The current RTINGS roundup names four cable modem-router combos, not five: the ARRIS SURFboard G54, G36, G20, and G18. The right choice depends first on whether your cable provider approves the exact model for your location and plan, then on your speed, Wi-Fi coverage, Ethernet, and phone-service needs. None of the roundup’s recommendations should be treated as universally compatible.
Which cable modem-router combo fits your needs?
These are four distinct options from RTINGS’ roundup, updated October 1, 2026. RTINGS says it buys products itself and tests them on a standardized platform; the performance descriptions below are its findings, not independent testing by this publication.

| Model | Best fit | Notable specifications and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| ARRIS SURFboard G54 | Premium features and multiple wired connections | DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 7, and one 10-gigabit Ethernet port plus four gigabit ports. RTINGS reports strong speed results, but less impressive range relative to its speed and a high price. ARRIS lists no digital voice capability. Its product page gives different plan-speed statements: up to 2.5 Gbps in feature text and up to 10 Gbps in its technical specifications; verify the service plan with the ISP rather than treating either as guaranteed household throughput. |
| ARRIS SURFboard G36 | Households that want more wired flexibility without needing a 10 Gbps connection | DOCSIS 3.1, AX3000 Wi-Fi 6, one 2.5-gigabit port, and four gigabit Ethernet ports. RTINGS reports weaker range than the G20. ARRIS lists no digital voice capability. |
| ARRIS SURFboard G20 | Mid-range service and households relying mostly on Wi-Fi | DOCSIS 3.1, AX3000 Wi-Fi 6, and two gigabit Ethernet ports. ARRIS lists cable plans up to 1 Gbps and no digital voice capability. RTINGS says it scores ahead of the G36 in speed, latency, and gaming, and distinguishes it for range; its limited two-port count is the main wired trade-off. |
| ARRIS SURFboard G18 | Basic use such as browsing, streaming, lighter downloads, and casual wireless gaming | RTINGS describes it as slower and shorter-range than the G20, with two LAN ports and a 1-gigabit WAN rating. Further comparable specifications are not stated in the reviewed material. |
ARRIS specifications above reflect manufacturer pages accessed October 7, 2026; RTINGS’ comparative performance descriptions are from its roundup. These are model distinctions, not guarantees of speed or coverage in a particular home.

1. Confirm provider and plan approval
Before buying, check the exact model number against your cable ISP’s approved-device list and confirm that it is accepted for your service address and speed tier. Broad statements that a model works with major providers do not establish availability in every region or plan. Approval and plan support can change, so verify them directly with the provider.
#1 Best Overall

- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- MULTI-GIG DOCSIS 3.1 SPEEDS: Get Gigabit+ cable download speeds on today's fastest plans, with headroom for the upgrades ahead. Real-world speeds depend on your plan and ISP network.
- WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
- WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
2. Match modem capability to the service you pay for
All four ARRIS picks are described as DOCSIS 3.1 devices in the supplied product information, but that alone does not establish that a particular ISP supports the model at your plan speed. Treat manufacturer speed figures as product or plan claims, not promises of end-to-end throughput: the G54 page, for example, gives two different maximum-plan statements. Ask the provider what speed tier it supports for the exact model.
3. Decide how many wired devices you need
Count devices that benefit from Ethernet, such as a desktop computer, game console, network storage device, or access point. The G20 and G18 have two LAN ports according to the roundup; the G36 adds a 2.5-gigabit port and four gigabit ports, and the G54 lists a 10-gigabit port plus four gigabit ports. If your wired-device count exceeds the available ports, you may need additional networking equipment.
Rank #2
- CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps and Cox plans up to 500Mbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- GET THE FULL SPEED OF PLANS UP TO 800 MBPS: DOCSIS 3.0 delivers plenty of speed for HD and 4K streaming, online gaming, and video calls across your home. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
- AC1900 WIFI COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AC1900 WiFi covering up to 1,800 sq ft and Beamforming+ for stronger signal to mobile devices.
4. Prioritize real coverage needs over Wi-Fi labels
The G54 is the Wi-Fi 7 option among these four; the G20 and G36 are AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 models. A newer Wi-Fi generation or higher theoretical rate does not by itself mean better coverage in your home. Consider the home’s layout, the locations of the modem and clients, and whether your devices support the Wi-Fi generation you would be paying for. RTINGS’ observations distinguish the G20’s range from the G36’s and note that the G54’s range is less impressive relative to its speed.

The ARRIS pages for the G20, G36, and G54 state that those models do not provide digital voice capability. If you subscribe to cable telephone service, ask the ISP whether the combo can support your service or whether you need a separate voice-capable modem or gateway. Do not assume that internet compatibility also means phone compatibility.

- Fast, Reliable Connection: Enjoy high-speed streaming, gaming, and browsing with a trusted brand used in over 260 million homes.
- Advanced Modem Tech: Uses DOCSIS 3.1 for faster speeds, better security, and smoother gaming.
- Strong Wi-Fi 6 Coverage: Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 delivers faster, wider wireless performance for your whole home.

When a separate modem and router may be better
A combo replaces two devices with one, which can simplify installation and reduce equipment clutter. The trade-off is less flexibility: if you later want to upgrade Wi-Fi without changing the cable modem, or replace the modem without replacing the router, separate devices make that easier. RTINGS also frames combos as a convenient alternative to an ISP gateway, while noting their reduced flexibility compared with separate modem and router equipment.
There is another model you may encounter in searches: NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S. It is not one of the four picks in RTINGS’ current roundup. NETGEAR describes it as a DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 6 combo and lists compatibility with Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox at specified tiers, but says it is not compatible with bundled cable voice service or fiber. Treat it as a separate candidate, not a fifth roundup recommendation, and verify its exact plan and provider support before purchase.
