For AI and SaaS teams evaluating open-source billing in 2026, start with Lago for combined subscriptions, usage charges and prepaid credits; OpenMeter when event metering and usage controls are central; and Kill Bill when you need a customizable, self-hosted billing and payments foundation. These are capability-based fits drawn from each project’s documentation—not results of independent feature, security or performance testing.
How the three platforms differ
| Platform | Best-documented fit | License and delivery | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lago | Combining usage-based charges with subscriptions, prepaid credits, customer wallets, entitlements and invoices. | AGPLv3 open-source platform with self-hosting; Lago also describes managed cloud and premium capabilities. Its repository documents Docker Compose and links to deployment guides and Helm charts. Lago · GitHub repository | Review AGPLv3 implications and confirm which capabilities you need are available in the open-source edition rather than a premium offering. |
| OpenMeter | Event-based usage measurement, real-time aggregation, limits and entitlements for AI, API, SaaS and developer-tool products, with billing integrations. | Apache 2.0 project. OpenMeter joined Kong in September 2025; its managed offering is Konnect Metering & Billing. The repository identifies Kafka, ClickHouse and PostgreSQL among runtime components. OpenMeter · GitHub repository · Documentation | The official Helm chart is described as intended for development, not production. Validate your production architecture and decide which systems or teams handle payment collection, tax and accounting. |
| Kill Bill | Extensible billing and payment workflows with plugin integrations, custom business logic and infrastructure control. | Apache 2.0, self-hosted open-source core with plugin extensions. Kill Bill says it has been in production since 2010. Kill Bill · Features | Customization means you should assess implementation and operations needs. The available sources do not provide an independent estimate of setup effort. |

Choose by the work your billing stack must do
Subscriptions, usage and prepaid balances together
Lago is the clearest documented match if your pricing combines recurring subscriptions with metered usage, prepaid credits or customer wallets. It also describes entitlements and invoices. Before choosing it, map each required capability to the open-source or premium boundary and review what AGPLv3 means for your deployment and distribution model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Meter events and control usage
OpenMeter is a closer fit when the difficult part is capturing product events, aggregating usage in real time, and applying limits or entitlements. Its documentation describes billing integrations, including Stripe. Treat metering and billing responsibilities as separate design questions: identify which component rates usage, generates invoices, collects payment and owns tax and accounting workflows.

Kill Bill is suited to teams seeking a flexible billing foundation they can extend through plugins and custom business logic while controlling their infrastructure. Its flexibility is not evidence of a quick or low-effort implementation; estimate that work against your own integrations and operational capacity.
Evaluate license, deployment and ownership before committing
- Check the license and edition boundary. Lago identifies its open-source platform as AGPLv3 and separates it from cloud and premium options. OpenMeter’s project is Apache 2.0, with Kong’s managed offer described separately. Kill Bill identifies its self-hosted open-source core as Apache 2.0. Verify current terms and feature availability with the project before adoption.
- Decide who operates the system. Lago documents self-hosting resources; OpenMeter’s repository lists Kafka, ClickHouse and PostgreSQL and cautions that its official Helm chart is for development; Kill Bill emphasizes self-hosting and extensibility. Plan ownership for data stores, upgrades, monitoring, security and on-call response.
- Assign each billing responsibility. Document which system measures events, rates them, enforces access, creates invoices, collects payment, handles tax and supports customers. Lago describes APIs, SDKs and webhooks; OpenMeter documents billing and Stripe integration; Kill Bill highlights plugins for payment gateways, tax and fraud providers.
Run a proof of concept against your own billing cases
There is no comparable independent benchmark in the cited materials, so vendor scale or throughput statements should not be used as an apples-to-apples ranking. Instead, test realistic workloads and failure cases before selecting a platform:
Rank #2
- Send representative event volumes and verify aggregation, duplicate handling, retries and corrections.
- Change a customer’s plan mid-cycle and reconcile the resulting usage, charges and invoice.
- Test quota or entitlement enforcement and the behavior when prepaid credit runs out.
- Simulate integration failures, then verify recovery and whether billing records remain consistent.
- Review invoice reconciliation and trace how usage data becomes a customer charge.
Use the proof of concept to expose operational and integration work, not just to confirm that a happy-path invoice can be produced.
What the comparison does not establish
This is a vendor-documentation comparison, not a hands-on review, independent security assessment or customer study. No cross-vendor performance ranking or comparable setup-effort measure is established by the cited sources. Product capabilities, license terms, managed-service boundaries and deployment guidance may change; confirm the current details directly before making an adoption decision.
