Recommended Free Tools
The best pCloud alternative depends on what you want to improve: Proton Drive is a strong fit when privacy is the priority; Google Drive suits people already using Google services; OneDrive pairs naturally with Windows and Microsoft 365; Dropbox emphasizes familiar syncing and sharing; and Sync.com is another option for privacy-minded users. These are use-case matches, not the result of a new head-to-head test. There is no universal winner: compare the privacy model, storage allocation, collaboration tools, recovery features, regional price and billing period before moving your files.
At a glance: five alternatives for different needs
| Service | Best fit | Useful details | Price context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Drive | People who put privacy first | Proton describes the service as end-to-end encrypted and offers protected or expiring share links. Its product page listed 5 GB on the free plan and 200 GB for Drive Plus. | The retrieved product page did not provide a legible Drive Plus price. Proton’s feature descriptions are vendor claims. |
| Google Drive / Google One | People already using Google services | Integrates with Google services and search; storage is shared across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail on Google One plans. | Google’s US Google AI Pro page listed 5 TB for US$19.99/month. This is an AI bundle, not a storage-only subscription. |
| Microsoft OneDrive | Windows and Microsoft 365 users | Microsoft 365 Personal includes 1 TB; Family offers up to 6 TB, allocated as 1 TB per person for up to six people. | Microsoft’s US page listed Personal at US$9.99/month and Family at US$12.99/month. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. |
| Dropbox | People who value familiar syncing and sharing workflows | Dropbox Plus lists 2 TB, 30-day recovery for deleted files and transfers up to 50 GB. | The retrieved page showed AU$184.67/year for Plus. That Australian price should not be treated as a price for other regions. |
| Sync.com | People weighing privacy and secure sharing | Its pricing page displayed team storage tiers of 1 TB, 2 TB and 10 TB per user, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee. | The displayed prices were promotional and team-oriented; the extracted information does not establish a stable individual-plan price. |
Prices and plan details above are region- and date-sensitive. Microsoft and Google figures reflect US pages checked October 7, 2026; Dropbox and Sync.com figures reflect the regional pages retrieved on that date. Confirm the current offer, billing interval and terms on the provider’s page before subscribing.

Which pCloud alternative should you choose?
Proton Drive: privacy-focused storage and sharing
Proton says Drive uses end-to-end encryption, supports password-protected or expiring share links, and is available in a browser and desktop and mobile apps. It also lists automatic photo backup. Proton says its document and spreadsheet editing is end-to-end encrypted by default. These are Proton’s product claims, not an independent security assessment; encryption by itself is not enough to establish that a service is universally safer.
Proton’s product page described its approach this way: “Proton Drive protects your content with end-to-end encryption, so can you enjoy the flexibility of cloud storage with the confidence that even we can’t see your files.” The page listed 5 GB free and 200 GB for Drive Plus, but the retrieved price for Drive Plus was not legible. Check Proton Drive’s current features and plans.

Google Drive: a practical choice for Google users
Google Drive is a natural fit if your files already live alongside Google services and you value integrated search and collaboration. Zapier’s August 25, 2026 comparison listed 15 GB free and a personal storage starting point of US$1.99/month billed annually for 100 GB. Google Workspace is a separate business bundle, so do not assume that a personal Google One plan includes the same features.
Google’s current US Google One page listed Google AI Pro at US$19.99/month with 5 TB shared across Drive, Photos and Gmail. That plan includes AI features and is not a like-for-like storage-only comparison with a basic cloud plan. Prices and offers vary by region; check Google One’s plan page for the offer available to you.

Microsoft OneDrive: best aligned with Windows and Microsoft 365
OneDrive makes sense if you already work in Windows or use Microsoft 365 apps and want storage bundled with that subscription. Microsoft’s US page listed a free account with 5 GB, Microsoft 365 Personal at US$9.99/month with 1 TB, and Microsoft 365 Family at US$12.99/month with up to 6 TB. Family storage is allocated as 1 TB per person for up to six people; the page also showed a yearly Family price of US$129.99/year. The value depends on whether you will use the bundled apps and seats, not storage capacity alone.

Dropbox: familiar sync, sharing and file recovery
Dropbox remains a recognizable option for file syncing, sharing and third-party integrations. TechRadar describes it as known for those capabilities, but that review analysis is not a promise of a particular sync speed or performance on your devices. Dropbox’s Plus page lists 2 TB, 30 days to restore deleted files and transfers up to 50 GB. The retrieved price was AU$184.67/year, so it should not be used as a quote for a reader outside that regional storefront.

Sync.com: another privacy-oriented option
Sync.com is worth comparing if privacy and secure sharing weigh heavily in your decision. Its official pricing page displayed team plans with 1 TB, 2 TB and 10 TB per user and advertised a 30-day money-back guarantee. The page showed a 50% promotion and team-oriented prices; the available information does not establish a stable price for an individual plan.
Tom’s Guide reported that, in its own test, uploading a 5 GB folder took about 10 minutes and downloading it took about 12 minutes. That is one publication’s result under its test conditions, not a general speed guarantee: connection, device, workload and method can change the outcome. See Sync.com’s pricing page for current plans.

How to compare plans without being misled by the headline price
Compare the amount you will actually pay over the billing period you plan to keep, in your region. A monthly equivalent based on annual billing is not the same as paying month to month, and a promotion may not reflect the renewal price. Also separate storage-only plans from bundles that include office software, email, AI features, VPNs or family seats.
- Storage and allocation: Check total capacity, whether it is shared with email or photos, and whether family or team storage is divided per person.
- Privacy and encryption: Look for the provider’s stated encryption design and sharing controls. Do not treat the word “encrypted” as proof that the provider cannot access file contents.
- Sync, backup and recovery: Determine whether the service syncs working files across devices, backs up selected folders, or offers both. Check recovery windows and version history; synchronization alone is not a separate backup.
- Sharing and collaboration: Compare link controls, expiration or password options, editing tools and how the service works with the apps your collaborators already use.
- Platforms and migration: Confirm support for your computers and phones, connected workflows, and shared folders before moving. Migration effort can outweigh a small difference in monthly cost.
How to switch from pCloud without losing access to important files
- Inventory what you use. List files, shared folders, active links, connected devices and any workflows that depend on pCloud.
- Choose a plan based on the whole workload. Check the required platforms, storage allocation, sharing controls and billing terms on the new provider’s current regional plan page.
- Move a small test folder first. Upload a representative set of files, then download and open them from another device. Check names, folder structure and sharing behavior before transferring everything.
- Keep the old copy while verifying. Do not remove your pCloud files until you have checked that the new copies are complete and usable.
- Keep an independent backup of important data. A sync service can replicate deletions or unwanted changes; do not make it your only copy.
Do not assume there is a one-click migration path: no current official migration tool and its limitations are established here.
When self-hosted Nextcloud is a better kind of alternative
If you want more control over where your files are hosted, Nextcloud is a different route from subscribing to one of the five hosted services. You must choose a deployment, host it, secure it and maintain it. The official Nextcloud install page supports the software-install path, but no particular NAS model’s compatibility was verified. A NAS is not required for Proton Drive, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or Sync.com.
