5 Affordable Student Laptops: What to Choose for College

Five student laptop picks for different needs, from Windows all-rounders to Chromebooks, plus what to verify before buying.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this US-focused guide, “affordable” means a laptop priced under $500; the broader options section also covers models that may fit a budget under $700. The five picks serve different student needs rather than claiming a universal ranking. Prices and configurations change, so confirm the exact processor, memory, storage, and seller price before buying—and check your school’s software requirements first.

Which affordable student laptop should you buy?

Choose by operating system and coursework before comparing screen size or discounts. For general Windows schoolwork, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x is the strongest all-rounder among these candidates if your required applications run on its Arm-based Snapdragon processor. For a lower-cost Windows option for basic tasks, consider the Acer Aspire Go 15. If ChromeOS works for your classes, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 offers a larger display, while the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 is a more compact writing-and-research choice. The HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch suits students who want a larger Chromebook screen.

Five affordable student laptop picks

1. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x: best all-round Windows candidate under $500

Tom’s Guide names the IdeaPad Slim 3x its best laptop under $500 overall. The reviewed configuration has a 15.3-inch 1920 × 1200 IPS touchscreen, Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Tom’s Guide measured 16 hours and 29 minutes of battery life in its comparison test and praised its performance, keyboard, and endurance. It also reported a $449 Walmart price when its page was accessed; that is an observed price, not a live quote. Some retailer listings offer 512GB SSD configurations, so check the specific listing rather than assuming every model has the same storage.

#1 Best Overall
HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

The key caveats are a dim display, weaker gaming performance, and possible application compatibility issues with the Arm-based processor. Before choosing it for a course that depends on specialized Windows software, verify that the exact application supports this system. Tom’s Guide’s under-$500 laptop guide provides its review details.

2. Acer Aspire Go 15: lower-cost Windows option for basic schoolwork

Tom’s Guide identifies the Aspire Go 15 as its best under-$500 choice for students on a budget. Its reviewed Intel configuration includes a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 display, Intel Core i3-N305, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a listed weight of 3.8 pounds. In Tom’s Guide’s testing, it handled basic school tasks and delivered 10 hours and 15 minutes of battery life. The publication reported a $299 price at the time of access, not a guaranteed current price.

This is a basic-workload pick, not a performance laptop: the guide notes limited performance and a poor 720p webcam. Aspire Go 15 configurations vary, including Intel and AMD models, so verify the processor and other specifications on the listing. Tom’s Guide’s review and comparison cover the candidate.

TechRadar says it can suit writing and online research, but advises against demanding work such as video editing and 3D rendering. Its review also notes fan noise under heavier loads.

5. HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch (2025): larger-screen Chromebook

TechRadar lists a configuration with an Intel Core i3-N305, integrated graphics, 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, 128GB of UFS storage, and a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 display with a 144Hz refresh rate. It describes the laptop as better suited to workloads such as business studies and creative writing than demanding video editing or 3D rendering.

When a budget under $700 makes more sense

If your schoolwork needs a different operating system or more capable configuration, expanding the budget may open up alternatives. RTINGS’ page, updated August 28, 2026, names the Apple MacBook Neo (A18 Pro, 2026) its best laptop under $700 and the HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025), specifically its 16GB variants, its best Windows laptop under $700. RTINGS says its recommendations account for testing, price, visitor feedback, and availability; those labels are its editorial picks, not a guarantee of fit for every course. Compare the exact model and current price, and confirm software compatibility. See RTINGS’ under-$700 laptop recommendations.

Lenovo also maintains a US student-laptop selection under $700 and describes uses such as note-taking, online research, and group projects. That manufacturer page is useful for seeing the category and available products, but it is not an independent comparison. Visit Lenovo’s US student laptop selection.

How to choose a student laptop that will work for your courses

Confirm software and operating-system requirements

Windows, ChromeOS, and macOS are not interchangeable for every application. Check course pages, department guidance, or your school’s IT requirements for required software, and verify that the exact laptop configuration supports it. This check is especially important for engineering, creative, and other specialized programs. For Snapdragon-based Windows systems, confirm Arm compatibility for any essential applications.

Match the workload to the hardware

Writing papers, browsing research, and attending video calls are different workloads from coding, engineering applications, gaming, video editing, or 3D work. The budget Chromebooks here are aimed at lighter productivity; the cited reviews caution against demanding rendering and editing. Do not assume a laptop is suitable for a course merely because it can handle everyday web tasks.

Check the exact configuration, not just the model name

A product family may be sold with different processors, memory, storage, and displays. Compare the configuration on the seller’s page with the one described in a review. Consider whether the stated storage will cover your files and applications, and check whether memory can be upgraded if that matters to you; the cited reviews do not establish a universal memory or storage minimum for all students.

Balance screen, weight, and battery evidence

A 15.6-inch screen can provide more room for documents and research, while a 14-inch model may be easier to carry. Compare the listed weight and display resolution, and consider keyboard comfort if you write for long stretches. Battery figures above are results reported by the publications’ tests, not promises of how long every student will get: usage, settings, and workload affect real-world endurance.
