There was no objectively best AI engineer credential in 2021: the right choice depended on your target cloud platform, experience, and whether you wanted a proctored exam or a course-based certificate. The four options below preserve the title’s 2021 frame while distinguishing historical exam details from current status: Microsoft’s exam changed in 2021, AWS’s Machine Learning Specialty exam retired in 2026, and IBM’s current program should not be mistaken for its 2021 curriculum.
How to choose among AI engineer credentials
Compare each option across four practical questions: which platform or learning path it serves, what work it covers, what experience it assumes, and whether it is an exam-based certification or a course-series certificate. These credentials are not a universal ranking, and the available official descriptions do not establish that any one guarantees employment, a salary increase, or broad employer recognition.

- Platform: Azure, Google Cloud, AWS, or a broader course curriculum.
- Work covered: cloud AI application implementation, machine-learning engineering, an AWS ML lifecycle, or coursework and projects.
- Experience: Google’s launch announcement recommended substantial industry and Google Cloud experience; the sources do not support a consistent beginner-to-advanced ranking across all four.
- Format and status: distinguish a proctored vendor exam from a course-based certificate, and check whether an exam or curriculum remains current.
The four options
| Credential | Platform or scope | Format and status |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate | Azure AI services and solution implementation, including language, speech, vision, and conversational AI | Vendor certification exam; AI-100 was replaced by AI-102 in 2021 |
| Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer | Machine-learning engineering lifecycle on Google Cloud | Vendor certification exam; current scope is described in Google’s exam guide |
| AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty | AWS machine-learning solution lifecycle | Historical vendor certification; exam retired March 31, 2026 |
| IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate | Coursework and projects spanning machine learning and deep learning | 13-course career certificate on Coursera; not a proctored vendor certification exam |
Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate
Microsoft’s May 2020 description presented the credential as covering cognitive services, machine learning, and knowledge mining for AI solutions involving natural language processing, speech, computer vision, and conversational AI. At that time, candidates were expected to pass AI-100. Microsoft’s 2020 description is useful for understanding that earlier framing.

On February 23, 2021, Microsoft made AI-102: Designing and Implementing a Microsoft Azure AI Solution the replacement for AI-100. Microsoft said the skills focus shifted toward AI software engineering and away from solution architecture. That is a material change when reading a list written for 2021; see Microsoft’s 2021 transition announcement.
#1 Best Overall
Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer
Google’s launch announcement described a two-hour exam covering problem framing, model development, ML solution architecture, pipeline automation and orchestration, data preparation and processing, and monitoring, optimization, and maintenance. Google recommended at least three years of industry experience, including one year designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. Those are launch-era details, not a claim that the current exam has identical timing or recommendations. Google’s launch announcement documents that original description.
For the current scope, Google’s exam guide describes a broad ML engineering lifecycle that includes responsible AI and collaboration. It also says the exam does not directly assess coding skill. This credential makes most sense for someone targeting Google Cloud ML engineering, rather than as a platform-neutral proof of programming ability.
Rank #2
AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty
AWS’s exam guide describes a credential for people in AI/ML development or data science roles, covering data engineering, exploratory data analysis, modeling, and ML implementation and operations. The exam is no longer schedulable: AWS says it retired on March 31, 2026. It belongs in a 2021 comparison as a historical option, not as a current exam recommendation. Consult the AWS certification page for status and its exam guide for the documented scope.
AWS identifies Machine Learning Engineer Associate as a related credential. Because exam language and availability can change, check AWS’s current certification information before choosing a successor; the historical Specialty guide should not be treated as a guide to a different exam.
IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate
Coursera’s current listing describes an intermediate, 13-course career credential offered by IBM, with practical projects and coverage of machine learning, deep learning, Python, PyTorch, Keras, and TensorFlow. Its format differs from the cloud-vendor credentials: it is a course-series certificate, not a proctored certification exam. The current listing includes generative AI content, but that should not be projected backward onto the 2021 curriculum. See the IBM program page on Coursera for its present description.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Microsoft path if your work is centered on implementing AI solutions with Azure services; pay attention to the AI-100-to-AI-102 transition when interpreting older material.
- Choose Google Cloud’s credential if you want an exam focused on the ML engineering lifecycle on Google Cloud and your experience fits the preparation Google recommended at launch.
- Do not plan to take AWS Machine Learning – Specialty now. The exam is retired. Review AWS’s current related credentials if you want an AWS-specific exam instead.
- Choose IBM’s program if you want structured, project-based coursework across ML and deep learning rather than a proctored cloud-vendor exam.
Before paying or scheduling, verify the current exam or curriculum page for your region and date. A credential’s subject and format are more useful selection criteria than an unsupported claim that one is universally “best.”
