Colorlib’s September 28, 2026 roundup lists 35 free tab-related examples, but they are not 35 interchangeable Bootstrap tab components. The list combines conventional tabs, responsive and CSS-based patterns, form-step wizards, and older CodePen examples. Choose by interaction and dependency first, then check accessibility, mobile behavior, version compatibility, and the license attached to the specific example.

What is included in the 35-example roundup?

The count is Colorlib’s inventory, published September 28, 2026—not an independent count or evaluation. Its 35 entries fall into four groups:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Group Count in Colorlib’s roundup Best understood as
New Colorlib tab components 12 Tab interface patterns for content such as settings, pricing, product details, dashboards, documentation, news categories, photo filters, and code samples.
uiCookies templates 8 Templates that include tab designs; inspect each template to identify its dependencies and terms.
Colorlib form wizards 19 Multi-step forms that organize sequential input into tab-like steps rather than independent content panels.
Older CodePen examples 3 Examples using Bootstrap tab markup; their dependency and version requirements may differ from the other groups.

Colorlib describes its own 12 components and form wizards as using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript rather than requiring Bootstrap JavaScript or jQuery. That is the publisher’s description, not an independent compatibility or behavior test. The roundup makes a different qualification for the CodePen entries: check their individual implementations and dependencies before adapting them. See Colorlib’s complete roundup and demos.

Choose tabs or a wizard based on the task

Use tabs for content users can visit in any order

Tabs suit related, parallel information when readers may switch freely—for example, a product’s description, specifications, and reviews. Each tab changes the visible panel, but completing one panel should not be a prerequisite for opening another.

Use a wizard for sequential input

If users need to enter information in an intended sequence, a form wizard is the better fit. A tab-like progress control can show steps, but do not imply that later steps are ordinary, independently accessible content if the workflow depends on earlier answers.

Avoid adding layers without a clear need

Nested tabs make it harder to understand where a control belongs and which panel it changes. Prefer a simpler hierarchy unless the content genuinely needs more than one level.

Compare examples by implementation, not screenshot

A demo’s appearance does not establish how it handles keyboard input, mobile widths, JavaScript failure, or integration with your site. Use these checks when shortlisting an entry:

  • Purpose: Determine whether it switches among parallel panels or guides users through sequential form steps.
  • Accessibility: Inspect the controls, selected state, relationship between each tab and panel, focus behavior, and keyboard movement. If changing a tab updates content elsewhere on the page, check whether that change is communicated accessibly.
  • Small screens: Look for horizontal scrolling, scroll controls, responsive reflow, a vertical-to-horizontal change, or conversion to an accordion. Colorlib says some examples address narrow screens in these ways; that is a publisher description, not a verified result for every demo.
  • Dependencies and fallback: Establish whether the example uses Bootstrap’s tab plugin, its own JavaScript, or CSS/native disclosure, and what remains usable if JavaScript does not run.
  • Integration: Check the expected Bootstrap version, data attributes, CSS selectors, global styles, and script interactions against your project.
  • License: Confirm the terms for the individual component or template before publishing or redistributing it.

Colorlib notes that five or more tab labels may not fit comfortably on a phone and describes several responsive approaches in its roundup. Treat those as approaches to inspect in the relevant demo, not as proof that every entry works at every viewport width.

Check keyboard and screen-reader behavior

Colorlib says its 12 new components follow the WAI-ARIA tabs pattern and recommends checking arrow-key movement. Do not rely on visual styling alone: interact with the demo using a keyboard and verify that users can identify the active tab, move between tabs, and reach the associated content. The roundup’s statement does not establish that each third-party entry follows the same pattern or that any particular demo passes an accessibility audit.

Bootstrap makes an important distinction: ARIA tab roles belong on a dynamic tab interface, not on ordinary site navigation merely styled to look like tabs. The Bootstrap v5.3 documentation states that navigation bars styled with .nav-tabs should not be given role="tablist", role="tab", or role="tabpanel". Read Bootstrap v5.3’s navs and tabs guidance.

Bootstrap 4 and 5 use different tab data attributes

For Bootstrap’s tab plugin, the version matters. Bootstrap 4 uses the data-toggle attribute; Bootstrap 5 uses data-bs-toggle. Bootstrap 5 no longer requires jQuery. Colorlib says its own components can appear alongside Bootstrap 4, 5, or 6 because they use their own markup and a small amount of vanilla JavaScript; treat that as a publisher claim rather than a guarantee that every snippet will integrate without CSS or script conflicts.

Bootstrap v5.2’s official dynamic example uses buttons with data-bs-toggle="tab" and data-bs-target, plus tab and panel relationships such as role, aria-controls, and aria-selected. When Bootstrap’s JavaScript is included, its documentation shows activation through data attributes without author-written initialization. It also documents JavaScript activation, fade effects, transitions, and events. See Bootstrap v5.2’s tab examples and plugin details.

Adapt and integrate a chosen example

  1. Open the specific demo and identify its group. Decide whether it is a content tab, a wizard, a template, or a Bootstrap-markup example. Do not infer dependencies from the roundup’s overall title.
  2. Inspect the source and license. Find the exact CSS, JavaScript, assets, and attribution terms for that item. Check whether it expects Bootstrap styles or scripts and which version’s attributes it uses.
  3. Rename labels and panels together. Keep every control connected to the panel it activates. Update IDs and references consistently, including the target relationship and accessibility attributes where used.
  4. Test the actual interaction. Use a keyboard as well as a pointer; check selected state, focus, panel visibility, and arrow-key behavior where the pattern calls for it. Test at narrow widths and with JavaScript unavailable or blocked.
  5. Check for style and script collisions. Compare the snippet’s selectors and global rules with your site. Colorlib recommends loading its snippet stylesheet after a framework stylesheet if global box-sizing or typography rules conflict; inspect the actual component rather than assuming order will resolve every conflict.

Licensing: terms differ by source

Colorlib says its snippets are available under CC BY 3.0 for personal and commercial projects if the credit link is retained. Do not extend that statement to every item in the 35-entry collection: Colorlib directs readers to check the individual uiCookies and CodePen source pages for their own licenses. The license for each specific asset—not the roundup’s overall “free” label—should determine how you may use it. Check the source roundup for its credit and licensing notes.
