These five Windows tools cover everyday jobs from organizing windows and installing software to editing code, working in a terminal, and annotating presentations. Microsoft maintains the projects behind PowerToys, WinGet, and Windows Terminal. Visual Studio Code needs a licensing qualification: its Code – OSS repository is MIT-licensed, but Microsoft’s branded VS Code distribution includes additional customizations under Microsoft’s product license. ZoomIt is a Microsoft Sysinternals utility, but its standalone distribution and the PowerToys module should not be assumed to have identical terms.
What “open source” means for these Windows apps
A public repository lets people inspect a project’s code, but it does not automatically establish that every branded download uses the same license as that code. The distinction is especially important for Visual Studio Code. The Microsoft distribution is not simply the MIT-licensed repository packaged unchanged.

Nor does open source by itself guarantee that software is safe or privacy-preserving. Check the source and license for the specific distribution you install, use reputable download channels, and review the app’s own data practices.
Microsoft PowerToys: a toolbox for Windows
Microsoft describes PowerToys as “a collection of utilities that help you customize Windows and streamline everyday tasks.” Its repository lists over 30 utilities, including FancyZones for arranging windows, PowerRename for batch renaming, PowerToys Run, Text Extractor, and ZoomIt. PowerToys can be installed from GitHub releases, the Microsoft Store, or WinGet. The repository also says the app logs basic diagnostic data (telemetry), so its open-source status should not be read as a promise that it collects no data.
WinGet: install and manage software from the command line
WinGet is Microsoft’s Windows Package Manager client, available as part of Microsoft’s App Installer package. Its two default sources are “msstore,” the Microsoft Store, and “winget,” a community repository. Those sources make software easier to find and install; they do not mean every package has been vetted by Microsoft or that installation is risk-free. WinGet project repository

Microsoft’s Windows Terminal repository contains source for Windows Terminal, Terminal Preview, the Windows console host, and shared components. The published requirement is Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later. The repository recommends installing through the Microsoft Store for automatic updates.
Visual Studio Code: open-source base, separately licensed Microsoft build
Microsoft and the community develop Code – OSS in a public repository under the MIT license. Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code distribution adds Microsoft-specific customizations and is released under a traditional Microsoft product license. VS Code is an editor with code navigation and understanding, debugging, extensions, and integrations with development tools. Its repository says it is updated monthly; check the current release and license terms for the distribution you intend to use.

ZoomIt is a Microsoft Sysinternals tool for screen zooming, annotation, capture, and recording. Its documented features include a break timer, drawing modes, screenshot and region capture, OCR to the clipboard, and recording to MP4 or GIF. ZoomIt is also listed among PowerToys utilities, with a module directory in the PowerToys repository. Do not assume the standalone Sysinternals build and the PowerToys module have identical features or licensing terms; check the terms for the version you choose.

These projects offer useful Windows tools, but “Microsoft-made” and “open source” are not blanket descriptions of every app’s history, package, or license. For a particular download, verify its project page, distribution terms, supported Windows version, and update channel.
