Kubernetes entered 2023 as mainstream production infrastructure rather than an experimental platform. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Annual Survey 2023 found that 66% of potential or actual cloud-service consumers were using Kubernetes in production and another 18% were evaluating it. That 84% combined figure, alongside container use above 90% when pilots and evaluations are included, explains why platform teams focused less on whether to adopt Kubernetes and more on how to secure, observe, govern and afford it.
1. Kubernetes became a mainstream production platform
The CNCF Annual Survey 2023 described Kubernetes as having “solidifies its core technology status.” Its figures show 66% of potential or actual cloud-service consumers using Kubernetes in production, while 18% were actively evaluating it. Only 15% reported no plans to use Kubernetes.

Operationally, this shift changed Kubernetes from a specialist project into a default option in infrastructure planning. Teams increasingly had to design for production reliability, upgrade procedures, disaster recovery, access control and staff capability rather than prove that containers could run.
What platform teams needed to standardize
- Cluster lifecycle management, including supported versions, upgrades and rollback plans.
- Workload policies for namespaces, quotas, requests, limits and admission controls.
- Deployment patterns that make releases repeatable across development, staging and production.
- Ownership boundaries between application teams, platform engineers and cloud providers.
- Recovery objectives, backup coverage and documented failure procedures.
2. Containers became the normal delivery layer
Kubernetes benefited from a broader container-adoption wave. The CNCF Annual Survey 2023 says container use, including organizations piloting or actively evaluating containers, was greater than 90%. Kubernetes therefore grew as the orchestration layer for an established delivery model, not as an isolated tool.

How this affected software delivery
- Build pipelines increasingly produced versioned container images as the deployable unit.
- Application teams had to define image provenance, base-image maintenance and vulnerability remediation.
- Operations teams managed scheduling, networking, storage and updates across many short-lived workloads.
- Organizations needed consistent development-to-production configuration to avoid environment drift.
Container adoption did not automatically make every workload a good Kubernetes candidate. Stateful systems, latency-sensitive services and small teams still required a fit assessment based on operational skills, recovery needs and platform complexity.
3. Security moved to the center of platform decisions
Security was the leading challenge reported by 40% of organizations that potentially or generally consumed cloud services in the CNCF Annual Survey 2023. The figure measures the prevalence of the challenge; it does not rank particular Kubernetes products or prove that one control solves it.

The security areas teams had to compare
- Image and supply-chain security: trusted registries, dependency scanning, signing, provenance and controls that block unacceptable images before deployment.
- Identity and access: least-privilege Kubernetes RBAC, short-lived credentials, workload identity and separation of administrator duties.
- Policy enforcement: admission policies governing privileged containers, host access, registries, namespaces and required metadata.
- Runtime protection: detection and response for suspicious process, network and filesystem behavior after deployment.
- Secrets and data: controlled secret storage, encryption, rotation and clear handling of sensitive data in logs and backups.
Security became a platform design axis alongside reliability and developer experience. A useful evaluation asks where each control runs, who operates it, how it integrates with existing identity and incident-response systems, and what happens when a policy blocks a release.

4. Observability had to scale with cluster complexity
As clusters accumulated large numbers of containers, monitoring and observability became harder because operators needed timely metrics, events and logs across rapidly changing infrastructure. The CNCF Annual Survey 2023 noted wider adoption of Prometheus and OpenTelemetry during 2023.

Observability comparison criteria
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Signal coverage | Does the platform collect infrastructure and application metrics, logs, traces, Kubernetes events and profiling data where needed? |
| Cardinality | Can it handle labels and dimensions from many workloads without making queries or storage unmanageable? |
| Retention | How long must each signal remain available, and where is long-term data stored? |
| Alert quality | Can teams create actionable alerts with ownership, severity, deduplication and routing? |
| Integration effort | How much instrumentation, collector configuration and dashboard maintenance is required? |
| Operating cost | What are the costs of ingestion, storage, querying and the staff time needed to run the system? |
Prometheus and OpenTelemetry address important parts of this stack, but neither removes the need to define service-level indicators, control label growth, set retention policies and assign alert ownership. More telemetry is useful only when teams can connect it to diagnosis and action.
5. FinOps became a Kubernetes operating concern
Kubernetes can improve utilization and deployment scale, but it can also make consumption harder to see. In the CNCF Cloud Native and Kubernetes FinOps microsurvey, 49% of respondents said Kubernetes had increased cloud spend slightly or significantly. This is a reported direction from respondents, not a universal causal estimate for every cluster.

Where cost pressure commonly appears
- Resource requests: oversized CPU and memory requests reserve capacity that workloads may not use.
- Autoscaling: poorly tuned horizontal, vertical or cluster autoscaling can add capacity without improving service outcomes.
- Idle capacity: development environments, abandoned namespaces and overprovisioned node pools continue to incur charges.
- Shared infrastructure: multi-tenant clusters can obscure which teams, services or environments drive spending.
- Multi-cluster visibility: separate regions, accounts or managed services make consistent allocation and reporting more difficult.
Controls that connect Kubernetes to FinOps
- Set requests and limits from measured workload behavior, then review them as applications change.
- Use autoscaling with explicit service objectives and monitor whether added capacity produces the intended result.
- Apply labels, namespaces and ownership metadata so costs can be allocated to teams and environments.
- Schedule or remove non-production capacity when it is not needed.
- Review node-pool shape, capacity type and cluster count together rather than optimizing one bill line in isolation.
- Give engineering teams near-real-time cost and utilization feedback instead of waiting for monthly invoices.

What these trends meant for practitioners
Kubernetes in 2023 was no longer mainly an adoption decision. Container delivery was already widespread, so the hard questions concerned production discipline: securing the software supply chain, making telemetry actionable, controlling resource consumption and assigning clear operational ownership. Teams that treated those concerns as part of the platform—not as optional add-ons—were better positioned to gain value from Kubernetes without allowing complexity or cost to grow unchecked.
