Before you pull out, connect and test Android Auto while parked, then set up your destinations, voice controls and on-screen shortcuts. These four habits make it easier to use navigation, messages and media without handling your phone on the road.
1. Set up and test Android Auto before you leave
Check that your car and phone support Android Auto, then connect while the car is parked and its infotainment system is on. Google supports wired USB connections and wireless connections; for a first wireless setup, pair the phone over Bluetooth and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services turned on while setup completes. Follow the steps for your vehicle and phone, since compatibility and menus can vary.

Open Android Auto and confirm that the connection works before you start driving. Google’s guidance is to allow time for setup while the vehicle is in Park: “Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.” Google’s Android Auto setup instructions cover the connection process.

Save a home address and other likely stops in your navigation app before departure. In Android Auto, Google Maps can also show recent places, saved locations and categories such as gas stations and coffee shops. For a stop you have not saved, use a voice command such as “Navigate to [location]” or “Directions to [shop name].” You can also say “Take me home.”

Google Maps navigation can provide voice guidance, estimated arrival times, live traffic and lane guidance, depending on the app, vehicle display and conditions. If you need to type a destination using the car’s screen, do it only when the car is in Park. Google documents these options in its turn-by-turn navigation guide.
For eligible electric vehicles
Google Maps can estimate battery use for a trip and suggest charging stops when a compatible EV has been added to Maps and confirmed in Android Auto. The feature is available only for select countries and EV models, and real-world consumption can differ from the estimate because of traffic, weather and other conditions.

3. Handle calls and messages with voice
Start the voice assistant with “Hey Google,” the microphone button on the screen, or your car’s press-and-hold steering-wheel voice button. Wait for the tone before speaking. Depending on the assistant version and what is available in your car, you can ask for directions, play music, make calls, or hear and send messages.

For a message reply, the assistant can read back the proposed message and ask you to confirm before sending. That gives you a chance to catch a dictation mistake without typing on the display. Google’s instructions explain sending and receiving messages and using Gemini or Google Assistant in Android Auto. The assistant name and rollout can vary as Google transitions between services.

4. Turn on quick controls for navigation and media
Check Android Auto’s settings before you go: enable “Show quick controls for apps” if the option is available. Google says this can keep media controls and navigation directions visible while another app is open full-screen, reducing the need to switch screens for common trip tasks. The layout and available controls depend on the car’s display and software. See Google’s guide to Android Auto screens and apps.
Quick Recap
Before the trip: a quick checklist
- Confirm phone and vehicle compatibility, and test the wired or wireless connection while parked.
- Save important destinations and use voice navigation once underway; use the car display’s keyboard only in Park.
- Use voice playback and replies for messages instead of reaching for the phone.
- Check whether quick controls are available and enabled on your car’s display.
