How to Get Retinol Stains Out of a Pillowcase: A Cautious 3% Peroxide Pre-Wash

A Tom’s Guide writer reports that a 30-minute spot treatment with 3% hydrogen peroxide removed a yellow patch they attributed to retinol before laundering the pillow. That is one person’s result, not proof the method works on every fabric or stain. Check the care label and spot-test first; peroxide can damage some colors and delicate textiles.

How to try the reported pre-wash safely

Use this approach only if the care instructions and an inconspicuous-area test indicate that the fabric can tolerate hydrogen peroxide. Tom’s Guide published the method on September 27, 2026; its author reported success, but did not establish effectiveness across fabrics, colors, or stain ages.

  1. Check the care label. Confirm the pillowcase or washable pillow can be laundered as directed. If peroxide is unsuitable, use a fabric-safe pretreatment recommended by the textile and product labels instead.
  2. Spot-test. Apply a little 3% hydrogen peroxide to a hidden area and check for color change or damage before treating the visible stain.
  3. Apply the pre-wash. The Tom’s Guide author dabbed a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide onto the yellow patch with a light-colored cloth, left it for 30 minutes, then worked it into the fabric with an old toothbrush. The author reported that the yellow ring disappeared.
  4. Launder according to the care label. The reported method ended with a machine wash. Do not mix peroxide with other chemicals, and wear gloves when handling it.
  5. Check before drying. If the stain remains, do not put the item in the dryer: heat can set stains. Follow the fabric’s care instructions and choose a suitable pretreatment before washing again.

The author cautions against peroxide on dark-colored fabrics and delicate materials such as silk, wool, and cashmere. A successful spot-test does not establish that every stain will come out, particularly if it is old.

Why a pillow can turn yellow

A yellow mark alone does not prove retinol caused it. Tom’s Guide notes that pillow yellowing can also come from accumulated oil and moisture. Check the skincare product’s ingredients and consider the stain’s history before identifying its cause.

Retinol is one type of retinoid, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Retinoid is a broader category that includes other topical and oral products; the available account does not establish that all such formulations affect fabric in the same way.

Retinol staining is not the same as benzoyl peroxide damage

If the skincare product contains benzoyl peroxide, the mark may be bleaching rather than a removable stain. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says benzoyl peroxide can leave rusty yellowish bleached spots that cannot be removed. Treating a bleached area as though it were a stain is unlikely to restore the original color.

General stain-care guidance

The American Cleaning Institute advises treating stains promptly, blotting rather than rubbing, using a prewash stain remover or liquid detergent as appropriate, and laundering according to care instructions. Its guidance supports these general safeguards, not a claim that detergent or another treatment is proven to remove retinol stains. The sources available do not compare peroxide with detergent or oxygen bleach for this particular stain.
