They can help with light, information, charging, and basic care during an outage or evacuation—but they are only part of a complete household kit.
1. Flashlight and spare batteries
A flashlight provides portable light when the power is out or you need to move safely in the dark. The American Red Cross and NOAA both include flashlights in emergency-supply guidance. Choose a light whose power source you can maintain, and keep compatible spare batteries with it. The organizations do not specify a required brightness, runtime, or durability rating.

2. Battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA weather radio
A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can help you receive emergency information if usual communication channels are disrupted. The Red Cross recommends a battery-powered or hand-crank radio and says a NOAA Weather Radio is preferable if possible; NOAA also recommends a battery-powered radio. Coverage and reception can vary by location.
When choosing one, check its power options and whether it can receive NOAA weather alerts. These are practical features to verify, not a guarantee of reception or a ranking of particular models.

The bag features multiple compartments and molle compatible straps and D-rings, allowing you to attach extra pouches or survival tools. The crossbody strap is also detachable, making it easy to connect to a tactical survival backpack using carabiners or the molle system.
3. Portable power bank or USB charger
A charged power bank can provide backup power for a phone or other USB device. The Red Cross includes a portable power bank and charger in its hurricane supply list; NOAA notes that a portable crank- or solar-powered USB charger may be needed for cell phones.
Match the charger and cable to the devices in your household, and maintain the power source so it is ready to use. The cited guidance does not set a minimum capacity, and a charged phone does not ensure that mobile service will remain available.

How to make these gadgets useful in a real emergency
Keep supplies together in an easy-to-carry kit that can be used at home or taken during an evacuation, as the Red Cross advises. Check the items periodically: confirm the flashlight has compatible spare batteries, the radio’s power source is ready, and the power bank and cables work with your devices. Adapt the kit to household needs, including children, pets, and medical devices.
Gadgets do not replace essentials such as water, food, medicines, sanitation supplies, and copies of personal documents. The Red Cross recommends one gallon of water per person per day, with a three-day supply for evacuation and a two-week supply at home; its food guidance uses the same time frames. Its minimum list also includes a seven-day medication supply and personal records. NOAA advises at least three days of non-perishable food, water, and medicine for each household member, and says a longer-than-three-day water supply is desirable when possible because power and water could be out for at least that long.
