Spotify settings aren’t universally bad defaults, but five controls can make listening feel less predictable: Autoplay, Smart Shuffle, Canvas and video, volume normalization, and automatic audio-quality adjustment. Turn off only the behavior you dislike—some settings solve real problems, such as preventing playback interruptions or saving data.
Which Spotify settings should you turn off?
Use this as a preference guide, not a ranking: Spotify’s help pages explain what these features do, but don’t establish that they annoy everyone. The first three change what plays or appears on screen; the last two affect sound and may involve trade-offs. Menu names and availability can vary by app version, device, account, and plan.

| Setting | What switching it off changes | Who may prefer it on |
|---|---|---|
| Autoplay | Playback stops when the selected album, playlist, or queue ends. | Listeners who want music to continue afterward. |
| Smart Shuffle | Stops the recommendations mixed into a listening session where the control is available. | Listeners who like Spotify’s session-matched suggestions. |
| Canvas and video | Reduces visual motion and video during playback. | Listeners who enjoy visuals or don’t find them distracting. |
| Volume normalization | Allows greater loudness variation between tracks. | Listeners who prefer a more even volume between songs. |
| Automatic audio-quality adjustment | Keeps audio quality from changing automatically to help avoid stuttering. | Listeners with limited data or unreliable connections. |
1. Turn off Autoplay to stop music after your playlist ends
If you want Spotify to stop when the album, playlist, or queue you chose is finished, Autoplay is the setting to change. Spotify says disabling it stops playback after the selected content ends; its Data Saver guidance also lists turning off Autoplay as one way to avoid continued playback and reduce data use. See Spotify Support’s Data Saver guidance.
How to find it
Open Settings and privacy and look under Playback for Autoplay. The exact path can differ by app version. If you can’t find the toggle, search within Settings for “Autoplay.”

Leave it on if you want Spotify to keep playing after your chosen content ends. Turn it off if you’d rather decide what plays next.
2. Turn off Smart Shuffle recommendations if you want only your chosen tracks
Smart Shuffle adds recommendations that Spotify says match the “vibe” of a listening session. If you want a playlist to contain only the tracks you selected, the recommendations may feel intrusive. Spotify says recommended content has an Enhance badge beside the artist in the Now Playing bar, which can help distinguish it.
Availability and control
Spotify’s documented control is for Premium mobile listeners: go to Settings and privacy > Playback and switch off Include Smart Shuffle in play modes. Spotify says Smart Shuffle is always active on mobile for free listeners, so this Premium setting should not be assumed to be available to everyone. Details are in Spotify Support’s Smart Shuffle guide.

Keep Smart Shuffle if you enjoy session-matched suggestions. If the setting isn’t shown on your account, your plan may not include this control.
3. Turn off Canvas and video to reduce playback visuals
Canvas uses short looping visuals while a song plays. Spotify also offers controls for broader video formats. Disabling these features makes sense if motion distracts you or you want a more minimal screen—not as a major data-saving measure. Spotify says Canvas uses very little data and doesn’t keep running in the background. Its Data Saver article says the feature reduces data use by showing fewer images and reducing audio quality, but that doesn’t mean Canvas alone is a substantial data drain.
Where to change the controls
On mobile and tablet, Spotify gives this path: Settings and privacy > Content and display > Videos and Canvas. The controls apply across platforms and devices where you use the account, according to Spotify Support’s video settings guidance.

There is an important exception for free, ad-supported listening: Canvas visuals may still appear with audio ads, and Spotify says video ads cannot be disabled. Keep the visuals on if you enjoy them; switch them off if you’d rather focus on the audio.

Volume normalization balances soft and loud tracks to create a more uniform listening experience. If you want more track-to-track loudness variation, try turning it off and compare a few familiar songs. That is a preference experiment, not an objective sound-quality upgrade.
Choose a level or switch normalization off
On mobile, the typical path is Settings and privacy > Playback. Spotify says its playback normalization targets -14 dB LUFS. Premium listeners can select Loud (-11 dB LUFS), Normal (-14 dB LUFS), or Quiet (-19 dB LUFS). Spotify describes Loud as useful in noisy environments, though it produces less dynamic levels; Quiet is intended for quieter environments. See Spotify Support’s volume normalization guidance and its technical explanation of loudness normalization.

To change audio settings, Spotify Connect must not be playing on another device. Keep normalization on if you value consistent levels—especially when playlists mix recordings with very different loudness.

Spotify enables automatic adjustment by default to help prevent playback from stuttering. Turning it off lets you choose a preferred quality, but higher streaming quality uses more data and higher download quality uses more storage. A fixed high setting can suit reliable Wi-Fi and an ample data allowance; automatic adjustment may be better on a limited plan or unstable connection.
Pick a quality that fits your device and plan
Spotify’s help page lists approximate options of 24 kbit/s for Low, 96 kbit/s for Normal, 160 kbit/s for High, and 320 kbit/s for Very High. It also lists lossless audio up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for Premium. Availability depends on plan and device, so these are not guaranteed options for every listener. The page describes the trade-off as turning quality up for finer detail or down to save data. Check Spotify Support’s audio quality guide for current settings and availability.

Look under Settings and privacy for Audio quality; labels and paths vary across platforms. If you turn automatic adjustment off, choose a quality you can sustain rather than maximizing it by default. On an inconsistent connection, buffering may become more likely.
Change one setting at a time
For playback that continues too long, start with Autoplay. For recommendations mixed into a session, check Smart Shuffle and your plan’s controls. For visual distraction, adjust Canvas and video. Treat normalization and audio quality as listening experiments: compare the result in your usual environment, and restore the original setting if the change doesn’t help.
