For quicker-feeling navigation, try lowering Android’s Window animation scale, Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale. They shorten the playback of visual effects; they do not make the processor faster or prove that apps will compute faster. Start with a lower value, see how the phone feels, and restore the original setting if the motion becomes too abrupt.
What these settings change—and what they don’t
Developer Options is a built-in Android settings screen for configuring system behaviors used to profile and debug app performance. Android’s guidance says that lower window and transition animation scales make those animations play faster. In everyday use, that can make moving between screens feel more immediate because you wait through less visual motion.

That is a change to animation timing, not a general performance upgrade: it does not establish that the phone’s processor is faster, that apps will finish tasks sooner, or that a slow app has been fixed. Android does not specify one scale value as best for every phone or person.
How to turn on Developer Options
On Android 4.2 and later, enable Developer Options by tapping the device’s Build number seven times. The exact menu path varies by manufacturer. Google Pixel phones put Build number under Settings > About phone; Samsung Galaxy instructions place it under Settings > About phone > Software information. The Developer Options screen may also be located or named differently by device maker or Android version.

- Open Settings and search for Build number if you cannot find it in the About section.
- Tap Build number seven times. If prompted, enter your screen-lock PIN or password. Look for the on-screen confirmation that developer mode is enabled.
- Return to Settings and search for Developer options if it is not visible in the menu.

Three animation scales to try
In Developer Options, look for each setting by its name. Menu organization and available scale values vary by device. Lower the current value one step at a time, then use the phone normally to decide whether the pacing feels better.

Android specifically documents lower window and transition scales as faster animation playback; it does not provide a universal recommended value or quantify a phone-wide speed gain. The scales are preferences, so the most suitable setting is the one that feels responsive without making motion uncomfortable.
Why not use other Developer Options as speed switches?
Some settings sound like performance boosts but have specific technical purposes, not proven benefits for every user or app.

- Force GPU rendering forces GPU use for 2D drawing in apps that were not already using GPU rendering by default. That does not mean every app will run better with it.
- Disable HW overlays turns off a system mechanism that Android says can let apps use less processing power. It is not a sound blanket recommendation for making a phone faster.
- Background process limit caps how many processes can run in the background at once. It is an app-debugging control, not a general-purpose consumer optimization.
Android documents these as specific rendering and app-debugging controls rather than universal speed settings: Developer options: hardware-accelerated rendering and Developer options: monitoring and debugging.

If the phone feels too abrupt, revisit Developer Options and raise the relevant animation scale to its previous value or another available value you prefer. If a setting is hard to locate, search Settings for its exact name; manufacturers can move or rename menus. Keep in mind that changes to visual timing are a matter of feel, not a benchmark of device performance.
