For a college laptop, choose by the software and coursework you need to run—not by a model-family name or an unverified “best” ranking. These five candidates cover macOS, Windows, and ChromeOS, but the available sources do not establish one shared test protocol, identical configurations, or a verified current price for each. Treat them as a use-case shortlist, not a controlled five-way review; check the exact configuration and retailer price before buying.
How to choose a budget laptop for college
Start with your required applications and campus workflow. Check whether your courses require Windows-only software, macOS applications, browser-based tools, secure exam software, particular printers, or peripherals. Ask your college or department if compatibility is unclear. A Chromebook can suit browser-centered work, but it is not a safe choice until you have confirmed that required software and campus systems work in ChromeOS.

Next, compare the complete listing: exact processor, memory, storage, display, ports, weight, operating system, and delivered price. Product families can include substantially different configurations, and an attractive base model may not be the one described in a review. For demanding workloads such as video editing, 3D rendering, or specialized engineering applications, confirm the software’s system requirements before choosing entry-level hardware.
The sources below identify plausible student and budget candidates, but they do not establish that every configuration currently meets a particular price ceiling. No common independent battery test across all five was collected, so manufacturer estimates should not be read as directly comparable results.

Five candidates by student use case
1. MacBook Neo: compact macOS option
Consider the MacBook Neo if your coursework works on macOS and you want a 13-inch laptop. Apple lists an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, and either 256GB or 512GB of SSD storage; its display is 13 inches with a 2408-by-1506 resolution. Those are Apple’s listed specifications, not evidence that every workload will suit this configuration. In particular, verify that 8GB of memory and the storage capacity you select are sufficient for your applications and files. Apple’s MacBook Neo technical specifications describe the product details.
Apple reports up to 11 hours of wireless-web battery life. Its test used pre-production MacBook Neo systems browsing 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi; Apple says actual battery life varies by use and configuration. Treat that as a manufacturer test claim, not an independent result or a direct comparison with the other candidates. Apple’s technical specifications include the test qualification.
2. HP OmniBook 3 14: Windows candidate, configuration matters
Some 16GB variants of the HP OmniBook 3 14 have been identified in under-$700 coverage as Windows candidates. That does not establish that every 14-hu0000-series configuration has 16GB of memory or sells below that ceiling today. Match the listing’s full model or SKU to the configuration you intend to buy. HP’s series specifications note that display choices depend on configuration and give a starting weight of 1.4 kg; HP also says weight varies with configuration and components. HP’s specifications for the OmniBook 3 14-hu0000 series are the reference for those series-level details.

This is the more sensible candidate than a Chromebook if your courses need Windows software, provided the exact processor, memory, display, and storage meet those applications’ requirements. The series page alone does not identify which configuration is on sale at a given retailer.
3. Dell XPS 13: consider only if its actual price fits
The Dell XPS 13 is a possible thin-and-light Windows choice, but the available company material does not establish a current sale price or that a configuration fits a budget ceiling. Dell states that the 2026 design weighs 1 kg and offers up to 17 hours of streaming battery life. Those are manufacturer statements, not independently measured results; Dell’s claim should not be compared directly with Apple’s wireless-web figure because the stated activities and test conditions differ. Check the exact configuration and price before treating it as a budget option. Dell’s 2026 XPS 13 article is the source for its design and battery claims.
4. Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1: for browser-centered coursework
Student-laptop coverage presents the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 as a value Chromebook option. Consider it when your work is primarily browser-based and your school’s services, exams, and peripherals support ChromeOS. The available information here does not specify a particular configuration or establish its current price, so inspect the exact retailer listing rather than assuming that every version has the same hardware.

Before buying, check whether any required desktop applications have ChromeOS versions or an approved web alternative. Confirm exam-proctoring requirements and access to campus printers and other peripherals with your school. If a required application is Windows- or macOS-only, choose a compatible laptop instead.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Acer Aspire Go 15: verify the specific listing
The Acer Aspire Go 15 appears in student and value coverage as a budget candidate, but the available material does not provide an official SKU-level specification. Do not buy based on the family name alone: check the processor, memory, storage, screen, operating system, and current price for the precise listing. Compare those details with your course software’s requirements. Without a verified configuration, there is not enough evidence to recommend a particular Aspire Go 15 variant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before checkout
- Required software: Confirm the operating system and hardware requirements for course applications, exams, and campus systems.
- Exact configuration: Match the retailer’s SKU to the processor, memory, storage, display, and operating system you need. Do not assume every model in a family is equivalent.
- Total price: Check the current delivered price, stock, and return terms for the specific configuration. The cited coverage does not supply a single current price date or verify that all five options meet one ceiling.
- Battery claims: Distinguish manufacturer estimates from independent testing. Different test activities do not provide a like-for-like runtime comparison.
- Daily use: Check weight, keyboard, screen, ports, and whether you need adapters for your campus setup.
Sources and comparison limits
Candidate selection draws on RTINGS’ under-$700 laptop coverage and TechRadar’s student-laptop coverage, alongside the manufacturer specifications and statements linked in the relevant sections. TechRadar’s college-focused recommendations are also available in its cheap college laptop article. These sources do not amount to one consistent five-laptop test: there is no common protocol, verified set of identical configurations, or independently measured battery comparison across the candidates.
