Five practical habits can help you reason more clearly while using AI coding tools: define the problem, read before rewriting, debug with a hypothesis, test edge cases, and use AI for critique rather than unquestioned answers. These are evidence-informed practices, not five interventions proven to improve every programmer’s results; whether they improve your own work depends on how you apply them.
What coding habits improve problem solving?
Start by making your reasoning visible. Before asking an assistant to generate code, write down what the program should do, what constraints matter, and what you need to find out next. Then keep checking your understanding as you read, change, and test the code.

The Association for Computing Machinery’s July 21, 2026 report says more than 750 educators across 49 countries emphasized skills including program design, code comprehension, debugging, testing, and critical evaluation of AI-generated output. That is evidence of what educators prioritize, not proof that any particular five-step routine produces better outcomes. ACM’s report announcement

1. State the problem and split it into smaller questions
Before coding, describe the expected behavior in plain language. Note the inputs, outputs, constraints, and any cases that could change the answer. Then choose the smallest useful next step: inspect an existing function, reproduce a bug, or write one test for a key behavior.

For example, instead of asking an AI assistant to “fix the date bug,” first specify the input date, the expected output, and what the program currently returns. That turns a vague request into a checkable problem. Breaking the work down is a practical way to apply program-design skills; the ACM report does not establish this exact routine as a proven intervention.
2. Read before rewriting
Trace the relevant code before changing it, including code an AI assistant has just generated. Identify where the data comes from, what each important function returns, and which parts of the program depend on them. Try to explain the code’s current behavior in a sentence before deciding what to replace.

This can prevent a rewrite from masking the actual issue or introducing a new one. Code comprehension was among the capabilities educators reported emphasizing to ACM, but the report does not show that reading first will improve every individual task.

Debugging is more useful when each check distinguishes between possible causes. Describe the observed behavior, predict one cause, run a focused check, and revise your explanation based on the result.
- Observe: Record the input and the unexpected output or error.
- Predict: State one plausible cause, such as a value being converted to the wrong type.
- Check: Inspect or log that value at the point where the behavior diverges.
- Update: Keep, revise, or reject the hypothesis based on what the check shows.
Anthropic’s January 2026 study summary reported that the largest quiz-score gap between its study groups appeared on debugging questions. The summary does not provide a numeric effect size, and that finding does not establish that all AI use weakens debugging ability. Anthropic’s coding-skills study
Workflow data is a different kind of evidence. Anthropic’s analysis of approximately 400,000 Claude Code sessions from October 2025 through April 2026 reported that the share of sessions spent debugging fell by nearly half over those seven months. This describes activity in one product’s sessions; it does not measure whether developers’ underlying debugging skills declined. Anthropic’s Claude Code usage analysis
4. Test the behavior and edge cases
Turn the expected behavior into a check. A test, a small script, or a carefully chosen manual example can compare what the program should do with what it actually does. Include cases beyond the ordinary path when they matter: empty input, a boundary value, malformed data, or an unexpected sequence of actions.
When a check fails, use the specific failing input and result to guide the next debugging step. Context can matter for AI-assisted work, too: a 2026 exploratory study of novice programmers describes performance on complex problem solving and program repair as dependent on context, including failed test cases. It does not establish a universal effect for all programmers or tasks. The novice-programmer study

5. Use AI for critique and explanation, then verify
AI can help generate alternatives, explain unfamiliar code, or suggest test cases. Keep the problem statement and relevant code context in the conversation, and ask the assistant to explain its reasoning or identify assumptions. Then check its suggestions against your requirements and the program’s observed behavior before adopting them.
- Ask for two possible causes of a bug and a small check that could distinguish them.
- Ask what assumptions a proposed change makes about inputs or dependencies.
- Ask for edge cases to test, then decide which ones apply to your program.
- After a change, run the relevant tests and read the resulting code yourself.
The ACM report identifies critical evaluation of AI-generated output as an educational priority. Anthropic’s study and workflow analyses measure different things, while JetBrains’ April 2026 account reports no statistically significant change in AI users’ debugging behavior in its telemetry analysis. Its survey respondents described code readability differently: 43.5% reported improvement, 6.5% decline, and 50% no change. Those findings reflect that study’s measures and respondents, not a general causal verdict about AI and programming skill. JetBrains’ developer-workflows research
How can you use AI to learn coding without relying on it?
Keep yourself responsible for the parts that reveal whether you understand the problem: state the expected behavior, follow the code, choose a useful check, and explain why a change works. Use the assistant to make those steps easier to carry out, not to skip them. A useful reflection after a task is whether you can explain the solution and investigate a similar failure without asking for the same answer again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAre AI coding tools hurting programming skills?
The evidence described here does not support a simple yes-or-no answer. A quiz finding about debugging, product-session activity, telemetry, and survey perceptions are different measures; none by itself proves a universal effect on skill. Results may also depend on the task and the context available to the learner. The practical response is to use AI while preserving opportunities to reason, verify, and explain the work.
