The right Mac screen recorder depends on which audio you need: your microphone for narration, system sound from the Mac, or both. Start with Apple’s built-in Screenshot or QuickTime workflow for a quick narrated recording; choose OBS Studio when you need configurable desktop or app audio on a supported macOS version; consider ScreenFlow or Camtasia if editing is part of the job.
What “screen recording with audio” means on a Mac
Microphone audio and system audio are separate inputs. A microphone records your voice or another sound near the Mac; system audio is playback from macOS or an application. Selecting a microphone will not capture music, video dialogue, or other app playback. If you need both narration and Mac playback, confirm that the recorder and macOS version support both sources, then select them separately where the app allows it.

For a tutorial or quick demonstration with your voice, Apple’s built-in screen recording workflow is a practical starting point. Press Shift-Command-5, choose the full screen or a selected portion, open Options, and select a microphone before recording. Apple’s current support instruction says to choose Include System Audio to record system audio in macOS 27 Golden Gate or later. That version condition matters: the instruction does not establish system-audio capture in earlier macOS releases. Apple also notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may prevent their windows from being recorded. If you hear audio feedback while monitoring, Apple recommends lowering monitoring volume or using headphones.
2. OBS Studio: more control over audio sources
OBS is suited to recordings where you need to configure display or app capture and choose audio sources. According to the OBS macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide, OBS Studio 30 and later on macOS 13 Ventura and later can use the macOS Audio Capture source to capture all desktop audio or audio from one application. OBS also says its macOS Screen Capture source can capture screen content and audio on macOS 13 and later; see its macOS Screen Capture source guide.

Audio setup involves choosing the appropriate source rather than simply selecting a microphone. On older macOS releases, OBS says desktop-audio capture requires additional software. Its guide names VB-CABLE, Loopback, and Sound Siphon as possible routes, with different setup and per-app capture behavior. Treat that as an extra configuration step, not a plug-and-play feature.
3. ScreenFlow: recording and editing in one workflow
ScreenFlow is a candidate when you want to record and then edit the footage. Telestream’s ScreenFlow 10 guide documents choosing screen, camera, microphone, and computer-audio capture methods. Because that documentation is for version 10, it supports the general recording-and-editing use case, not claims about the current release’s exact controls, system requirements, or price. Check Telestream’s current documentation for those details before choosing a version.

How do I screen record with audio on a Mac?
- Decide which sound you need. Choose microphone narration, system/app playback, or both. They are distinct recording sources.
- Choose a recorder that supports that source on your macOS version. Apple documents microphone selection in Screenshot and QuickTime; its system-audio instruction is specifically for macOS 27 Golden Gate or later. OBS documents desktop or app audio capture with OBS Studio 30+ on macOS 13+.
- Select the screen area and audio inputs before recording. In Screenshot, use Shift-Command-5, select a full display or portion, open Options, and choose a microphone for narration. In OBS, add the relevant macOS audio capture source and screen capture source.
- Make a short test recording. Play back the file and check both picture and sound. A quick test can reveal a missing input, muted source, or app window that cannot be captured before you record a longer session.
How do I record internal or system audio on a Mac?
Use a recorder’s system-audio capture path rather than expecting a microphone to record cleanly what the Mac is playing. For OBS Studio 30 or later on macOS 13 or later, OBS documents macOS Audio Capture for desktop audio or a chosen application. Apple’s cited instruction for Include System Audio is limited to macOS 27 Golden Gate or later. If you run an older macOS version with OBS, the documented alternatives involve additional routing software, and their setup and per-app behavior differ.
Can I record my voice and Mac audio at the same time?
Yes, when the chosen recorder and macOS version support both inputs and you select them. Microphone narration and system playback are different sources; for example, an OBS setup may use a microphone input alongside macOS Audio Capture. Apple documents microphone recording in its built-in workflow, but the cited system-audio option is limited to macOS 27 Golden Gate or later. Confirm the sources in a short test recording rather than assuming one audio selection captures both.

Why is my Mac screen recording silent?
- The wrong source is selected: a microphone records nearby speech, not the Mac’s system or app playback. Select a supported system-audio source when that is what you need.
- Your voice is missing: check that a microphone is selected in Screenshot or QuickTime, or that the microphone source is configured in your recorder.
- You are using an unsupported version or capture route: OBS’s documented macOS Audio Capture route requires OBS Studio 30+ and macOS 13+. On older macOS releases, OBS says extra routing software is required for desktop audio.
- The app blocks recording: Apple notes that some windows, such as Apple TV, may not be recordable.
- Feedback or monitoring obscures the sound: Apple recommends lowering monitoring volume or using headphones if audio feedback occurs.
What about Camtasia?
Camtasia is another recording-and-editing option, particularly if its tutorial-oriented editing tools suit your workflow. TechSmith’s support guide describes installing or confirming a system-audio component and selecting system audio in the recorder. That setup step is part of the choice; verify the current Camtasia version’s macOS and hardware compatibility with TechSmith before installing.
