3 Easy ESP32 Projects: Start With an LED, Then Add Wi-Fi and a Sensor

Build ESP32 skills in a practical sequence: GPIO with an LED, Wi-Fi and HTTP control, then a sensor gateway.

The best way to start with ESP32 is to build three small projects in sequence: blink an LED, switch it from a web page on your local Wi-Fi network, then read a sensor and make its value available over the network. Each project adds one main idea, so you can practice GPIO first, then HTTP and networking, before combining a sensor with connectivity.

What you need before starting

For Espressif’s ESP-IDF v5.5 setup flow, the listed hardware is an ESP32 development board, a USB cable and a computer running Windows, Linux or macOS. Espressif names the ESP32-DevKitC among its official boards. See the ESP-IDF v5.5 getting-started guide for the setup instructions for that version.

A suitable search term when choosing hardware is “ESP32 development board.” Check the particular board’s USB connector and pinout, whether it has an onboard LED, and whether it includes the sensor you intend to use. ESP32 boards do not all have the same components. If the board lacks an LED, you can use an external LED, a suitable current-limiting resistor and a GPIO documented for that board.

Espressif’s beginner workshop is aimed at people with basic electronics and embedded-programming knowledge. Its workshop page estimates three hours for the workshop; that is not a guaranteed completion time for doing these projects independently. The workshop starts with compiling and flashing a hello-world program before moving to blink. See Espressif’s ESP-IDF basic workshop.

1. Blink an LED

Make the board’s onboard LED turn on and off, or wire an external LED to a documented GPIO through a current-limiting resistor. This first project teaches the basic workflow: edit a program, compile it, flash it to the board and use a GPIO pin as an output.

Start with Espressif’s blink example or the corresponding exercise in the workshop. If the LED does not respond, check that the example targets the GPIO connected to your board’s LED; onboard LED pins are not universal. For an external LED, check its orientation and wiring, and confirm that the pin number in the program matches the connection.

2. Switch the LED from a local web page

Next, connect the ESP32 to your local Wi-Fi network and have it serve a simple web page or HTTP endpoints. A phone or computer on the same network can then send a request to turn the LED on or off. Espressif’s workshop uses GET routes for those actions and offers blinking as an optional route.

This adds Wi-Fi and HTTP to the GPIO work from the first project. If you use Arduino-ESP32, its WebServer HelloServer example demonstrates a server for a local network, HTTP requests and JSON responses. The example is on the repository’s moving master branch, so its code may change.

Keep this demonstration on your local network. A beginner web server should not be treated as hardened for public internet access. Espressif’s Wi-Fi soft-AP tutorial warns that its simple provisioning technique is “inherently less secure” and points real-world applications toward Unified Provisioning with security schemes.

3. Read a sensor and share its value

For the third project, read an onboard or external sensor and return its reading in a simple HTTP response. This combines the network work from the web-page project with a new peripheral interface. Espressif’s workshop includes GPIO and I2C exercises and culminates in a sensor gateway that combines connectivity and peripheral control.

First verify that your board actually has the sensor you plan to read. If it does not, select a compatible external sensor and follow the documentation for that sensor and your board. The workshop’s onboard environmental-sensor examples are specific to its hardware; they do not mean every ESP32 development board includes an environmental sensor.

At this stage, debugging can involve the sensor connection or interface as well as the Wi-Fi and HTTP response. Keep the first version simple: read one value and make it available in a response before adding more sensors or features.

How the three projects build on one another

Project New concepts Extra hardware Main debugging scope
Blink an LED GPIO output Possibly none if the board exposes an onboard LED; otherwise an LED and current-limiting resistor One output peripheral
Control an LED over local Wi-Fi Wi-Fi and HTTP, alongside GPIO No additional component is inherent to the project; the board must be able to join the chosen network Network connection and LED output
Read a sensor over the network Sensor interface and integration with connectivity Depends on whether the selected board includes a suitable sensor Network connection and sensor

This is a practical learning progression, not an objective ranking. It follows the progression in Espressif’s workshop from blink, to HTTP LED control, to a sensor gateway.

Choose a software path and keep it consistent

Two useful starting points are Espressif’s ESP-IDF setup guide and the Arduino-ESP32 WebServer example. The sources establish both options, but do not establish that one is universally easier. Choose based on the environment you want to learn, then follow the setup and example instructions for that environment rather than mixing steps from different toolchains.

The ESP-IDF guide linked above documents stable v5.5. The Arduino example is on the moving master branch. Check the current installation guidance and the documentation for your exact board before following version-specific steps.
