These are reasons to wait, not proof that Muse has misused every user’s data.
1. Public Instagram photos were treated as usable references
Meta’s July 2026 announcement of Muse Image described a feature that let users reference public Instagram accounts when generating images. Public visibility is not the same as consent to use someone’s likeness as an image-generation reference. The feature drew criticism, including from SAG-AFTRA, which said, as reported by the Associated Press, “With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise.” Associated Press report

Meta later edited its announcement to say, “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.” Meta’s Muse Image announcement That rollback matters: the concern is not that every public Instagram photo was trained on, which the available reporting does not establish, but that the feature initially enabled reference generation from public accounts and was withdrawn after backlash.
2. Privacy assurances still require trust in Meta
Meta markets Muse as safe, secure and private, and says users can review proposed actions before emails or purchases. Meta’s Muse privacy claims Meta’s account of Muse actions Those are product assurances, not independent guarantees that every use will feel appropriate for sensitive conversations, images or connected accounts.

Meta’s own safety explanation acknowledges that Muse connects to Meta apps and third-party systems, can make mistakes, and faces prompt-injection risks. Meta’s Muse safety explanation Separately, Axios reported that concerns about bystanders captured by Ray-Ban glasses remained unresolved, and described tentative use of Muse in light of Meta’s privacy track record. Axios report This supports a trust objection—not a claim about an undisclosed data practice. If you would not trust Meta with a particular conversation or account connection, a general privacy promise may not be enough.
3. An AI that can act creates higher stakes than one that only replies
Muse is not just a chatbot. Meta says it can connect to services and propose actions such as sending email or making purchases, with the user able to review and approve them. Meta’s account of Muse actions Approval gates are useful, but they do not remove the need to check what the agent intends to do.

When an agent can interact with apps and third-party services, a mistaken interpretation or malicious instruction can have consequences beyond an incorrect answer. Meta specifically identifies prompt injection as a risk in connected systems. Meta’s Muse safety explanation The practical question is whether you are comfortable granting the relevant connector access and inspecting each proposed action before it goes through.

4. Muse’s features and availability are still shifting
Muse Image has been rolling out in stages across the Meta AI app and selected Instagram and WhatsApp surfaces and regions. Meta’s Muse Video announcement described video as a preview or work in development, rather than a fully released feature. That pace of change makes it harder to rely on a stable feature set or assume the same controls are available everywhere. If predictable behavior, settled consent controls or broad availability matter to you, waiting is a reasonable choice.
