3 Real Programs You Can Build Entirely in Excel

Excel can act like a small application. Build a dependency-aware project schedule, an interactive worksheet game, or a transaction tracker with summaries and charts.

Excel can do more than store numbers: with formulas, worksheet features, and—when needed—VBA, a workbook can function as a focused program. Three practical examples are a project scheduling engine, an interactive game, and a personal finance tracker. Each is best suited to a specific job, and each has limits that matter when choosing how to build it.

1. A project scheduling engine

A schedule workbook can calculate task dates instead of merely displaying a static Gantt chart. Enter a project start date and each task’s working-day duration; Excel’s WORKDAY function can calculate a finish date while excluding weekends. Later task dates can then depend on earlier task results, so changing an upstream date can update the schedule. Parallel tasks can share a start date.

That basic pattern suits a small project with straightforward sequencing. The more relationships and calendar rules a schedule needs, the more intricate its formulas and logic become.

When dependencies get more complex

A September 21, 2026 article by Arol Wright in How-To Geek, surfaced through Yahoo Tech, describes ProjectEngine, an open-source Excel/VBA project. According to that article, it supports finish-to-start, start-to-start, and finish-to-finish dependencies; positive and negative lags; multiple predecessors; five- or six-day calendars; critical-path and float calculations; diagnostics; and what-if scenarios. The article says its developer does not position it as a replacement for Microsoft Project or Primavera P6. These are descriptions reported by that article, not independently verified specifications.

Choose a spreadsheet scheduler when the core need is dependency-driven dates and working-day calculations. A workbook can be useful for a focused schedule, but the examples described here do not establish equivalence to dedicated enterprise project-management systems.

2. An interactive game

A worksheet’s grid can become a game board: cells hold the board state, formulas check rules or update a score, and formatting makes the state visible. Turn-based games such as Minesweeper, Sudoku, tic-tac-toe, and Battleship fit this approach particularly well. Worksheet events or short VBA routines can respond to cell actions; VBA is an option for interaction, not a requirement for every game.

Turn-based versus real-time play

Turn-based play can wait for a player to make a move and then update the board. Real-time movement, such as Snake, needs repeated updates: the How-To Geek article describes using a loop, for example one driven by Application.OnTime or a yielding loop, and Application.OnKey to bind keys to macros. That adds timing and input-handling complexity beyond a grid that changes only after each turn.

Platform limits for VBA games

Microsoft says, “Although you can’t create, run, or edit VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macros in Excel for the web, you can open and edit a workbook that contains macros.” (Microsoft Support: Work with VBA macros in Excel for the web.) Microsoft also notes that macro-enabled workbooks can open in Excel for the web, but macros do not run in a browser window (Microsoft Support: Differences between using a workbook in the browser and in Excel). If macros drive the game, plan to use desktop Excel for that interaction rather than assuming it will work in a browser.

3. A personal finance tracker

A simple tracker starts with a transaction log: one row for each purchase or payment, with fields such as date, description, category, and amount. A separate budget sheet can summarize spending by category and month. SUMIFS formulas or a PivotTable can produce those totals; conditional formatting and charts can turn them into a dashboard.

Keep categories consistent

Totals are only useful if transactions use consistent labels. A data-validation drop-down for categories helps prevent the same kind of spending from being split across variations such as “Groceries” and “grocery.” This is a small setup choice that makes monthly comparisons more dependable.

Importing bank exports

Power Query can connect to external data and shape it—for example, by removing a column, changing a data type, or merging tables—before loading it into Excel for reports and charts. Microsoft describes it as a way to “import or connect to external data, and then shape your data” (Microsoft Support: About Power Query in Excel). Support varies by Excel version and across Windows, Mac, and the web, so check Microsoft’s current platform documentation before relying on a particular import workflow.

Which kind of Excel program fits your task?

Program Best fit Main Excel features Complexity or platform consideration
Project scheduler Task order, working days, and dependency-driven dates WORKDAY, date formulas, and linked task results Simple schedules are manageable; more dependency types, lags, calendars, and critical-path logic add complexity.
Interactive game A grid-based learning project, especially turn-based play Worksheet cells, formulas, formatting, events, and optional VBA Real-time movement needs repeated updates. VBA macros do not run in Excel for the web.
Finance tracker Recording transactions and summarizing monthly spending Transaction tables, SUMIFS or PivotTables, validation, formatting, charts, and optional Power Query Consistent categories matter; Power Query availability varies by platform and version.

The practical choice comes down to the problem’s logic, interaction and timing needs, any data-import workflow, and whether the Excel platform you use supports the required features. A workbook can be effective software for a bounded task without being a substitute for a dedicated enterprise scheduler or a polished commercial game.
