Google Messages does not automatically share your calendar or broadcast your schedule. But message previews, profile sharing, RCS read receipts and typing indicators, and deliberate location sharing can reveal different clues. Adjust each setting according to what you want others to see.
What Google Messages can—and cannot—reveal
These controls address separate kinds of exposure: what someone nearby can read on your phone, what profile details a Messages contact can see, which interaction signals a correspondent receives, and whether you choose to share location. Repeated response patterns may let someone infer habits, but that is an inference—not a feature that publishes your schedule.

Hide message previews on your lock screen
A preview can expose the actual text of a message to anyone who can see your locked phone. Android lets you hide sensitive notification content or turn off lock-screen notifications; the precise labels and options vary by device and Android version.

- Open Settings on your Android phone.
- Go to Notifications and find Notifications on lock screen or a similarly named control.
- Choose an option that hides sensitive content, or disable lock-screen notifications if you do not want them displayed at all.
If the path differs, search Settings for “lock screen notifications.” Some devices also offer app-specific notification controls. Google’s Android notification instructions note that settings vary across devices.

Choose who can see your Messages profile
Google Messages has a profile-sharing setting for your Google Account profile name and picture. Google says profile sharing does not make your profile public; it applies after you message another Google Messages user. It is not a setting for sharing your email address.
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Your profile.
- Choose People you message, Only your contacts, or No one.
Google says your phone number is used to verify your account and help other Messages users connect with you; in this profile-sharing context, it is not shown in other Google apps. See Google’s profile-sharing guidance.

Decide whether to keep RCS read receipts and typing indicators
Read receipts and typing indicators are RCS features, not ordinary schedule-sharing controls. They can tell a correspondent limited information about interaction with a message. Google’s current guidance says turning RCS chats off also turns off both indicators, so this is a broader feature tradeoff rather than a single-purpose privacy switch.
- In Google Messages, tap your profile picture and open Messages settings.
- Tap RCS chats; some versions may use the label Chat features.
- Review the available RCS controls. If you turn RCS chats off, read receipts and typing indicators turn off as well.
With RCS disabled, you give up RCS functionality. Availability and behavior can depend on region, carrier, and the other person’s messaging app, so conversations may not all work the same way. Google explains the relationship between the RCS setting and indicators in its guide to RCS chat security.

Keep location sharing deliberate
Google says it collects location when you choose to share your location in Messages. That is different from evidence that the app continuously broadcasts your whereabouts. If you do not want Messages to have location access, remove its location permission in Android’s app settings; menu labels vary by phone.
Open Android Settings, find Google Messages under Apps, open Permissions, and change Location to Don’t allow. Without permission, location sharing through the app may not be available. Google describes the privacy and location controls in its Google Messages privacy overview.
