If your PC’s sound is missing, crackly, quiet or coming from the wrong place, the cause is often a setting or a loose connection, not broken hardware. The five mistakes below are a practical grouping drawn from Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guidance. They are not a ranked list of the most common causes, because no source establishes how often each one occurs. The steps target Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 differences are flagged where they matter.
Mistake 1: Sending sound to the wrong output device
When a PC has several possible outputs, Windows can send audio to a monitor, dock, headset or another device instead of your speakers. Microsoft’s guidance starts here: confirm the output you want is the one selected.

- Click the speaker icon in the taskbar’s quick settings area.
- Open the sound output (device) list and pick the speakers or headphones you intend to use.
- For USB or HDMI equipment, check that the connected device is the selected default output, where Windows offers that option. In Windows 11 this is usually under Settings > System > Sound.
Menu names can vary with Windows release, device maker and driver package, so look for the equivalent labels if yours differ.
Mistake 2: Overlooking a loose connection or a volume control
Microsoft’s checklist includes basics that are easy to skip when you assume something is broken:
#1 Best Overall
- External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
- Make sure speaker and headphone cords are firmly seated.
- If the device is USB, try a different USB port.
- Check the hardware volume control (a knob or inline control) and Windows’ own volume and mute state.
Treat buying anything as a late step. A replacement cable, such as a 3.5 mm audio cable, makes sense only if inspection or testing with another cable or device shows that your existing cable is damaged or unreliable. Match the connector type and the length your setup needs.
Mistake 3: Leaving the device muted or disabled
A device can be present in the list but muted, or disabled outright. Check the device list and the device’s settings to confirm your intended output is enabled and not muted. Do this before reinstalling any drivers, because it is faster and rules out a simple cause. Microsoft’s “no sound plays from speakers or headphones” guidance treats device selection and status as part of the first checks.

Mistake 4: Assuming audio enhancements always improve sound
Enhancements are processing effects applied by Windows or the driver. Microsoft says they can sometimes cause audio problems, and it lists them as one possible factor in distorted or crackling sound. That doesn’t mean everyone should disable them. Use it as a reversible test:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select your output device.
- Turn audio enhancements off, or choose the “off” option for them if your driver presents one.
- Play something that reproduced the problem.
- If nothing changes, turn them back on if you preferred the sound with them.
Mistake 5: Treating a software or driver problem as dead hardware
When the basics don’t help, run Windows’ audio troubleshooter before buying a new headset, speakers or amplifier. In Windows 11 it is typically under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

Microsoft says that after an update, audio can be lost because of an incompatible driver or because audio services fail to start. For distorted or crackling sound it lists several possible contributors:
- audio enhancements
- unsupported audio formats
- driver issues
- stopped audio services
For quiet sound, Microsoft points to its low-volume troubleshooting page. If uninstalling and reinstalling the driver is needed, it says to get the driver from the device manufacturer’s website. Updating a driver won’t fix every case, so work through the earlier checks first. Avoid registry edits, BIOS changes or driver downloads from random sites; none of Microsoft’s guidance calls for them.

One historical note: Microsoft Learn documents a USB audio issue on Windows 10 version 1703, where a device-specific driver didn’t support the WaveRT port. It is narrow and old, and it isn’t a general explanation for current USB audio failures.
The order to work through
| Step | Check | What it rules out |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Select the intended output device | Sound going to a monitor, dock or other device |
| 2 | Hardware volume, Windows mute, cable seating, another USB port | Loose or faulty connections, muted audio |
| 3 | Confirm the device is enabled and selected | A disabled device |
| 4 | Turn enhancements off and retest | Effects causing distortion or crackling |
| 5 | Run the audio troubleshooter, then check drivers and audio services; use the manufacturer’s site for reinstalls | Driver or service faults, especially after an update |
If you’re searching for help, Microsoft’s own labels for these problems are useful phrases: “no sound plays from speakers or headphones,” “distorted or crackling audio” and “low or quiet sound.”
