An old Kindle can do more than store books: it can become a shared-calendar display, a photo frame, a browser-based Spotify remote, a static reference screen, or a dedicated flashcard device. These projects differ in setup effort and model support, so identify your Kindle before following third-party instructions.
Check your Kindle model before choosing a project
On the Kindle, open All Settings → Device Options → Device Info to identify the device. Amazon notes that not every generation has been available in every marketplace, so instructions written for a particular model may not apply to yours. Amazon’s model-identification guidance explains where to find the information.

Use the model name and generation to check each project’s own requirements before changing software or mounting the device. Amazon says it provides software updates for at least four years from purchase when Amazon was the seller, or until a later device-specific date listed on its support page. That update period is not a promise of how long a Kindle will last, and it does not by itself establish that every older device is unsafe or unsupported. Amazon’s Kindle software-update information gives the current support qualification.

Difficulty ratings and project descriptions come from The Old Kindle project catalogue. They are not compatibility guarantees; check the linked project instructions for your model. The catalogue explicitly says the Spotify-browser project does not need a jailbreak, but does not state jailbreak requirements for every other idea.

1. Turn it into a shared-calendar wall display
A Kindle mounted where household members can see it can show a shared calendar’s daily schedule. The project catalogue rates this idea easy and describes a screen that does not time out, making it a fit for an always-visible agenda rather than a conventional tablet-style dashboard. Read the complete project instructions and confirm your exact model works before mounting the device.
A wall mount is optional hardware, not part of the software requirement. Check the mount’s dimensions against the Kindle itself and any case before buying or installing it; the catalogue does not verify fit for particular devices or accessories.

- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
2. Make a rotating photo frame
The catalogue describes displaying personal photos sourced from a NAS or cloud album and rates the setup medium. It also says this may work with a cracked touchscreen, but that is not a guarantee for every damaged Kindle: the display, remaining touch function, model, and project setup all matter. Check the project’s requirements and make sure the device can still perform the actions its setup requires before relying on it as a frame.

This project uses the Kindle’s experimental browser as a tap-to-skip controller. The catalogue says no jailbreak is needed for this idea. It is a browser-based project to try, not a guaranteed current Spotify integration: browser capabilities and service behavior can change, and the catalogue does not establish that it works on every Kindle model or with every account or playback setup.

4. Keep code or documentation on a static reference screen
A Kindle can serve as a glare-free secondary screen for documentation or static code, according to the catalogue, which rates this idea medium. Think of it as a page you consult, not a conventional computer monitor: the project description supports static reference use and does not establish fast refresh or ordinary live-screen behavior. That distinction makes it more suitable for a guide or snippet you keep nearby than for work that needs frequent updates.
5. Dedicate it to flashcards with KAnki
The catalogue names KAnki as software for turning a Kindle into a spaced-repetition study device and rates the project medium. Before installing anything, check KAnki’s project instructions for support for your precise Kindle model; the catalogue does not establish universal compatibility. If your model is supported, keeping the Kindle dedicated to flashcards can make it a focused study device rather than a general-purpose e-reader.

When an interactive display becomes a bigger project
These five ideas should not be confused with a full interactive dashboard. Kindle Carousel’s documented setup requires a Kindle 3 keyboard or Kindle 4 NT, jailbreak and SSH access, a server (for example, a Raspberry Pi or VPS), stable Wi-Fi, and a nearby power socket. Its architecture has another machine generate grayscale PNG screenshots because the Kindle cannot display modern websites directly.

Set expectations before repurposing
- Project listings are examples, not universal capabilities; model support and setup steps vary.
- Some older-Kindle projects in the catalogue—including weather stations, literary clocks, smart-home displays, recipe screens, and art galleries—have their own requirements and may involve jailbreaking. Their appearance in a project index is not proof that they will work on a particular device.
- For any project involving software changes, verify the model-specific instructions and understand the required access before proceeding.
The Old Kindle catalogue is a useful starting point for project ideas, but use each project’s own instructions to assess compatibility and setup.
