Some Dockerized services become more useful as they collect history, preserve configuration, or grow into a personal library—but Docker itself does not improve an app just by keeping its container running. The value depends on the application recording useful data, persistent storage surviving container replacement, and you maintaining the deployment.
Which Docker containers gain value over time?
Home Assistant, Grafana, and Immich illustrate three different kinds of accumulated value: a longer sensor record, saved dashboards and configuration, and a growing personal media collection. Their data needs differ, so each service needs a persistence plan suited to what it stores.

| Service | What accumulates | What must persist |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant | Eligible sensor history and long-term statistics | Recorded history and statistics in the configured storage |
| Grafana | Dashboards, users, and configuration | Its database and other data, stored in a Docker volume or bind mount |
| Immich | Your personal media library and supporting application state | State across Postgres, Redis, and the filesystem |
Home Assistant: sensor history that answers longer-term questions
Home Assistant records state changes by default and retains state history for 10 days. For eligible sensors, it records short-term statistics every 5 minutes and long-term statistics hourly. Short-term statistics follow the state-history retention period; long-term statistics are not automatically deleted. That longer record can help you look back at energy use or temperature across months and years, as described in the Home Assistant long-term statistics documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNot every entity qualifies
Long-term statistics require a recorded numeric sensor with a state class. Excluding an entity from the recorder prevents its statistics from being collected. Measurement sensors can have average, minimum, and maximum statistics; total and total-increasing sensors can have totals. If a unit changes to one that cannot be converted, statistics may stop until the mismatch is corrected.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
This makes Home Assistant’s accumulated value useful but conditional: check that the sensor you care about is eligible and included. The record depends on configuration and retained storage, and it can be removed manually; it is not indestructible.
Grafana: dashboards are useful only if they survive replacement
Grafana’s Docker image uses an embedded SQLite database by default for configuration, users, dashboards, and related data. But data written only to a container’s filesystem lasts only as long as that container. Remove the container and those changes are discarded. Grafana’s Docker setup documentation recommends persistent storage through a Docker volume or bind mount.

- Value NAS with RAID for centralized storage and backup for all your devices. Check out the LS 700 for enhanced features, cloud capabilities, macOS 26, and up to 7x faster performance than the LS 200.
- Connect the LinkStation to your router and enjoy shared network storage for your devices. The NAS is compatible with Windows and macOS*, and Buffalo's US-based support is on-hand 24/7 for installation walkthroughs. *Only for macOS 15 (Sequoia) and earlier. For macOS 26, check out our LS 700 series.
- Subscription-Free Personal Cloud – Store, back up, and manage all your videos, music, and photos and access them anytime without paying any monthly fees.
- Storage Purpose-Built for Data Security – A NAS designed to keep your data safe, the LS200 features a closed system to reduce vulnerabilities from 3rd party apps and SSL encryption for secure file transfers.
- Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.
That distinction matters during maintenance: replacing a container need not mean losing the dashboards and configuration you have built up, provided the relevant data is stored persistently. Leaving a container running for months is not, by itself, a durability plan.
Immich: a library that grows with your collection
Immich can become a more useful place to browse and manage a personal media collection as more of that collection is added. Its application state is distributed across Postgres, Redis, and the filesystem, rather than living in one interchangeable container. The Immich scaling guide describes that storage architecture.

Immich also exposes performance metrics for Prometheus collection and Grafana visualization, and supports structured JSON logs for aggregation tools, according to its monitoring documentation. These provide operational context for a service you continue to run; they do not establish that search, recognition, or performance automatically improves with time.
Check filesystem compatibility for Postgres
Immich’s requirements documentation says its Postgres data location must use a filesystem that supports ownership and permissions. It lists EXT2/3/4, ZFS, APFS, BTRFS, and XFS as examples. Treat this as a compatibility requirement to verify against the current documentation and your setup, not as a universal ranking or recommendation of filesystems.

Persistence is not the same as backup
A Docker volume or bind mount can preserve data when a container is removed, but persistence alone does not protect against every form of loss. Plan storage and backups around the service’s actual data paths and databases. A NAS hard drive is one possible way to provide persistent local storage, but the cited documentation does not prescribe a drive, capacity, NAS, RAID arrangement, or backup plan. Redundancy and backup solve different problems; do not treat a single drive as a complete safety strategy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Home Assistant Container also runs on a Linux system that you provide and maintain, as its FAQ explains. Across all three examples, useful accumulated state depends on more than uptime: the right information must be recorded, the storage must survive container replacement, and the underlying system must be maintained.
