Self-hosting turns a spare computer or home server into a place to build services around your own routines. Try a locally controlled smart home, a personal media library, a photo and file archive, an RSS dashboard, or a game server for friends. Each is a hands-on project—not a promise of effortless setup, automatic security, or built-in backups.
What self-hosting adds to a tech hobby
Self-hosting means running a service on hardware you control. One host may support several projects, but the right setup depends on what each workload needs. You can start by exploring software on hardware you already own; there is no universal minimum specification established for these projects.

The appeal is partly practical and partly creative: you can shape a service around your own home, library, or reading habits, then learn how its pieces fit together. The trade-off is that you take responsibility for maintaining the host and the data on it. Local control alone does not guarantee security, uptime, or a recoverable copy of your files.
1. Build a locally controlled smart home
Home Assistant is a home-automation project designed to run on hardware in your home. Its getting-started guide walks through choosing hardware, adding integrations, and creating automations. The project estimates that most people can go from a fresh install to a working smart home in about an afternoon; that is Home Assistant’s estimate, not an independently measured setup time. The hobby is designing useful routines for your space: for example, coordinating devices or creating an automation that fits your daily schedule. Home Assistant founder Paulus Schoutsen told TechRadar that it “runs locally in your home and doesn’t require the internet to work.” That is his description of the platform; whether a particular device or integration works without internet depends on its own capabilities. - Before choosing sensors, plugs, or other devices, check Home Assistant’s current compatibility information for the exact model.
- Plan for setup and ongoing upkeep: adding an integration and building a reliable automation are part of the project, not automatic outcomes of installation.
2. Curate a personal media or music server
A media server can organize a personal collection and make it available on devices at home or remotely. Unraid lists Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby as media-server options, while Home Cloud describes Navidrome for personal music and Jellyfin for streaming from a user’s server. These are examples of software roles, not a comparative test or a recommendation of one as the winner. Use media you have the rights to store and play.

Home Cloud describes Jellyfin this way: “Jellyfin is the volunteer-built media solution that puts you in control of your media. 3. Run a personal photo and file cloud
For a digital-archive project, Home Cloud presents Immich as an app for storing photos and videos. Unraid describes Nextcloud as a way to store documents, calendars, contacts, and photos. The choice starts with what you want to organize: a photo-and-video library, a broader collection of files and personal information, or both.

Self-hosted storage is not automatically a backup. If the host fails or files are lost, a single copy on that host may not help you recover them. Keep a separate backup and test that you can restore from it. Home Cloud’s app overview and Unraid’s home-server app guide describe these software examples.

FreshRSS is listed in Deployrr’s application catalog as a self-hosted RSS feed aggregator. That makes it a natural project for building a reading dashboard from the publications and sites you choose, then maintaining your own feed list. The catalog establishes FreshRSS as an example; it does not compare it with hosted readers or establish that it is universally better or more private.

5. Host a game server for friends
A home server can also host a multiplayer space for a group of friends. In a TechRadar interview, Kris Moore of TrueNAS described home-lab uses that include “hosting game servers.” That supports the broad idea, not a claim about any particular game, player count, or hardware requirement. Check the chosen game’s server documentation and requirements before setting it up.

How to choose your first project
Pick the project that matches something you already want to do, then check its practical demands before buying hardware or moving important data. Useful questions include:
- What will it serve? Automation, media, photos and files, RSS feeds, and multiplayer games place different demands on a host.
- Where will you use it? Decide whether access only at home is enough or whether you need remote access; do not assume the same setup covers both.
- What will you maintain? Consider installation, updates, compatibility, storage growth, and how much administration you enjoy.
- How will you protect the data? For anything you cannot replace, arrange a separate backup and verify restoration before relying on the archive.
A compact mini PC is one possible home-server format, but the available information does not establish a model or minimum specification for these projects. Existing hardware may be a reasonable place to begin. Larger media or photo libraries may make storage expansion relevant; choose it based on the collection and workload rather than a generic parts list.
