherals that could grab audio output (Bluetooth devices, USB headsets, audio interfaces).
5) Update macOS and Studio Display firmware, then retest
macOS updates can include audio-related fixes, and Studio Display firmware can update when conditions are right. Check for macOS updates at System Settings > General > Software Update (or System Preferences > Software Update). Install any available update, then restart.
To check firmware for Studio Display, open the Mac app System Settings and look for the display firmware entry if available in your macOS version; otherwise, ensure your Studio Display is connected directly and remains powered during the update. After updating, re-select Studio Display in Output and retest.
Advanced troubleshooting if the five tips didn’t solve it
If the output is correct and volume is up but you still hear nothing, treat this like a connection or system-routing problem. Work through the checks below in order.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchVerify cable and power details
On Studio Display models, use the correct cable type and ensure it’s fully seated. If you’re using a hub, adapter, or extension, bypass it temporarily: connect the Mac to Studio Display directly using a supported cable.
Also confirm Studio Display shows normal behavior (brightness control, menu responsiveness). If the display isn’t fully initializing, audio won’t route reliably.
Test with another Mac (or switch ports)
If possible, connect Studio Display to a different Mac. If speakers work there, the issue is isolated to your original Mac settings or software. If speakers still don’t work, the problem is more likely connection/firmware/hardware related.

If your setup involves a docking station, try a different port on the docking station or avoid the dock entirely.
Check for Bluetooth audio interference
Bluetooth devices can override output even when they’re not actively playing. Turn Bluetooth off temporarily: open Control Center and toggle Bluetooth off, then test audio again with Studio Display selected as Output.
If this fixes it, reconnect your preferred Bluetooth device and confirm output returns to Studio Display when you want it to.
Try Safe Mode to isolate third-party audio effects
Safe Mode can help rule out third-party audio tools, kernel extensions, or background utilities that mess with audio routing. Reboot into Safe Mode, then test with a simple sound source like macOS System sounds or a YouTube video.
If speakers work in Safe Mode, remove or disable recently installed audio utilities and try normal boot again.

| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| No sound at all | Wrong output device or muted output | Control Center Output selection + System Settings Sound output volume |
| Sound only in some apps | App-specific output selection or per-app routing | Test another browser/app; reset the silent app’s output settings |
| Distorted, crackly, or very quiet | Bad cable connection, wrong output mode, or audio effects | Swap cable/dock; disable audio effects and restart Mac |
| Works after reboot but fails after sleep | Audio routing doesn’t recover from sleep | Re-select Studio Display in Output; disable/refresh Bluetooth devices |
No sound at all
Start with Tip 1 (active output) and Tip 3 (Sound settings: mute/balance/volume). Then confirm the correct output is selected in the app you’re using—browsers and conferencing tools sometimes store their own output.

Try a clean test: play a short video on YouTube, then open a different app (like a music player). If both fail, focus on connection/cable and system settings.
Sound works in some apps but not others
Many apps (especially video conferencing and browsers) offer an internal speaker selector. In the silent app, locate its audio/output settings and select Studio Display explicitly.
Recommended Free Tools
If you’re on macOS 14/15, also confirm the app has microphone permissions set correctly—audio apps sometimes change devices based on permission and input activity.
Audio is distorted or very quiet
Quiet or distorted audio is often a routing mismatch, cable/dock issue, or an audio enhancement setting. Disable any audio effects in the app, then check System Settings > Sound for output volume and balance.
Next, bypass your hub/dock and connect directly to the Studio Display. If distortion disappears, the dock/cable is the bottleneck.
Sound cuts out after waking from sleep
After sleep, macOS can re-enumerate devices and pick the wrong output. Fix it by selecting Studio Display again in Output and making sure no Bluetooth device is active.
If it keeps happening, update macOS and then test again. Audio routing bugs often improve with point releases.

Alternatives: use headphones/line out while you troubleshoot
If you need audio immediately, plug in headphones or use a known-good external speaker temporarily. That confirms the Mac’s audio hardware is fine.
While troubleshooting, keep your Studio Display selected as Output whenever you’re testing. Mixing output devices makes it harder to tell whether a fix actually worked.
FAQs
Why does my Studio Display show up in Output but still makes no sound?
If the device is selected but silent, check mute and volume at both layers: Control Center > Volume and System Settings > Sound. Also verify app-specific output settings—some apps override the system output choice.
Could a Bluetooth device cause the Studio Display speakers to stop working?
Yes. macOS may keep sending audio to a previously connected Bluetooth device. Toggle Bluetooth off, then confirm Output is set to Studio Display and test again.
How do I reset audio on macOS when the Studio Display won’t work?
The most reliable “reset” is restarting the Mac and then reselecting Studio Display in Output. If you want a lighter attempt, restart the app playing audio and disconnect/reconnect audio-related peripherals.
What if the Studio Display isn’t listed at all in Sound > Output?
That usually points to a connection issue: reseat or replace the cable, avoid docks/adapters temporarily, and ensure Studio Display is powered and responsive. Testing with another Mac can quickly confirm whether the problem is on your Mac or the display connection.
Bottom Line
Most “Studio Display speakers not working” problems come down to output selection, mute/volume state, or routing getting stuck after sleep or Bluetooth changes. Start with confirming Studio Display is the active Output, then verify volume/balance in macOS Sound settings.
