Its two interchangeable canopies and three leg sets let you change that balance without replacing the entire support. The idea works well according to Amateur Photographer’s 2026 review, but the flexibility has a cost: you must choose the right components, pay extra to expand the system, and learn which combinations suit your kit.
How the modular system works
The platform is built around two magnesium-alloy canopies, called James and Jason, plus three interchangeable carbon-fibre leg sets with three, four, or five sections. The manufacturer’s Kickstarter FAQ and the review say each leg set fits either canopy, so you can change the legs to prioritize portability or height while keeping the same canopy.

That distinction matters: this is not one tripod that telescopes into every possible size. You select a canopy and leg set for the setup you want, and buy additional parts if you want to switch configurations. The system is most compelling for a photographer who expects to use more than one arrangement.

The figures below are product specifications reported by Amateur Photographer in 2026, not independent measurements in this article. Folded length and maximum height show the central trade-off: shorter packed legs give up reach, while the tallest set takes up more room in transit.

| Leg set | Sections | Folded length | Maximum extension | Set weight | Reviewer’s emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travel | Five | 34.5 cm | 123 cm | 807 g | Most compact; narrowest section is 14 mm |
| All-rounder | Four | 45 cm | 140.5 cm | 852 g | A balance of packed size and height |
| Height-focused | Three | 60 cm | 154 cm | 1.083 kg | Larger-diameter tubes and the most height |
Amateur Photographer describes the five-section legs as the travel choice and the four-section set as the natural all-rounder. The three-section set is for buyers who value reach and the larger tubes over a short folded length. Its narrowest-section diameter is not stated in the review’s cited specification, so the table does not infer a figure.
Pick a canopy to match the camera setup
James is the narrower and lighter canopy; Jason is wider and heavier. The review recommends James when portability is the priority and Jason for heavier kit. Both accept heads with a standard 3/8-inch-16 mounting thread, according to 3 Legged Thing’s Kickstarter FAQ.

| Canopy | Width | Weight | Reviewer’s suggested use | Head fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| James | 9 cm | 356 g | Portability | Standard 3/8-inch-16 thread |
| Jason | 14 cm | 419 g | Heavier kit | Standard 3/8-inch-16 thread |
The manufacturer pairs a 55 mm AirHed Orbit with James and a 72 mm version with Jason. Those are suggested pairings in the FAQ, rather than a claim that other compatible heads cannot be used.
Heads are a separate decision—and an extra cost
The Kickstarter FAQ says tripod heads are not included in the campaign rewards. AirHed Orbit was offered separately, with a maker-stated load capacity of 20 kg. Since both canopies use a standard 3/8-inch-16 thread, the manufacturer says heads using that thread are compatible; this is not an independent compatibility test.

- Winston 2.0 is our most stable tripod yet. Brought to you by 3 Legged Thing, this powerful carbon fibre tripod system is from our Pro Range 2.0. It is designed with landscape, studio, and architecture photography in mind, and is capable of supporting heavy burdens in demanding circumstances
At the time of the 2026 campaign, Amateur Photographer reported pledges starting at £269. Digital Camera World’s launch report listed £269 for a canopy-and-legs pledge, £669 for a set with all three leg variations, and a £152 AirHed Orbit add-on pledge. These are dated Kickstarter pledge prices, not current retail quotes. The lower starting price is not the cost of every configuration, and the head adds to it if your selected reward does not include one.
What the design lets you do—and what it cannot decide for you
The review reports that a leg can be removed for monopod or boom use, and that the feet are interchangeable. The launch report also describes using a canopy and feet without legs as a tabletop support. Those options broaden the system beyond a conventional three-legged setup, but each still depends on having the relevant components and choosing a workable configuration.

Leg-angle positions are specified at 23°, 55°, and 80°, and the product listing reports a maximum load of 30 kg. These are maker or product specifications reported by the review, not results of independent load testing here; the 30 kg rating should not be read as a guarantee of stability with every camera and lens combination. Andy Westlake’s review says the Trigger-Pull angle controls make repositioning between positions a single action and feel quicker and more natural than older pull-out adjusters. That is the reviewer’s handling assessment.

Best Value
- Versatile: Winston 2.0 is as versatile as his travel counterparts, this evolution of its predecessor Winston features 3 detachable legs that double as a camera or microphone booms. Alternatively, all 3 legs can be detached with the addition of 3LT footwear and can be converted to a table-top tripod
- Counter Fold Legs: Winston 2.0 is one of the only full-size tripods in the world to feature counter fold legs, enabling the user to fold Winston into just 24-inch
- Max Load to Weight Ratio of 23:1: Winston 2.0 is capable of supporting loads up to 23 times his weight. With a 40 kg payload, Winston is one of the strongest tripods in the world
- Knurled Knobs: Pro Range 2.0 tripods, including Winston, now have Knurled caps on the leg locks, and column lock, as well as on the AirHed Pro available in Winston kits. The knurling creates a grippier surface enabling users to apply greater leverage when loosening or tightening
- Parallel Locking: 3-Legged Thing's unique Parallel Locking system provides better leverage, and greater rigidity, without the hassle of accidental disassembly
Campaign timing and availability are time-sensitive
The 2026 review reported that the Kickstarter campaign was due to close on 9 October 2026 at 1:58 p.m. BST, with general sale through the maker’s website expected after campaign orders shipped. The manufacturer FAQ expected campaign shipping to begin in January 2027, while warning that timing depended on order volume and the selected combinations. Those were expectations, not guarantees; neither establishes current retail availability or delivery timing.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- It makes sense if: you regularly switch between a compact travel setup and a taller or more substantial one, and you value changing leg sets rather than buying another complete tripod.
- It is less compelling if: you need only one fixed configuration, want a head included as standard, or would rather avoid selecting and purchasing components separately.
- Before choosing: decide how much folded length you can carry, how much working height you need, whether James or Jason better suits your kit, and which head you intend to use. Then check the live product listing for current component availability, prices, and centre-column options.
