5 Gadgets That Found a Second Life After Support Ended

When company support ended, developers and volunteers helped preserve or repurpose five gadgets. Their revivals differed, and not all are confirmed to work today.

When a manufacturer shuts down a service, a gadget can lose cloud features even while its hardware still works. In a few cases, volunteers and developers kept devices useful by rebuilding services, patching network connections, or enabling a new use. The results were better for some owners—not universal upgrades—and historical revival reports do not establish that every service or tool still works today.

What “better after support” means

These five stories are not all the same kind of upgrade. The Stadia Controller gained a distinct use as a generic Bluetooth gamepad. Pebble, Chumby, Nabaztag, and Sony Dash are principally examples of communities preserving or restoring functions that depended on company-run services. A device may remain physically sound after support ends, but cloud-dependent features can stop working when servers close.

Gadget What ended What changed afterward Who helped What is established about current operation
Pebble smartwatch The company ceased operations in 2016; later, Fitbit planned to shut down services used by Pebble features. Replacement community services and an open-source release of most Pebble OS code helped preserve the ecosystem. Former employees and developers formed Rebble; Google released source code in 2025. Current service status is not established by the cited reports.
Google Stadia Controller Google’s Stadia cloud gaming service shut down. Google announced a self-serve firmware tool to enable Bluetooth connections, allowing use as a general game controller. Google provided the announced tool. The 2023 report establishes the announcement, not whether the tool remains available today.
Chumby The company ceased operations in 2012. Volunteers continued backend support for a period and pursued revival efforts to preserve the smart alarm clock’s functions. Volunteers. The retrospective report does not establish present server status.
Nabaztag Support ended in 2011. Open-source efforts later revived the Wi-Fi robotic rabbit; a crowdfunding campaign also proposed a Raspberry Pi-based version. Open-source contributors and project supporters. Current project and server status are not verified; this does not show that every original unit works today.
Sony Dash HID-C10 Sony discontinued support. A community patch let displays connect to Chumby servers. Community contributors. The report describes restored network functions at the time, not current availability.

Pebble: services and source code kept the ecosystem alive

Pebble’s company ceased operations in 2016. The watches relied on online services for functions including the app store, weather, language packs, and voice dictation. When Fitbit planned to shut down those servers, developers and former employees formed Rebble to reproduce services and preserve the ecosystem. iFixit’s account describes the practical concern: owners feared losing apps, weather, and other web-enabled functions (iFixit, October 18, 2019).

On January 27, 2025, Google announced that it was releasing most Pebble OS source code to help volunteers. Google reported that more than two million watches had been sold over four years and that developers had created more than ten thousand apps and watchfaces (Google Open Source Blog, January 27, 2025).

The release is useful groundwork, not a ready-to-build firmware package. Google says proprietary chipset support and the Bluetooth stack were removed; the released code will not compile or link as provided. It also says replacements for stripped-out pieces and updates to code that had gone unmaintained were needed. Open sourcing software can make maintenance more possible, but it does not automatically replace proprietary components or restore every online service.

Stadia Controller: a cloud-gaming pad became a Bluetooth gamepad

After Stadia shut down, Google announced a self-serve firmware tool to enable Bluetooth connections on Stadia Controllers. That made the controller reusable as a generic Bluetooth gamepad rather than leaving it tied to Stadia. Ars Technica reported the announcement in January 2023, quoting a Google Stadia forum community manager: “Next week we’ll be releasing a self-serve tool to enable Bluetooth connections on your Stadia Controller.” The report establishes the announcement and intended use, not the tool’s availability today (Ars Technica, January 2023).

Chumby: volunteers tried to preserve the networked alarm clock

Chumby combined an alarm clock with glanceable information and media. When its company ceased operations in 2012, some functions depended on backend services that were no longer assured. Engadget’s retrospective says volunteers continued backend support for a period and that revival efforts aimed to keep the devices useful (Engadget, March 3, 2020). That account documents a community effort, not the present status of Chumby servers.

Nabaztag: an open-source path for a Wi-Fi rabbit

The Nabaztag is a Wi-Fi-connected robotic rabbit. Support ended in 2011, and open-source efforts later revived the device. Engadget also reported a crowdfunding campaign for a Raspberry Pi-based version. Those efforts show how contributors sought to keep the idea alive, but they do not establish that all original Nabaztag units work now or that setting one up is straightforward (Engadget, March 3, 2020).

Sony Dash HID-C10: a community patch restored a route to Chumby servers

Sony’s Dash HID-C10 was a network-connected display whose official support was discontinued. Engadget reported that a community patch enabled the displays to connect to Chumby servers, restoring network functions at the time (Engadget, March 3, 2020). This is a record of a past connection workaround, not confirmation that those servers or the patch remain available.

What to check before relying on a revived device

A community revival can mean different things: a replacement server, an app ecosystem maintained by volunteers, an open-source code release, or a firmware change that unlocks a different connection. Before counting on an old gadget for daily use, verify the exact model and the current status of the relevant service or tool. A historical report can show that a workaround existed without proving it still operates, and preserving software does not guarantee that hardware-specific or proprietary components have been replaced.
