A single “game image” preset that produces a file for every storefront slot will eventually produce artwork that is the wrong size, carries the wrong text, or breaks a platform rule. The five rules below show how to build presets that can be reused safely, and how to decide when reuse is allowed at all.
No platform publishes a universal preset schema or versioning standard. The rules are an engineering synthesis from current official guidance from Steam, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple, so check each live page before you ship dimensions or policy details.

Rule 1: Name the destination and asset role in every preset
Each storefront treats “the cover image” as several different jobs. A store capsule, a library hero, a logo, a poster, a screenshot, and an app-store search creative each have their own content rules. A preset that does not name its target cannot tell you whether its output is legal, let alone useful, in the slot where it lands.

For example, steam.library_hero or microsoft.box_art is far more useful than game_image_v2. The identifier should answer three questions: where the file goes, what job it performs, and which rule set governs it.

Steam
Steam separates base store capsules from library assets. The library capsule, library hero, and library logo are distinct assets with distinct content. Steam’s rules are published in the Steamworks Graphical Asset Rules, which should be your reference for any Steam preset.
Microsoft Store and Xbox
Microsoft distinguishes poster art, box art, hero art, and screenshots, and the requirements depend on the device family. The Microsoft guidance states: “If your title runs on multiple devices, make sure the requirements for each device family type are met.” A preset for a multi-device title therefore needs one target per device family, not one shared file. Meta Horizon
Meta’s asset guidance covers distinct asset types across its store surfaces. Assign each preset to one of those types, not to “Quest store art” in general. The Meta Horizon OS asset design guidelines were updated May 11, 2026.
Apple App Store
Apple’s guidance separates store artwork, previews, and search-related creative, and it stresses focused composition and consistency across a set. Map each Apple preset to the specific surface it feeds, using Apple’s App Store asset best practices as the reference.
Rule 2: Encode geometry and composition constraints as data
Dimensions, format, and crop behavior should be fields in the preset, not instructions in a designer’s head. Platforms define role-specific sizes, and content that ignores the display surface can be clipped or obscured.

Microsoft’s published examples show how far sizes can diverge between roles. The minimum and preferred values below are the ones cited in the Microsoft Learn guidance for PNG output:

The same dimensions can carry different content rules, so never compare outputs by size alone. For Steam, the capsule dimensions and accuracy requirements are set in the Steamworks rules, and the figures are not restated here; use the live page. For Meta and Apple, the guidance centers on safe areas and legibility rather than a single pixel grid in the sources reviewed.
A geometry block in each preset should include:
- Output width and height, and the preferred size if the platform lists one
- File format and color profile requirements from the target page
- Crop or fit mode, such as fill, letterbox, or pad, with the rule for each
- A focal point, expressed as x and y coordinates within the source
- A safe-area rectangle where titles and key art must remain visible
- Export tool template, if you use one. Apple links templates for Photoshop, Figma, Pixelmator, and Sketch
Meta advises keeping titles and focal points inside safe areas across surfaces. Treat that as a required field: a preset without a safe-area definition cannot be validated.
Rule 3: Treat text, localization, and policy as target-specific
Text is the most common reason an image that looks correct is still rejected or misleading. Each platform has its own limits, and the preset must make the title treatment and permitted copy explicit.
Steam text limits
Steam’s base capsule rule is strict: “Content on base graphical asset capsules on Steam is limited to game artwork, the game name, and any official subtitle.” Promotional text is handled through Artwork Overrides, which carry their own constraints, including a one-month limit and a localization requirement. Library assets differ again. The library capsule must include the game logo, the library hero is artwork only, and the library logo is the logotype with an optional logomark. Steam also requires that a capsule show a readable product name and that artwork be PG-13 appropriate. These rules took effect September 1, 2022 according to Steamworks, so confirm the current version before relying on them.

Apple text and claims
Apple calls for localization of text that appears in images and for copy that is legible and accurate. It also prohibits misleading or inappropriate claims, so a preset that generates promotional wording needs a claim-review step for each market.

Meta branded assets
Meta requires the exact app title on branded assets, with an icon exception. A preset that changes capitalization, adds a subtitle, or shortens the title for space is non-compliant for those assets.
Build the text policy into the preset as fields: title_treatment (exact, logo, or none), allowed_copy (name, official subtitle, or approved promotional string), locales (one entry per language that needs embedded text), and age_rating_check (required for Steam PG-13 review and for any platform with its own rating rules).
Rule 4: Reuse source artwork only across compatible destinations
Reuse is a compatibility decision, not a file-copy shortcut. A file that works as a library hero may not be valid as a box art asset, even at a matching size, because the content rules differ.
Meta describes an asset library that can reuse previously uploaded images across different asset types, with automatic filtering based on compatibility. Apple’s asset library shows where approved assets can be used. Both systems encode the compatibility check. Your pipeline should do the same, and it should not depend on a human remembering which slot accepts what.

Keep three things separate:
- The original artwork, stored once and never overwritten
- The source metadata, including creator, rights, edition, and any text it contains
- Generated derivatives, which are outputs of a preset and can be regenerated
If a derivative is copied into a slot without a compatibility check, the slot’s rules are effectively unchecked. Make the compatibility decision a recorded field, with the destination identifier and the rule version that approved it.
Rule 5: Version presets and validate every output against current rules
Versioning and provenance are engineering recommendations, not platform requirements. They matter because platform rules change and because teams need to reproduce an output after a source file or a rule has changed. Store a stable preset version, the identity of the source asset, the parameters used, and the date the destination rules were last checked. A derivative without that record cannot be refreshed reliably.
A provenance record for each output should include:
- Preset identifier and version
- Source asset identifier and a content hash of the original file
- Parameter values for size, format, fit mode, focal point, and safe area
- Destination identifier, and the platform rule page used for validation
- Validation result and the date it was run
Validation should run against the current destination rules for every output, not only when a preset is created. The checks that follow from the rules above are:

- Age suitability meets the destination’s rating rules
- Safe area holds for titles and key art
- Each required locale has its own validated variant
Re-run validation whenever a platform updates its guidance. Meta’s guidance, for example, was updated May 11, 2026, and Steam’s rules are tied to a specific effective date. A preset that passed last year may fail today.
