Android Auto’s most useful settings to turn off are the ones that interrupt you or do something you did not ask for: automatic music playback, the message chime, message notifications on the car display, and starting Android Auto while your phone is locked. They are optional preferences, not universal fixes; keep the alerts or automatic behavior you rely on.
Find Android Auto settings on your phone
Open your phone’s Settings and search for Android Auto. On some phones, Google also lists it under Settings > Connected devices; available features and menu wording can vary with the Android version and phone maker. Google’s Android Auto setup instructions cover connection and compatibility basics, while this Android Central settings guide describes the four behavior controls below. If the labels or paths do not match, use Settings search rather than assuming the control is missing.

Four settings you may want to disable
1. Start music automatically
Turn off Start music automatically (or the similarly named startup control) if you would rather choose when audio begins after connecting. Android Central places it in Android Auto’s startup settings. The result can depend on the media app and handset, so disabling this setting is not a guarantee that every app will behave identically.

2. Play the message chime
Disable Play message chime under Android Auto’s messaging settings if the audible alert is what bothers you. This controls the sound; it is separate from whether message notifications appear on the car display.

3. Show message notifications
Disable Show message notifications if you do not want message alerts displayed in Android Auto. You can turn off this visual notification while leaving the chime setting on, or mute the chime while keeping notifications visible. If you depend on message alerts, leave the display control enabled.
4. Start Android Auto while locked
Turn off Start Android Auto while locked if you do not want Android Auto to launch automatically when your phone is locked. Android Central describes this as a workaround for that behavior, not a control guaranteed to appear on every device. Its guide reports that Bluetooth may still connect for calls and Android Auto can be started later; check your own phone and car behavior rather than treating that outcome as universal.

Keep connection settings on during setup
Do not switch off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Location Services as a blanket attempt to improve Android Auto. Google’s Android Auto Help advises: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.” For wireless Android Auto, the phone and car must support wireless connection; the first connection pairs them over Bluetooth, with the listed phone services enabled during setup.
Wired Android Auto uses a USB cable: connect the phone to the vehicle, then follow the on-screen instructions. Phone and vehicle compatibility still matters. A USB data cable is relevant only if you use the wired method; it is not a general remedy for every Android Auto issue. See Google’s setup and compatibility instructions for the connection steps.

| Connection mode | What setup requires | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless | Initial pairing over Bluetooth; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup, as Google advises. | The phone and vehicle must support wireless Android Auto. Google’s setup page does not establish that wireless is faster or more reliable than wired. |
| Wired | Connect the phone and vehicle with a USB cable and follow the on-screen instructions. | Confirm that both the phone and vehicle are compatible. A cable is needed for this mode, not for wireless setup. |
Do not disable battery optimization as a blanket fix
Turning off battery optimization is not one of these four convenience adjustments. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on by default. On Pixel phones, allowing an app to run more in the background can use more battery, while optimization can reduce performance or delay notifications. Any app-specific change should be a deliberate, device-specific troubleshooting experiment with that trade-off in mind; some instructions on Google’s Pixel battery settings page apply only to Android 14 and later.
