Ultra HD Blu-ray (4K UHD) discs are region-free, but standard Blu-ray discs can be locked to Region A, B, or C. A UHD player is required to play a UHD disc; if a movie set includes both UHD and standard Blu-ray discs, check the format and region markings on each disc separately.
Which 4K Blu-ray discs are region-locked?
Sony says Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free and can play on devices that support the Ultra HD Blu-ray format, regardless of where the discs were purchased. That does not mean every disc in a 4K movie package is region-free: a combo pack may include a separate standard Blu-ray disc, which can have a regional code. Sony’s guidance on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray region coding was last modified May 25, 2022.

Standard Blu-ray discs may be coded for Region A, B, or C. In general, a player plays standard Blu-ray discs from its own region unless the disc or player is region-free or the player documentation specifies otherwise. Check the disc or its case and the player’s manual rather than relying on the words “4K” or “region-free” alone.

Sony groups the regions as follows. These are broad geographic guides; confirm the marking on the particular disc and the supported region in the player’s documentation.

The region marking may appear on the disc or on the back of its case. Sony notes that “Region FREE” is not an official region setting: a disc described this way may have no region flag or may carry all three A/B/C flags. The disc and player documentation are more reliable than a seller’s shorthand.
What equipment do you need to play a UHD disc?
A standard Blu-ray player cannot play an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) says UHD discs require an Ultra HD Blu-ray player; its guidance also says UHD players play current Blu-ray content. BDA’s Ultra HD Blu-ray format guidance covers the format and player compatibility. Check the manual for a specific player if you also need DVD playback, since DVD support is common but not universal.

UHD describes a disc format and its video capabilities, not a regional restriction. The BDA identifies Ultra HD resolution as 3840 × 2160 pixels, compared with Full HD at 1920 × 1080, and says the format supports HDR and frame rates up to 60 frames per second. Its benefits material lists 66 GB dual-layer and 100 GB triple-layer disc capacities. Those specifications do not indicate whether a standard Blu-ray included in the same package is region-locked. How to check a 4K movie set before buying
- Identify each disc’s format. Confirm whether it is Ultra HD Blu-ray or standard Blu-ray; a UHD player is required for the former, while standard Blu-ray follows the A/B/C regional rules.
- Inspect the region information. Look for an A, B, or C marking on the disc or case. If the seller says “region-free,” verify the disc’s markings and the player’s documentation.
- Check the player manual. Confirm support for the disc format and, for standard Blu-ray, the relevant region. Do not assume every player has the same capabilities.
- Check every disc in a combo pack separately. The UHD disc’s region-free status does not establish the status of an included standard Blu-ray disc. Verify the exact edition’s packaging or listing details.
When is a multi-region player useful?
A multi-region standard Blu-ray player may matter if you want to watch standard Blu-ray discs coded for a different region. It is not needed to overcome region coding on UHD discs, because Sony describes UHD discs as region-free; UHD playback instead requires a UHD-capable player. Verify a specific player’s supported formats, regions, and operation in its documentation before buying.

How many standard Blu-ray discs are region-locked?
The official sources cited here explain that standard Blu-ray discs use Regions A, B, and C, but do not establish what proportion of standard Blu-ray titles actually apply a regional restriction. Check the specific disc rather than assuming that all standard Blu-rays are locked or that a particular percentage is typical.
