The right notepad replacement depends on whether you want to keep handwriting on a screen, write on real paper and sync a copy, or simply erase quick reminders. E-ink notebooks, smart notebooks, smart pens and reusable LCD pads each solve a different part of the problem; only the first three are designed to preserve notes digitally.
Which notepad replacement fits your desk?
| Option | Where you write | How you keep notes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-ink writing tablet | On the device screen with a stylus | Digital notebooks, with storage and sharing features that vary by model | Handwriting you want to organize and revisit without paper |
| Paper-based smart notebook | On real paper | A companion app captures and syncs handwriting | The familiar paper habit plus a digital copy |
| Smart pen | On compatible paper | The pen sends captured writing to a companion app | Keeping a preferred paper notebook while digitizing notes |
| LCD writing tablet | On a reusable screen | Usually best treated as temporary marks, not a searchable archive | Quick lists, reminders and rough sketches |
Before choosing, consider how you will retrieve notes, whether they export to tools you already use, the writing feel, device and app compatibility, charging, and ongoing costs such as paper or refills. Features, prices and availability can change by model and market.
1. E-ink writing tablet: a digital notebook for handwriting
An e-ink tablet is the closest digital substitute for a dedicated paper notebook: you write on the screen with a stylus, then use the device’s software to organize, store or share notes. The Independent’s 18 December 2025 digital-notebook guide describes features such as cloud storage, page templates and quick sharing, and considers stylus, display, interface, battery life and smart features in its reviews.
There is no universal best choice. Compare the writing feel and display, how quickly you can find and export notes, how well the device works with your phone or computer, and whether its battery and full cost suit your routine. The Independent’s lineup includes the reMarkable 2, Kindle Scribe, Kobo Libra Colour, reMarkable Paper Pro Move and Boox Tab X C; their availability and capabilities should be checked for your region and exact model.

2. Paper-based smart notebook: keep the paper, add a digital copy
A smart notebook combines physical pages with electronic capture. Huion says its Huion Note has standard A5 dimensions, 50 replaceable paper pages and a companion-app workflow that syncs writing to a phone as an electronic document. The manufacturer also says it can store up to 50 pages offline before syncing, share notes as PDFs, replay strokes, and use its bundled panel as a PC-connected pen tablet. These are Huion’s stated features, not independent test results.

You still depend on the companion app for syncing, so check its current compatibility with your phone or computer and consider how you will manage replacement paper. Huion lists Bluetooth 5.0 and further compatibility details on its product page.
3. Smart pen: digitize handwriting without changing notebooks
A smart pen records handwriting as you write on paper and transfers it to an app. WIRED’s digital-notebook guide describes the Neo Smartpen M1+ as working with regular paper and logging notes in a companion app; the writer also reports using it with notebooks and planners. That does not mean every smart pen works with any paper.

Check the particular pen’s supported paper, app and device requirements before committing. Some systems use special dot-paper refills, as noted in a smart-notebook and smart-pen comparison. Unlike an e-ink tablet, a smart pen does not eliminate the paper notebook: it changes how you capture and transfer what you write. WIRED also covers the Moleskine Smart Writing Set, while noting that its reviewer had not yet tested the current version.

An LCD writing pad can replace paper scraps for a short-lived to-do list, phone number or rough sketch. It is the simplest option when you mainly want to write, erase and start over. The available digital-notepad roundup includes LCD writing tablets but does not establish reliable model-by-model note retention, export or organization features.

Treat an LCD pad as a scratch surface, not as a searchable archive. Before choosing a model, confirm how its erase control works and whether it has a lock feature to prevent accidental clearing; do not assume that writing can be saved or synced.
When an AI meeting notebook makes more sense
If your “notepad” is mostly for recording discussions, a meeting-focused device may be more relevant than a basic writing tablet. iFLYTEK advertises the AINOTE Air 2 with voice-to-text, translation, paper-like writing, synchronized recording, smart tasks and summaries; its AINOTE global site describes the Air 2 and AINOTE 2 as combining e-ink writing with voice and handwriting conversion. These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified performance findings.

Voice features and related services can add complexity that a simple handwritten reminder does not need.
