Start by checking whether a service is available to you, then compare its full costs, security disclosures and the specific legal entity serving your location.
Why “best” depends on the person and country
Exchange choice is not just a matter of brand recognition. A platform may offer different services, assets, payment methods or legal arrangements in different places, and fees can change with trading volume or account tier.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s 2025 consumer survey asked 1,044 respondents who had used a centralized or decentralized exchange what they considered when choosing one. Ease of use was cited by 50%, reputation by 39%, safety and security by 34%, and transaction cost by 30%. These are reported priorities, not an independent assessment of which exchange performs best. FCA, Research Note: Cryptoassets consumer research 2025 (wave 6).
What the available exchange comparisons establish
The same FCA report found that, among surveyed UK cryptoasset users who had used an exchange, 61% said they had used Coinbase and 44% said they had used Binance. These are self-reported survey usage figures, not market shares, mutually exclusive choices or evidence that either platform is safer or better. FCA, 2025.

For prices, Kraken’s own comparison page, published in June 2026, lists the following starting maker/taker rates. They are operator-reported figures, not a like-for-like quote for every user; confirm the live schedule and your applicable tier before trading. Kraken Learn, “Best Crypto Exchanges in 2026: What To Know Before You Trade”.
| Exchange | Maker rate shown | Taker rate shown | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | 0.25% | 0.40% | Starting rates reported by Kraken in its June 2026 comparison; check the live schedule and eligibility. |
| Binance | 0.10% | 0.10% | Starting rates reported by Kraken in its June 2026 comparison; check Binance’s live schedule and eligibility. |
A trading fee alone does not tell you what a transaction will cost. Include any spread, funding or withdrawal charge that applies to your payment method, asset and account tier. The comparison page itself says availability and functionality vary by location.
How to compare exchanges for your situation
- Confirm local availability and the contracting entity. Identify the exact company that would provide the service in your country, and check the applicable local terms and regulator records. A registration or authorization applies to a particular legal entity and service; it is not a blanket approval of every product offered under a brand.
- Check the assets and services you actually need. Search the platform’s current country-specific list for the assets, order types and services you intend to use. Do not assume an asset or feature available in one country is available in another.
- Calculate the all-in cost for your expected activity. Use the rate for your likely maker or taker orders and account tier, then add relevant deposit, withdrawal, spread and funding costs. Compare the same trade size, payment route and assumptions across platforms.
- Review account protection and custody disclosures. Check available sign-in protections, withdrawal controls, custody arrangements and what the provider says about safeguarding customer assets. Read disclosures for their scope rather than treating a single security claim as a complete risk assessment.
- Check support and exit routes. Before depositing, confirm how to contact support and whether you can withdraw the asset through a method available in your location. Review any limits, processing conditions and charges in the current terms.
What licensing disclosures do—and do not—tell you
Kraken’s support page lists jurisdiction-specific regulatory information, including an Irish MiCA authorization and UK service restrictions. Binance’s legal page likewise lists country-level entity statuses; it specifically says its New Zealand registration does not mean it is actively regulated or overseen by a New Zealand regulator. Those examples illustrate why checking the relevant entity and service matters; they do not establish that either company can provide every service in every country. Kraken Support, updated August 17, 2026; Binance, “Licences, Registrations and Other Legal Matters,” accessed October 7, 2026.

Kraken describes its own process this way: “Kraken publishes a Proof of Reserves twice per year — a cryptographically verifiable audit that confirms Kraken holds sufficient assets to cover 100% of all client balances.” Kraken says an independent third-party auditor conducts the process. This is Kraken’s account of its twice-yearly audit, not proof that every exchange publishes equivalent evidence. It also does not, by itself, establish the full state of a company’s balance sheet or eliminate custody, operational or withdrawal risks. Kraken Learn, “How Kraken is regulated,” published July 9, 2026.
Rank #3
Can you name five winners from these comparisons?
Not responsibly on the evidence presented here. Coinbase and Binance appear in the FCA’s UK usage survey; the fee figures available for Kraken and Binance come from Kraken’s own comparison. That is not a consistent, independently verified basis for choosing five winners across availability, fees, assets, security and support. Treat those names and figures as limited evidence to investigate, not as a recommendation or ranking. Before opening an account, verify current local terms, fee schedules and supported services directly with the provider and relevant regulator.
