If you want to check PC temperatures, clocks, fan speeds, or component details, the right software depends on what you need to see. HWiNFO offers the broadest documented system visibility in this shortlist; HWMonitor presents common health sensors; MSI Afterburner adds GPU controls and an in-game overlay; OpenHardwareMonitor provides a Windows sensor tree and logging; and CPU-Z is best for identifying hardware rather than monitoring every sensor. These are feature-based picks, not a lab-tested ranking.
How to choose a PC hardware monitor
In this article, “hardware monitor” means software that reads information from a PC’s components—not a physical display. Before downloading a utility, decide whether you need a quick temperature check, broad sensor coverage, a gaming overlay, or help identifying what is installed.

- Coverage: Check whether the tool reports only CPU and GPU data or also motherboard, memory, storage, fans, and other devices. Actual readings depend on hardware and sensor access.
- Purpose: Sensor monitoring, component identification, and GPU tuning are different jobs. A utility suited to one may not replace another.
- Presentation: Consider whether you want a sensor table, graphs, logging, tray readings, alerts, or an in-game overlay.
- Access: Confirm support for your Windows version and system architecture. Some readings may require administrator privileges.
Sensor utilities report what they can access; one reading or application cannot by itself diagnose every hardware problem.
1. HWiNFO: best for broad system visibility
HWiNFO is the strongest fit when you want more than a CPU or GPU temperature. Its official feature overview describes real-time monitoring across CPUs, GPUs, mainboards, drives, and peripherals, alongside detailed hardware information. It also lists tables, graphs, tray icons, an on-screen display, configurable alerts, and XML, CSV, and HTML reports. The vendor lists x86, x64, and ARM64 support and Windows versions through Windows 11. HWiNFO’s official overview describes those capabilities; they are not independent accuracy test results.

2. HWMonitor: best for straightforward sensor readings
HWMonitor focuses on PC health sensors, including temperatures, voltages, power, current, fan speeds, utilization, and clock speeds, according to CPUID’s HWMonitor page. That makes it a practical option when your main question is what the system’s sensors are reporting, rather than how to tune a GPU or identify every component.

The CPUID page inspected for this article lists HWMonitor 1.59, dated August 26, 2025. That is the date attached to that version entry, not confirmation that it is the newest release now. TechRadar’s 2025 guide characterizes HWMonitor as simple and lightweight and notes that it lacks advanced benchmarking; this is editorial context, not a universal performance measurement. TechRadar’s guide provides that comparison.

MSI Afterburner combines real-time monitoring with an in-game on-screen display, GPU clock and voltage controls, and custom fan profiles. MSI says it works with graphics cards from all brands and is free to use. That makes it the most directly relevant pick here if you want to watch GPU behavior while gaming or adjust available GPU settings. See MSI’s official Afterburner page for its feature description.

Monitoring and changing settings are not the same thing: using tuning controls can alter GPU behavior, and the product description does not establish that overclocking is risk-free. MSI warns that fake download sites have been reported and advises users to download from MSI or Guru3D’s official sources.
4. OpenHardwareMonitor: best for an open-source Windows sensor tree
OpenHardwareMonitor’s project repository describes a Windows sensor hierarchy covering motherboards, Intel and AMD CPUs, RAM, NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs, storage, network adapters, cooling devices, some USB-connected power supplies, and laptop batteries. It supports current, minimum, and maximum sensor values, configurable polling, text reports, and CSV logging, with x86 and x64 Windows builds. The project details are in the OpenHardwareMonitor repository.

Some readings require administrator privileges to access hardware registers. The project also says antivirus software may flag the application because it uses a driver and scheduled task; that explanation is the project’s own, not a guarantee about how every security product will classify it.

CPU-Z is a useful companion when you first need to find out what hardware is installed, but it is not a full replacement for a sensor-focused monitor. CPUID says it reports processor name and number, motherboard and chipset, memory type, size, timings and module specifications, plus real-time core and memory frequency measurements. Its product page lists Windows x86/x64, Windows ARM64, and Android. See CPUID’s CPU-Z page.

Which tool should you pick?
| Tool | Best fit | Notable documented features |
|---|---|---|
| HWiNFO | Broad system visibility | Multiple component categories, graphs, reports, alerts, tray icons, and OSD |
| HWMonitor | Common health-sensor readings | Temperatures, voltages, power, current, fans, utilization, and clocks |
| MSI Afterburner | GPU monitoring and tuning | Real-time monitoring, in-game OSD, clock and voltage controls, and fan profiles |
| OpenHardwareMonitor | Windows sensor hierarchy and logging | Current/minimum/maximum values, polling options, text reports, and CSV logging |
| CPU-Z | Component identification | Processor, motherboard, memory details, and core and memory frequencies |
The table summarizes vendor- or project-described capabilities, not comparative testing. A sensible pairing is to use CPU-Z to identify components and a sensor-focused tool to watch temperatures or fan readings. If you want broad monitoring in one place, start with HWiNFO; if GPU behavior during a game is the priority, consider Afterburner.
