An ESP32 can take over some local smart-home functions—such as relaying supported Bluetooth sensors or sending infrared commands—but it does not automatically replace four subscriptions, and there is no verified $10 total project cost. Think of the board as a controller for a DIY build: sensors, IR parts, a display, power, a Home Assistant host, setup and maintenance can all add to the bill.
What an ESP32 can—and cannot—replace
The most realistic opportunities are specific features, not whole subscription services. A locally run ESP32 project may replace a paid app or cloud path for a supported device, or provide remote-control or monitoring functions. Whether that makes a subscription unnecessary depends on what the service actually provides and what your other devices support.

ESPHome documents projects including Bluetooth proxies, IR/RF proxies, voice assistants and media players. Espressif lists smart-home devices, consumer electronics, audio devices and low-power IoT sensor hubs among the applications for its ESP32-WROOM-32. That datasheet is version 3.8 and labels that particular module NRND (“Not Recommended For New Designs”); the status should not be generalized to every ESP32 variant. Espressif’s ESP32-WROOM-32 datasheet and ESPHome’s project catalog describe these capabilities.

| Project | Function it may replace or extend | Additional hardware | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth proxy | Some vendor-app or cloud paths for supported BLE sensors brought into Home Assistant | ESP32 board and USB power | BLE only; a compatible Home Assistant integration is required, and active connections use limited slots and resources |
| IR remote | Some separate smart-remote or remote-control functions | IR LED; optionally a receiver and driver components | ESPHome marks its IR/RF proxy component experimental; signal compatibility varies |
| IR air-conditioner control | A connected controller’s command path for supported air conditioners | IR transmitter; optionally a receiver and temperature sensor | One-way IR cannot confirm the air conditioner’s actual state |
| Local climate or status display | A basic local monitoring or control feature | Sensor, display or relay as required; possibly a separate host | Build is project-specific, not a drop-in replacement for a branded paid service |
1. Extend Bluetooth sensor reach
An ESP32 running ESPHome can act as a Bluetooth proxy, relaying supported Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices to Home Assistant. This can help bring compatible sensors within range without relying on a vendor’s cloud route. It is not a general Bluetooth relay: the target must use BLE, and Home Assistant needs an integration that supports it. ESPHome also notes that active GATT connections on ESP32 consume configured connection slots and available memory; continuous connections occupy slots. See ESPHome’s ready-made projects and its Bluetooth proxy documentation.

- 2.4GHz Dual Mode WiFi + Bluetooth Development Board
- Support LWIP protocol, Freertos
- SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
- Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
- ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
Check the exact board before buying. ESPHome’s ready-made generic Bluetooth proxy option is for plain ESP32 boards, not ESP32-C3 or other variants. A project built for one variant should not be assumed to work on another.
2. Replace some infrared remote functions
With an IR LED—and, if you want to learn signals from existing remotes, an IR receiver—an ESP32 can send or learn supported infrared commands for compatible equipment. This may cover a basic smart-remote function, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every remote or device. ESPHome labels its IR/RF proxy component experimental, so treat it as a DIY feature rather than a supported replacement for a commercial service.

- Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
3. Control a compatible air conditioner
ESPHome’s IR climate component can send commands to supported air-conditioner brands and models using an ESP32 and IR hardware. Infrared is one-way unless you add a separate way to observe the unit: without an IR receiver, the reported setting is the last command requested, not a confirmed reading from the air conditioner. If someone uses its own remote or the unit changes state independently, the controller may not know.

4. Build a local climate or status display
An ESP32 can be part of a sensor-driven climate controller or a display that shows local readings or status. ESPHome documents climate entities and display-based project patterns, but these are not a single, specified kit. Depending on the design, you may need a temperature sensor, display, relays, enclosure and a separate Home Assistant host. ESPHome’s climate documentation and project catalog are starting points; they do not establish one universal bill of materials or a direct replacement for a particular paid service.

What does the “$10” actually buy?
The price in the title is a provocative premise, not a verified current retail price or total build cost. No current board price or attributable savings figure is established here. Even if a board costs about that much where you shop, that would cover only the controller—not necessarily the hardware or work needed for any of these projects.
- Potential extra parts: USB power, IR LED and receiver, driver components, sensor, display, relays and enclosure, depending on the project.
- Potential host: Home Assistant may need to run on separate hardware if you do not already have a compatible host.
- Setup and upkeep: You will configure firmware, connect devices to a local network, set up integrations and maintain the installation. Espressif describes provisioning as preparing a device to connect securely to a platform or cloud; connected-device setup is part of the project, not an automatic step. See Espressif’s provisioning documentation.
- Electrical safety: Requirements depend on the build, especially where relays or mains-powered equipment are involved. Use components and wiring appropriate to the specific design.
To estimate whether a project saves money, compare its complete hardware and power costs, plus the time and maintenance you accept, with the price and functions of the service you would otherwise keep. The documentation does not supply a general savings number.

Choose by function, not by subscription count
Before building, identify the feature you want and verify that your existing device and software support it:

- Confirm that the device uses BLE or compatible IR signals, as applicable, and that the target is supported by the relevant ESPHome component and Home Assistant integration.
- Check the ESP32 variant against the project or installer requirements; the generic ready-made Bluetooth proxy, for example, is not for every ESP32 variant.
- List all required parts and any separate Home Assistant hardware before comparing costs.
- Decide whether local control and hands-on maintenance suit your needs. A DIY project can supply a function without reproducing every feature, support arrangement or convenience of a paid service.
These projects are not evidence that an ESP32 replaces Spotify, Netflix, a security-camera cloud plan or any other named subscription. An ESP32 is not a general streaming-service replacement, and the documented projects do not establish that a particular paid plan can be canceled.
