Yes—you can get a video doorbell with app playback without paying for a recurring cloud plan. The key is how it stores recordings: some models use a separately purchased microSD card, while the Aqara G4 can also provide a limited free event-clip history. For continuous recording, check the power requirements: the Tapo D225 and Aqara G4 require wired power for 24/7 capture.

Four subscription-free video doorbells at a glance

Model Recording without a paid plan Power and recording notes Notable fit or caveat
TP-Link Tapo D225 Local microSD recording, up to 512 GB; card sold separately. Tapo Care cloud storage is optional and paid. Battery or hardwired. Manufacturer says 24/7 recording is available when hardwired; this mode does not support an existing chime. 2K QHD video, 180-degree diagonal field of view, and AI detection for people, pets, vehicles, and packages. TP-Link Tapo D225 specifications.
eufy Video Doorbell E340 Manufacturer describes local storage and use without subscription fees. Exact capacity and whether storage is included depend on details not established on the cited page. Check the current product bundle and storage configuration before buying. Two cameras, including a downward-facing view of the doorstep that can help show deliveries. eufy Video Doorbell E340 product page.
Reolink Doorbell (Battery) TechRadar reports internal microSD recording, with cloud storage optional. Battery-powered. TechRadar’s February 13, 2026 review said its reviewer did not reach Reolink’s quoted maximum of five months; that is one review’s experience, not a general battery-life result. TechRadar reports Google Home and Amazon Alexa compatibility, but no Apple HomeKit support. It also notes there is no second camera aimed at packages. TechRadar’s Reolink battery doorbell coverage.
Aqara Video Doorbell G4 Up to seven days of free event clips, plus local microSD storage up to 512 GB in the indoor chime; card not included. Runs on six AA batteries or wired power. Local 24/7 recording requires wired power. 1080p video, 162-degree field of view, and HomeKit Secure Video support. Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video service is separate from Aqara’s free event clips and local storage. Aqara Video Doorbell G4 specifications.

What “no subscription” does—and doesn’t—mean

It means the doorbell can provide at least some useful recording or playback without a recurring manufacturer cloud plan. It does not necessarily mean every feature is free or that no purchase is needed. The Tapo D225 and Aqara G4 specify microSD cards as separate purchases; the E340’s current storage capacity and bundle details should be checked with the seller. Optional cloud services may still be offered.

Also separate live view and alerts from recorded playback. A camera may show a live feed and notify you when someone arrives, while keeping clips requires local storage or a cloud service. Confirm that the app’s playback function works with the storage method you plan to use.

How to choose among these four

Choose the Tapo D225 for wired continuous recording

The D225 is the clearest fit here if your priority is 24/7 local capture: TP-Link lists hardwired 24/7 recording and microSD capacity up to 512 GB. Its 2K QHD resolution and listed person, pet, vehicle, and package detections add useful detail. The trade-off is that hardwired continuous recording does not support an existing chime, according to the manufacturer. Check the product page for installation and operating details before choosing a wiring setup.

  • No Subscription Required & Full Access to Essential Features With Zero Hidden Costs: Get real-time alerts, two-way audio, human detection, and video playback with this doorbell camera, with no subscription required; all essential features stay free, optional subscription plans are available for advanced services such as cloud storage and enhanced AI event classification
  • HDR Night Vision With Invisible 940 nm Infrared: HDR tech and high-sensitivity sensor in this doorbell camera adjust to all lighting conditions; invisible 940 nm IR fill light offers clear night vision up to 10 meters without red glow for discreet, around-the-clock security
  • Battery Life & Usage Tips for Your Doorbell Camera: In laboratory conditions, the battery lasts up to 60 days with 30 daily motion activations and 10-second video recordings; actual performance may vary based on usage and environment; extend battery life by adjusting motion sensitivity, narrowing detection zones, or avoiding high-traffic areas. (Powered by a built-in, non-removable rechargeable battery for wire-free operation.)

Choose the eufy E340 when doorstep coverage matters

The E340’s second, downward-facing camera is designed to show the floor near the door, where a package may be left. That extra angle addresses a common blind spot in a single-camera view. The cited product information describes local recording without subscription fees, but does not establish the current US storage capacity or whether a card is included, so verify those specifics for the exact bundle.

Choose the Reolink Battery model for a fully wireless option

TechRadar describes the Reolink model as battery-powered with internal microSD recording and optional cloud storage. That makes it a candidate where wiring is inconvenient. Battery runtime depends on use; the cited reviewer’s experience fell short of the brand’s quoted five-month maximum, and should not be treated as a forecast for every home. The review also says it lacks a dedicated second camera for packages.

Choose the Aqara G4 for free event history or Apple Home integration

The G4 combines up to seven days of free event clips with optional local recording to a card in its indoor chime. This provides a way to review recent motion events without a paid Aqara cloud plan, while local storage offers another recording route. For 24/7 local recording, Aqara specifies wired power. The doorbell also supports HomeKit Secure Video, which may have separate Apple service requirements; do not confuse that option with the G4’s own free clips or local card storage.

Check these details before you buy

  • Recording type: Decide whether event clips are enough or whether you need continuous footage. The Tapo D225 supports 24/7 recording when hardwired; the Aqara G4 requires wired power for local 24/7 recording.
  • Power at the door: Battery operation offers installation flexibility, but it does not automatically provide continuous recording. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for the exact mode you want.
  • Card cost and location: Confirm whether a microSD card is included, the supported capacity, and where it goes. The D225’s card is separate; the G4’s card is installed in its indoor chime and is also separate.
  • Package visibility: Look for a downward-facing or second camera if deliveries near the door matter. The E340 has a downward-facing camera; TechRadar says the Reolink Battery model does not have a second package-facing camera.
  • Smart-home compatibility: Match the doorbell to the ecosystem you use. Aqara lists HomeKit Secure Video support; TechRadar reports Google Home and Alexa compatibility for Reolink, but no HomeKit support.
  • Free-feature boundaries: Verify which alerts, playback, and storage work without a plan. A free local-recording setup and a paid optional cloud history are different services.

Battery-life estimates can vary with settings and usage. Prices, availability, retailer bundles, and current card compatibility are not established here; check the exact model and seller listing before ordering.
