Neither option guarantees that every recipient will see the image. Test both against the mail clients your recipients use, and keep shipment status, tracking details and tracking links readable even when images are unavailable.
What to test before choosing a delivery method
Run the four tests below on the same representative shipment notification and recipient-client matrix. Inspect the received message source, image visibility, fallback behavior, actual message size, and whether shipment facts and links remain usable. These are test steps, not reported results: no live sends or client-rendering tests are established here.

1. Hosted HTTPS image
Place a representative image on an HTTPS site or CDN controlled by the sender and reference it with an ordinary HTML img element, for example <img src="https://example.com/assets/logo.png" alt="Carrier name">. Confirm the URL works without authentication, redirects, or short-lived access controls. Open the email with remote images disabled, then enable them and check the result.

Hosting keeps the image outside each message, which can be more efficient when an asset recurs across bulk sends. Mailchimp Transactional recommends hosting images on the sender’s site rather than a general file-sharing service: Mailchimp Transactional outbound email guidance.

2. CID inline image
Attach a PNG or JPEG as an inline MIME part, assign it a unique Content-ID, then reference that exact ID in the HTML as src="cid:...". For example, an HTML reference such as <img src="cid:shipment-logo" alt="Carrier name"> must match the attachment’s Content-ID. Check the received message to verify both parts are present and the identifiers match.
Observe whether each recipient client renders the image inline or exposes it as an attachment. Microsoft notes that rendering depends largely on the recipient’s mail client and recommends common image formats; Nodemailer documents the matching CID and HTML-body requirements. 3. Image unavailable
Repeat the message with remote-image loading blocked or the hosted image URL deliberately unavailable. Confirm meaningful alt text and surrounding copy still explain the shipment update. Alt text is a resilience aid, not a guarantee that every client will display it identically.

FedEx Canada recommends putting shipment details, tracking number and tracking link near the top of a notification, in a mobile-friendly single-column layout. That guidance helps keep the message useful independently of its images: FedEx Canada’s shipping and delivery notification guidance.
4. Ordinary attachment
Send the same image as a conventional file attachment without a Content-ID. Check whether the recipient can identify what it is and how it relates to the shipment. An ordinary attachment is a file the reader opens; a CID image is intended to be referenced from the HTML body as an inline part.
For proof of delivery, consider whether the workflow calls for a clearly named document attachment or a secure link rather than an image embedded in the message. Carriers provide proof-of-delivery records through different mechanisms, and availability can depend on the service.

Nodemailer notes that many clients block external images by default for privacy and security reasons; this is a reason to test image-disabled behavior, not evidence that every client blocks every hosted image. Inline rendering is also client-dependent. Avoid claiming a universal compatibility rate or fixed size penalty without measuring the actual recipient clients and MIME message.

Do not make a graphic the only place where the reader can find shipment status, tracking number, estimated delivery information or the tracking action. FedEx Canada recommends placing core shipping details and the tracking link near the top and using a single-column layout for mobile readability. Send notifications that correspond to a real label or carrier status update, as its guidance advises.
- Use meaningful alt text for images that convey information; decorative images should not carry essential shipment facts.
- Keep the tracking number and link as selectable HTML text.
- Check the message on a narrow screen and with images disabled.
- For repeated images, use durable HTTPS URLs on a sender-controlled site or CDN rather than a general sharing service.
Choose the image format based on its purpose
Logo or generic product image
A reusable logo or product image usually fits hosted HTTPS delivery because the same asset can serve many messages. A product image can also help provide context: Gmail says package tracking may appear when a confirmation email includes details such as the tracking number, merchant and product name and image, order number and URL, and estimated delivery date. Package tracking is available for participating U.S. carriers and depends on the user’s Gmail settings; it is not a guarantee that a message image will appear in Gmail tracking. Proof-of-delivery signature or record
A signature image is different from a logo: it may contain personal or delivery-related information. Consider whether the record belongs in an authenticated destination or a clearly identified document rather than a broadly accessible hosted image. USPS describes proof of delivery as potentially including delivery details, recipient name, tracking number and an image of the recipient’s signature; availability depends on the mail class or signature service and applies to the stated U.S. jurisdictions. Regional carrier workflows are not interchangeable. DHL’s Malaysia guide, dated December 11, 2024, describes requesting electronic proof of delivery with or without a consignee signature and sending a copy by email: DHL Malaysia’s proof-of-delivery guide. Do not assume that workflow applies to every DHL region or service.
Document the recipient needs to keep
If a proof-of-delivery record is a document the recipient should save, label the file clearly or provide an appropriate secure link. USPS describes proof-of-delivery details through its Track and Confirm API. Carrier delivery mechanisms vary by region and service, so verify availability for the specific workflow.

- For CID images, use a unique Content-ID for each embedded image and match it exactly in the HTML
cid:reference. Postmark documents that its API can reference a CID image multiple times in one message without attaching another copy for each reference; other providers may structure payloads differently. Follow the selected provider’s current documentation: Postmark’s email API guide. - Use common formats such as PNG or JPEG for inline images, while remembering that recipient-client behavior determines rendering.
- Do not treat Base64 data URIs as a universal email-client solution. The cited provider and implementation documentation substantiates hosted URLs and CID, but does not establish broad data-URI compatibility or a reliable deliverability effect.
- Measure the actual received message size and inspect its MIME structure. No fixed message-size penalty or universal deliverability ranking is established for these choices.
