If your Samsung laptop has stopped responding, the first decision is whether Windows is still running. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If the security screen appears, Windows is alive and you are dealing with a software freeze, which you can usually work through without a reset. If nothing appears and the display stays dark while the power light is on, you are dealing with a display or startup problem, and the steps are different. The sections below separate the two, then move from the least disruptive fix to the most disruptive one.
Step 1: Work out which kind of freeze you have
Windows responds to Ctrl+Alt+Delete
Windows is running, and the problem is most likely a program, process, or resource shortage. Go to the Task Manager section below. Your files are not at immediate risk in this state, so you have time to save open work if the system allows it.

The screen is blank but the power is on
Windows may still be running behind a dark display. Microsoft’s guide to blank screens in Windows 10 and 11 starts with the physical checks: confirm that the power and any external display connections are secure, then try the display shortcuts. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver; the screen typically flickers briefly when this works. If the image is missing on an external monitor, press Windows+P and cycle through the display modes, since the laptop may be sending output to a display that is not connected. If a mouse cursor is visible, Task Manager can restart Windows Explorer, the shell that draws the desktop and taskbar. If Explorer is not running at all, Microsoft describes running explorer.exe as a new task from Task Manager. Source: Microsoft Support, Troubleshooting blank screens in Windows.

If the keyboard, mouse, and Ctrl+Alt+Delete all do nothing, skip ahead to the Safe Mode and reset sections. Holding the power button to force a shutdown is the last resort at this point; you should expect possible loss of unsaved work.

Step 2: Use Task Manager to find the load
When Windows responds, Samsung’s PC support guide for slow or frozen systems recommends checking for a process that is using unusually high CPU or memory. Open it this way:
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager.
- Select the Processes tab and click the CPU and Memory column headers to sort by use.
- If a clearly unnecessary app sits at the top, select it and choose End task.
- Do not end an unfamiliar system process unless you know what it does. Ending a core Windows service can cause a worse crash.
If the laptop freezes shortly after it starts, check the Startup apps tab in Task Manager as well. Samsung’s Korea support page on laptops that will not shut down points to the same tab when a startup app interferes with normal shutdown. Step 3: Check storage, updates, and drivers, then restart
Once you have regained control, Samsung’s guidance points to four checks, in this order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Free storage: a nearly full system drive slows Windows and can make it appear frozen. Remove files you do not need, or move large media to external storage.
- Windows updates: install pending updates through Settings, then restart.
- Samsung drivers and support software: update these from Samsung’s support pages for your exact model.
- App updates: update the application you were using when the freeze began.
Restart normally after these changes and use the laptop for a typical session. If the freeze returns, the cause is still active, and you should move to the next step. Source: Samsung Support (US), Samsung PC runs slowly or freezes.

Step 4: Use Safe Mode to narrow the cause
How to reach Safe Mode
Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a repair. To reach it on Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Restart now next to Advanced startup, if you can reach Settings. If the laptop cannot start Windows normally, Samsung says a boot failure may need several failed startups before the Windows Recovery Environment appears. From there, choose the troubleshooting path to Startup Settings and select the Safe Mode option. The menu wording differs slightly between Windows versions, so follow the labels on your screen. Sources: Samsung Support (US), Recover, restore, or reset your Samsung PC and Samsung Support (US), Samsung PC turns on, but doesn’t start or boot into Windows.
What the result tells you
Samsung’s recovery guide describes Safe Mode as starting Windows in a very basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. The result is useful in one direction:

- The freeze does not happen in Safe Mode: default settings and basic drivers are less likely to be the cause. Look at apps, drivers, or settings you changed recently, such as a newly installed program, a graphics driver update, or a modified power setting.
- The freeze still happens in Safe Mode: the cause is more likely to be in a core component, which makes a model-specific reset or a service visit more reasonable.
Safe Mode does not name the faulty component. It only narrows the list of suspects.

Step 5: Try the model-specific reset, if the problem is hardware-related
Samsung publishes different soft RTC (real-time clock) reset instructions for each Galaxy Book generation, and the procedure depends on the processor variant. Do not use a key combination from a forum or a different model’s page. Identify your model first (the model name is on the product label and in Settings > System > About), then follow the instructions Samsung lists for your group:

Some of these procedures warn that the first startup afterward can take approximately one to three minutes. Do not interrupt the boot during that time, even if the screen looks unchanged. Source: Samsung Electronics Service Korea, Samsung laptop screen does not appear. This guidance is Samsung’s Korea page for those model generations; check that your country’s Samsung support site gives the same steps before following them.
Step 6: Factory reset as a last software step
A factory reset removes installed software and can remove personal data, so treat it as the step after backups, not before them. Back up documents, photos, and browser data to external storage or cloud storage first. Then check whether Samsung Recovery is available on your model: Samsung states that it is not present on all Galaxy Book models and may not be preinstalled. If you have no recovery partition, use the Windows reset option or the recovery media your laptop provides.
If the laptop still freezes after a factory reset, Samsung recommends requesting service. At that point, a software cause is unlikely, and the repair channel is the right next step. Sources: Samsung Support (US), Recover, restore, or reset your Samsung PC and Samsung Support (US), Samsung PC runs slowly or freezes.
Quick reference: which step fits your symptom
| Symptom | First action | Next action if unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Ctrl+Alt+Delete works, Windows is slow or hangs | Task Manager: end an unnecessary high-CPU or high-memory process | Free storage, install updates, restart, then Safe Mode |
| Screen is blank, power light on, cursor visible | Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B, then Windows+P | Restart Explorer from Task Manager, then Safe Mode |
| Freezes only in normal startup | Safe Mode | Model-specific RTC reset for your Galaxy Book group |
| Freezes after factory reset | Confirm backups are complete | Request Samsung service |
Each row points to a step above, and the order matters: the less disruptive action always comes first.
