For a first customisable mechanical keyboard, decide first whether you want a ready-to-use hot-swap board or a barebone kit that needs separate parts. Then narrow the choice by layout: the picks below cover full-size, compact and Alice-style designs. This is a needs-based shortlist, not a verified market ranking or hands-on comparison.
What “customisable” means when you shop
A hot-swap keyboard has sockets that let you change compatible switches without soldering. A barebone kit is less complete: depending on the model, you may need to buy switches and keycaps separately. Check the exact box contents before comparing a kit’s cost with an assembled board.

Choose by layout and desk needs
Full-size: keep the numpad
The Q6 Max and V6 are the full-size choices here. Their number pads can be useful for frequent numeric entry, but a full-size board takes more desk space. If you rarely use the numpad, a compact layout may leave more room for mouse movement.
Compact: reduce the footprint
The 65% MonsGeek M7 is a 68-key barebone kit, while the Aula F75 is a compact candidate whose exact variant needs checking. Compact layouts save space by omitting or rearranging keys; make sure the resulting access to navigation and function keys suits your work.

Alice: try the arrangement before committing
The MonsGeek M6 uses an Alice-style layout with an angled, divided key arrangement. That shape may appeal to some typists, but it does not establish an ergonomic benefit for every person. If possible, assess the layout in person or buy from a seller with a return policy that works for you.

Compare build completeness, connectivity, and software
- Build completeness: Find out whether switches, keycaps, cable, and other parts are included. A barebone kit can require additional purchases.
- Switch compatibility: Check pin count and socket type for the exact model. Do not assume that a switch fits just because another board in the same range is hot-swappable.
- Connectivity: Confirm whether the specific SKU supports wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz connections. Product-family names alone do not establish that every variant offers the same modes.
- Programming: Verify the model’s configuration software or firmware support and whether it works with your operating system before relying on remapping or per-key customization.
- Ownership details: Compare current price, dimensions, weight, noise, warranty or support, return terms, and availability using the exact regional listing. These can vary and are not established by feature descriptions alone.
A practical first-build decision
- Choose your layout: Decide whether you need a numpad, want a compact footprint, or are specifically interested in an Alice arrangement.
- Choose your starting point: Pick an assembled hot-swap board if you want to use it with minimal setup; choose a barebone kit only if you are prepared to source and fit any missing components.
- Check compatibility: Match switches and keycaps to the board’s socket and layout. The Q6 Max’s stated 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style compatibility is model-specific evidence, not a universal standard for all boards.
