4 Built-In Windows 11 Tools for Cleanup and PC Maintenance

Windows 11 has built-in tools for cleanup, startup management, drive maintenance and device-health checks—but each addresses a specific problem, not every cause of a slow PC.

Windows 11 includes tools for clearing selected files, checking startup and resource use, maintaining drives, and spotting a few common device-health issues. They can help when a particular problem—such as low disk space or too many apps launching at sign-in—is slowing a PC. They are not universal speed boosters: Microsoft lists several possible causes of slow performance, including outdated software and hardware that no longer meets modern needs, and older PCs may see little improvement from software steps.

Which built-in tool should you use?

Tool Best suited to What it does Check before acting
Storage Sense Low disk space Removes selected temporary files and Recycle Bin items automatically or on demand. Review file types and whether Downloads or cloud files are included.
Task Manager Unwanted startup activity or heavy resource use Shows processes and resource use; lets you manage startup apps and close apps you recognize. Disable only startup apps you recognize and do not need at sign-in.
Optimize Drives Routine drive maintenance Defragments HDDs and trims SSDs as appropriate. Windows already schedules optimization; do not repeatedly defragment an SSD.
Device performance & health A quick check for selected device issues Reports on storage capacity, battery life on battery-powered devices, apps and software, and the Windows Time service. It is a health report, not a one-click performance fix.

1. Use Storage Sense to clear selected files

Storage Sense can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Its default settings run when the system drive is low on space. By default, it leaves Downloads and OneDrive or other cloud content alone unless you configure those options. It works on the system drive, usually C:; for other drives, use Windows’ storage settings for those drives.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
  2. Check the cleanup options before turning on or changing automatic cleanup, especially the settings for Downloads and cloud content.
  3. To clean temporary files manually, open the temporary-files list, review the file types selected, and remove only what you intend to delete.

This is useful when limited free space is the issue; it does not identify unrelated reasons a PC might feel slow.

2. Use Task Manager to find startup and resource demands

Task Manager shows which processes are using system resources, and it provides a way to close apps you are not using. Its Startup apps view lists startup impact labels: Low, Medium, High, Not Measured, or None. Microsoft says these labels can help troubleshoot startup performance; they are indicators to consider, not a command to disable every app marked High.

  1. Right-click Start and choose Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps to review what runs when you sign in and its impact label.
  3. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at sign-in. You can also manage startup apps through Settings.
  4. Use Task Manager’s process and resource information to identify apps you recognize that are consuming resources. Close an app only if you are not using it and can safely stop it.

Do not turn off unfamiliar Windows components simply because they appear in a list. If closing unused apps does not help, Microsoft also recommends restarting the PC and checking other possible causes.

3. Let Optimize Drives handle HDDs and SSDs differently

Windows automatically optimizes data drives, with a weekly schedule by default. The built-in Defragment and Optimize Drives tool lets you inspect drive status and adjust that schedule. “Optimize” covers different operations depending on the drive:

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  • HDD: Windows can analyze and defragment the drive.
  • SSD: Windows uses trim, which tells the drive where it can perform cleanup work.

Open Start, search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, and select the result to inspect the schedule or drive status. Because Windows already schedules optimization, repeated manual defragmentation is not appropriate for an SSD.

4. Check Device performance & health in Windows Security

The Windows Security app’s Device performance & health page checks selected areas: storage capacity, battery life on devices with batteries, apps and software, and the Windows Time service. If it finds an issue, it may show recommendations. Treat it as a focused health check, not a promise that Windows can automatically make the whole PC faster.

If these tools do not resolve the slowdown

A clean health report or more free space does not rule out other causes. Microsoft identifies limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets modern needs among possible reasons for slow performance. Apps, malware, and other system conditions may also need attention. Work through the relevant troubleshooting steps rather than installing a general-purpose optimizer on the assumption that one tool can fix every cause.
