They take different approaches: expanded content, rebuilt presentation, and modern features are not the same thing, so the best fit depends on what you want changed.
Three classic remasters, matched to what you want to play
| Game | Best fit | Documented remaster changes and additions | Platform notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition | Classic real-time strategy | 4K Ultra HD graphics, a remastered soundtrack, new content, original campaigns and expansions | Official routes cited include Microsoft Store, Steam, PC Game Pass, and PlayStation 5; regional availability may vary. |
| Diablo II: Resurrected | Action RPG | Rebuilt 3D graphics, remastered audio, new cinematics, quality-of-life changes, and cross-progression | Blizzard’s announcement and launch guide list PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch; check the current edition and local availability. |
| Command & Conquer Remastered Collection | Classic PC strategy | Remastered Command & Conquer and Red Alert content, three expansion packs, rebuilt multiplayer, modernized UI, map editor, mod support, bonus footage, and remastered music | EA’s launch announcement identified Origin and Steam as digital purchase routes. Current regional store availability is not established here. |
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the strategy pick for campaigns and breadth
Choose this if you want the familiar real-time-strategy format—building a civilization, managing resources, and commanding armies—with a substantial campaign offering and additional content. World’s Edge describes the remaster as featuring 4K Ultra HD graphics and a fully remastered soundtrack, alongside new content and the original campaigns and expansions.

The official game page claims more than 200 hours of gameplay and 35 civilizations. Those are publisher product-page figures, not independent measurements. The page also identifies “The Last Khans” as new content, with three campaigns and four civilizations. On PlayStation 5, the official listing says the edition includes the base game and the Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes expansions.
This is the clearest choice of the three if campaign volume and a large roster are your priorities. The documented changes focus on presentation and content; they do not establish how faithful or satisfying the remaster feels compared with the original.

- Display Options and Updated Visuals: 1080P graphics and enhancements for modern HD TVs Adjustable screen aspect ratios and borders Custom filter options designed to replicate classic CRT TVs and other popular screen types"
Diablo II: Resurrected is the action-RPG pick
Choose this if you want an action RPG rather than a strategy game. Blizzard describes it as a remastering of both Diablo II and its Lord of Destruction expansion. Its launch guide lists rebuilt 3D graphics, remastered audio, new cinematics, quality-of-life changes, and cross-progression.
That feature list makes the scope easier to understand: this is not just a visual refresh, but Blizzard’s official description does not by itself tell you whether any particular quality-of-life change improves the experience for you. The cited Blizzard materials list PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Check the current platform edition and availability in your region before buying.

Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is the pick for classic PC strategy
Choose this if you want a package centered on Command & Conquer and Red Alert. EA says the collection includes all three expansion packs, rebuilt multiplayer, a modernized interface, a map editor, modding support, and a bonus gallery of unreleased full-motion-video footage. Its launch announcement also claims more than seven hours of remastered music by Frank Klepacki; that is an EA announcement figure, not an independent measurement.

How to choose between them
- Pick Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition for historical strategy campaigns, civilizations, and a large amount of documented content.
- Pick Diablo II: Resurrected if you want an action-RPG and a remaster that covers the base game and its major expansion.
- Pick Command & Conquer Remastered Collection if you want classic PC strategy with documented multiplayer, map-editing, and modding features.
“Definitive” and “remastered” do not describe one consistent scope. Compare the specific changes that matter to you—graphics and audio, added campaigns or expansions, interface updates, multiplayer, or mod support. These official product and launch pages document features, but they do not provide an independent comparison of preservation or overall quality, so they do not support naming one as the most faithful remaster.
