“Can you build on the single snowflake in this week’s starter template to create a snowstorm?” That was CodePen’s December 2022 challenge. Its invitation remains a useful creative prompt: animate falling flakes, add depth, make a winter scene, or explore snowflake geometry.
CSS-Tricks issue 301, published December 20, 2022, is a historical roundup of snow-themed CodePen projects—not a step-by-step tutorial or a benchmark of competing implementations. The examples offer several distinct starting points for a browser-based winter effect.

Choose the effect you want to create
Light snowfall or a sense of depth
A sparse snowfall can feel calm and minimal. Other examples in the newsletter aim to create depth, making flakes feel as though they occupy different distances. These are different visual goals; the roundup does not establish that one approach performs better.

Straight descent or varied motion
Some examples explore flakes that travel along non-straight paths rather than simply dropping vertically. This is a way to make motion feel less uniform, without needing to turn the project into a complete scene.

Snow overlay or illustrated winter scene
The newsletter also points to a bookmarklet that applies snow over an existing website. That is an overlay concept; the challenge separately invites participants to build a winter scene. The source describes the bookmarklet’s effect but does not assess its security, privacy, or suitability for production use.
Use the challenge as a creative brief
CodePen’s December 2022 Week 1 Snow challenge suggests building a snowstorm from a single-flake starter, creating a winter scene, or exploring snowflake patterns. It names CSS, SVG, and JavaScript as possible routes and links to examples involving CSS animation, SVG or CSS snowflakes, and a Koch snowflake fractal.
