4 Motherboard Features You May Be Ignoring: Memory Profiles, Fan Control, BIOS Flashback and M.2

Memory profiles, fan control, BIOS Flashback and M.2 sockets are easy to overlook. Here is what to check on your own board and why the manual matters.

Most people install a PC, see Windows boot, and never open the BIOS again. That leaves four things on the board worth checking: the memory profile (XMP or EXPO), fan control, BIOS Flashback, and M.2 storage sockets. None of them is guaranteed on every board, and each depends on your exact model, CPU, RAM and firmware, so treat this as an inspection list for your own hardware, not a promise.

Before you change anything

Find your exact board name and revision (printed on the PCB, and shown in the BIOS or system information). Then open its manual and the manufacturer’s support page. The examples below come from current manufacturer product pages (MSI, ASRock and Gigabyte, checked October 2026). They show what a feature looks like on those specific boards and are not a survey of all motherboards. A feature name also does not prove identical behavior between brands.

1. Memory profiles: XMP and EXPO

A memory profile is a preset of speed and timing settings stored on the RAM kit that the BIOS can apply in one step. Intel-oriented kits typically use XMP; AMD-oriented kits typically use EXPO. Support varies by board: MSI lists EXPO and A-XMP for its B850M Gaming Pro WiFi6E, and ASRock lists XMP and EXPO support for its B850M Pro-A.

What to check

  • Is the profile actually on? Do not assume the speed printed on the RAM box is what you are running. Open the BIOS memory settings, look for an XMP/EXPO (or board-specific) option, and compare the reported memory speed with your kit’s rated speed.
  • Which profile does your kit carry? Match the profile type to what your board and CPU support.
  • Is your combination supported? Support depends on the board, CPU, memory kit and how many modules you install. The board’s memory support list (QVL) in the manual or support page is the place to look.
  • Is it stable? After enabling a profile, run your usual heavy workloads or a memory test. If you see crashes, boot loops or errors, drop to a lower speed or revert to defaults.

2. Fan control

Look at how many fan headers your board has and what the BIOS lets you do with them. Gigabyte, for instance, describes Smart Fan 6 on its A620M-H Rev. 2.0. The number and type of headers and the available controls differ by board, so the manual’s header diagram and the BIOS fan menu are the authoritative sources.

  • Confirm that your case fans and CPU cooler are plugged into headers suited to them, as labeled in the manual.
  • Open the BIOS fan section and see whether you can adjust curves or behavior, and which sensor each header follows.
  • Change one setting at a time and watch temperatures under load, so you can undo anything that makes cooling worse.

3. BIOS Flashback

Some boards offer a BIOS Flashback feature, which is aimed at firmware updating workflows; ASRock lists it for the B850M Pro-A. It is not universal, and the details are manufacturer-specific: the exact USB port, how the file must be named and prepared, the button procedure, and the conditions under which it works. Because of that, there is no generic step list here that would be safe on every board.

  • Check your board’s specifications for Flashback (or the brand’s equivalent name) before you rely on it.
  • Read the manual’s firmware update section in full, and download the BIOS file only from your exact model’s support page, matching the hardware revision.
  • Follow that board’s documented procedure exactly, and do not interrupt it.

4. M.2 storage sockets

M.2 sockets can host NVMe SSDs, but count, PCIe generation and lane connections differ. ASRock lists one PCIe Gen5 and two PCIe Gen4 M.2 sockets for the B850M Pro-A, and notes that slot availability may vary by CPU.

  • Comprehensive Connectivity: WIFI 6, PCIe 4.0, 2x M.2 Slots, 1GbE LAN, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C

What to check

  • How many sockets are free and what generation each one runs at.
  • Lane sharing. Look for the manual’s storage or bandwidth table. Using one socket can disable a SATA port or share lanes with another slot.
  • CPU dependence. Some sockets depend on which processor is installed.
  • Size and cooling. Confirm supported drive lengths and whether the socket has a heatsink or mounting provision.

If a socket is free and compatible, adding an M.2 NVMe SSD is a reasonable optional upgrade for extra storage. It is not a universal recommendation; buy only after the checks above.
