Start with five routines that connect a familiar event—such as motion, a door unlocking or a scheduled time—to a useful action. Treat them as adaptable templates: the trigger and available controls depend on your controller, devices, software version and region. Build one routine at a time, observe what it does, then add conditions to prevent false triggers or unwanted actions.
How to choose and build a routine
A smart home automation links a trigger to an action: for example, motion after sunset can turn on a porch light. Google publishes that as an example, while Apple gives an evening example in which lights turn on when the front door is unlocked. These illustrate the pattern; they do not promise that every controller or device supports those exact events.

Before building a routine, check that your existing platform exposes the event you want and can control the device you want to act on. Matter is designed to make setup and cross-platform use easier: Google says Matter devices communicate over the home’s existing network, and Apple describes Matter as enabling accessories to work across platforms. Still, confirm support for the exact device, controller and feature you plan to use. Device-category support does not mean every model offers the same triggers or controls in every app.
- Check compatibility with the devices and platform already in your home.
- Find out whether the action runs locally or depends on a cloud service.
- Confirm whether you need a hub, bridge or Thread border router.
- Verify that the desired event and action are exposed in your platform’s automation tools.
- Keep a simple way to override the automation, such as a physical switch or manual control in the app.
For a platform-specific example, Home Assistant says it runs on home hardware with data stored locally, and that local protocols such as Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread do not need an internet connection. Its optional cloud services support functions users choose to enable. Those details describe Home Assistant, not all smart home platforms. [Home Assistant’s privacy and local-operation overview]

1. Turn on entry lights after dark
Use a motion or door event, limited to evening or after sunset, to turn on an entry or porch light. Then turn it off after an interval that suits the space, or when the area is no longer occupied if your platform supports that condition. Google’s example pairs motion after sunset with turning on a porch light; Apple documents an evening example triggered by unlocking the front door.
Start with the simplest supported trigger and action. If the light switches on too often, add a time condition or adjust the sensor’s placement and sensitivity where those settings are available. Check that the light can be switched off manually without the routine immediately turning it back on.
2. Light a room when someone enters
A motion or occupancy sensor can switch on a room light when it detects someone, then switch the light off after a delay. Google documents motion as an automation trigger, and Amazon lists motion detectors as a supported Matter device category. The exact events and controls depend on the sensor, controller and app.

Choose the timeout for how the room is used: a short delay may work in a passageway, while a room where people sit still may need a longer delay or another occupancy signal. Keep a manual control path, and test whether ordinary activity keeps the light on as expected before relying on the routine.
3. Shut down selected devices at bedtime
Create a scheduled routine or start it manually to turn off selected lights and compatible plugs, or put a supported device into night mode. Keep the action list short and review each item before saving it. Avoid including equipment that should stay powered overnight, such as a device you rely on for safety, connectivity or scheduled operation.
Smart plugs are a device category supported in Matter documentation, but a plug’s availability does not make every connected appliance suitable for unattended switching. Check the appliance and plug requirements, and only include a load that is appropriate to control this way. Apple documents grouped actions and automations; what you can combine will vary by platform and accessory.

4. Set a morning comfort scene
Use a time or user-triggered routine to set a light scene and adjust a supported thermostat or other comfort device. Google’s Matter support guidance and Amazon’s device-category documentation include thermostats, while Apple describes automations and grouped actions. Whether a particular thermostat exposes the setting you want depends on its compatibility with your controller.
Choose a temperature and schedule for your own household rather than copying a generic preset. Climate, preferences, heating or cooling equipment and energy tariffs all affect what is appropriate. If the routine changes more than one device, check the resulting scene in the morning and retain a way to adjust it manually.

Set a water leak detector to send a phone or platform notification if your chosen controller supports that sensor’s events. Amazon lists water leak detectors as a Matter device category. Confirm that the exact sensor and controller expose a leak event to the automation system and that notifications are enabled for the device or app.

A compatible shutoff valve could be an additional action, but only if you have confirmed the exact valve, controller and plumbing setup work together. A detector or notification routine is not a guarantee against water damage, and a sensor’s category listing does not establish that it can operate a valve.
Make each automation dependable
After creating a routine, watch it operate under ordinary conditions before adding more actions. Add a condition only when it addresses a real problem, such as lights turning on during daylight or a room going dark while someone is still there. Keep each routine understandable enough that everyone in the household can tell what it controls and how to override it.

For secure devices, be especially cautious about adding unlock actions. Home Assistant’s Google Assistant integration documentation describes a PIN requirement for opening secure devices exposed through that integration. Protections differ by platform; check the applicable settings and household safety implications before automating a lock.
For platform details, see Google’s Matter setup guidance, Apple’s Matter support page, Amazon’s supported Matter device categories, Google Home’s automation examples and Home Assistant’s Google Assistant integration documentation.
