The filament came out nearly clean, with only a faint dark ring. That was an interesting result—not evidence that scheduled cold pulls prevent clogs or that every printer needs them.
Why I tried a cold pull when nothing seemed wrong
I had been using the P2S for about six months and had not run into printing problems beyond occasional bed-adhesion trouble. Cleaning the bed with hot water and soap addressed that. I had read about owners doing cold pulls regularly and wondered whether several kilos of PLA had left anything behind in the nozzle.

That curiosity was the reason for the attempt; I did not have a clog to fix. A cold pull is a maintenance technique intended to lift debris from the hotend: filament is softened, allowed to cool, and then withdrawn so residue may come out with it.

I used the P2S’s “Nozzle Cold Pull Maintenance” option in the Toolbox menu. The printer centered the toolhead and prompted me to remove the hotend front cover and PTFE tube, then feed filament through the tube opening. I used PLA, extruded roughly 15 cm from a 30 cm piece, and waited for the nozzle to cool to 85°C before slowly pulling the filament out.

- CLEAN YOUR 3D PRINTER with 3D Clean (Dyna Purge), a non-chemical, non-abrasive thermoplastic compound that's safe for both the operator and the printer.
- FOR HOTEND CLOGS & MAINTENANCE: 3D Clean does the heavy lifting by cleaning that pesky clogged printer nozzle and performing routine maintenance (recommended minimum every 3 months or 0.5kg of material, whichever comes first).
- IMPROVE PRINT QUALITY: Removes residue from PLA, PETG, ABS and other filaments by adhering to byproduct and debris left behind in the extruder, resulting in smoother, more accurate models.
- PREVENTS COLOR BLEED when switching between colors and materials. Stop contaminating your valuable filaments and ruining prints! Just run a couple of inches of 3D Clean through your printer and you're ready to transition.
- COMES IN 8-INCH SEGMENTS: 3D Clean is made by 3D Fuel, a small American manufacturing company proud to offer the world's best 3D filaments alongside the best customer service.
Those are details of my P2S procedure, not universal settings. The steps and temperature may differ by printer, hotend, and filament. Follow the instructions for your specific machine rather than treating this account as a how-to for every model.
A nozzle is hot enough to cause serious burns. The procedure involves working near it, so take the manufacturer’s safety precautions; the source account advises heat-proof gloves.

What came out—and what it did not prove
The pulled filament looked almost clean. I could just make out a small ring of black material. I wondered whether it might be the start of a slow clog, but the result could not establish that it was one.

This was one pull on one printer using PLA, not a controlled comparison. It does not show that routine pulls prevent clogs, how often they should be done, or whether the result would be the same with another nozzle size or filament. Those variables can matter, but this experience does not measure their effects.

Do you need to cold-pull regularly?
My experience did not persuade me to repeat the procedure twice a year. At my printing rate and with the filament I used, I did not see a reason to make cold pulls a calendar-based task. That is a personal takeaway, not a maintenance interval that applies to other printers or materials.
A guided maintenance option can make a procedure easier to follow, but it does not by itself establish that the procedure is necessary. If your printer is extruding normally, this anecdote offers little reason to perform a pull just to look for debris. If you do have extrusion symptoms, consult the printer maker’s guidance for the right diagnostic and clearing steps.

When a cold pull is only one possible response
Cold pulls and needles are commonly used approaches for clearing extrusion problems; replacing a nozzle is another option. The right response depends on the symptoms and the printer’s instructions. Nozzle wear also accumulates over time, and some filaments can wear nozzles faster, but this account does not quantify wear or compare nozzle types.
Quick Recap
- No apparent extrusion issue: My nearly clean pull did not make routine preventive pulls seem worthwhile at my usage level.
- Extrusion trouble: Use the procedure and troubleshooting guidance for your exact printer and compatible filament; do not assume my P2S temperature or steps transfer.
- Persistent problems or suspected wear: A pull is not the only option; the manufacturer may direct you to another clearing method or nozzle replacement.
