Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best freelance website depends on how you want to find clients: pitch on posted projects, sell a packaged service, apply to a curated network, respond to job listings, or attract clients through a portfolio. This guide compares 29 options by that model, so you can focus on sites that fit your skills, experience, location, and appetite for competition.
Start with the way you want to find work
Freelance websites are not interchangeable. A marketplace may provide proposals and payment tools; a job board may only point you to an employer’s application page; a portfolio network helps clients discover your work but may not manage contracts. Decide which process suits you before comparing fees.

- Pitch on posted projects: Use an open marketplace if you are prepared to write proposals, compete for listings, and negotiate scope.
- Sell a defined service: Choose a packaged-service marketplace if your work can be described with a clear deliverable, price, and turnaround.
- Apply to a curated network: Consider a vetted network if you have relevant experience and are willing to complete its screening process.
- Search listings: Use a job board or aggregator if you prefer applying to advertised opportunities. Check whether each role is genuinely freelance and follow the listing to its original source.
- Get discovered through samples: Build a portfolio presence if clients in your field hire based on visible work and style.
- Match locally: For in-person services, check that the platform operates in your city and supports your type of work.
Compare the whole cost, not just the headline commission: proposal credits, subscriptions, payment processing, and client-side charges can affect what you take home. Fees and terms change, so check the platform’s current pricing and contract rules before accepting work.

Fiverr
Fiverr centers on predefined service listings. It can suit repeatable work with a clear scope, such as a specific design deliverable or editing package. A 2026 comparison published by Upwork reports a 20% freelancer service fee; check Fiverr’s current terms before pricing a service. Upwork’s 2026 comparison also explains how this listing model differs from proposal-led work.
Upwork
Upwork supports proposals for posted projects as well as hourly and fixed-price contracts, and it also offers a catalog for pre-scoped services. That flexibility can support one-off assignments or longer client relationships, but active pitching takes time. Upwork’s 2026 comparison reports a service fee of 0%–15%, depending on the contract and other factors; confirm the fee shown for your specific contract. The same guide lists Freelancer Plus at $19.99 per month at the time of publication, a plan price that may change.
Freelancer.com
A bidding marketplace with project and contest formats. Read the terms of each contest carefully: entering does not mean you will be selected or paid.
Guru
A broad freelance marketplace that, according to its platform description, offers SafePay and paid membership tiers. Check the current membership costs and payment conditions before relying on either feature.
PeoplePerHour
Supports proposals and hourly or project-based work. Its reported buyer-based sliding fee structure makes it important to check how fees apply to your billing history with a particular client.
Contra
Positions itself around commission-free work and portfolio and client-management features. “Commission-free” does not necessarily mean cost-free: check for client charges, payment-processing fees, or paid plan features.
Vetted talent networks
These networks curate or screen talent rather than functioning solely as open listing boards. They may be a better fit for experienced specialists, but acceptance is not guaranteed and work availability can depend on skills and client demand.

A specialist network for WordPress professionals. Its narrow focus can help WordPress experts find relevant work, but it is not a general-purpose freelance marketplace.

Job boards and aggregators
These sites help surface opportunities, but a listing does not necessarily mean the site handles contracting, payment, or dispute resolution. Aggregators may send you elsewhere to apply, and remote job boards often include employee roles alongside freelance listings.

A remote job board. Confirm that each listing is contract or freelance work and review the client’s terms before proceeding.
Creative portfolio and design platforms
For visual work, a strong portfolio can matter as much as the platform. Keep samples current, make your role in collaborative projects clear, and check whether a site’s discovery or lead-generation features require a paid plan.
Behance

Dribbble
A design portfolio and client-lead platform. Some lead-generation features are paid, so check what is included before subscribing.

A paid curated lead service, not a guarantee that a lead will become a client or paid project. Judge the subscription against the relevance of leads you can actually pursue.
Reedsy
A curated publishing marketplace for editors, designers, ghostwriters, marketers, and translators. It is aimed at professionals serving authors and publishing projects rather than general freelance work.
How to choose a first platform
- Define the service you sell. Write down your deliverable, target client, and whether the work is repeatable or custom. A clearly packaged service points toward a listing model; bespoke work may call for proposals or direct applications.
- Match the platform to your experience. Beginners may find an open marketplace or job board easier to explore than a screened network, while experienced specialists may benefit from a relevant curated network.
- Check geography and work type. Confirm that the platform accepts workers in your country or city, supports your category, and distinguishes freelance contracts from employee roles where that matters.
- Calculate your net earnings. Include commissions, subscriptions, proposal credits, processing charges, and unpaid time spent bidding or completing screening.
- Read payment and dispute terms. Understand when payment is released, what documentation is required, what protections apply, and how disputes are handled. Platform tools do not eliminate every risk.
- Start with one or two channels. Try a platform that fits your service model and one additional channel that reaches your target clients. Track qualified leads, time spent, conversion to paid work, and net earnings before expanding.
For example, a beginner offering a repeatable design package could test a gig-listing marketplace while building a portfolio. A developer who wants custom, longer projects might test proposal-based work and apply to a specialist network that fits their experience. These are ways to test fit, not promises of finding a client.
Protect your time, income, and information
Before starting, agree on scope, deliverables, revisions, deadlines, payment milestones, and ownership of the finished work in writing. Keep project records and use the platform’s required payment process when its terms depend on doing so. Treat unusually vague listings, requests for unpaid substantial work, or pressure to move payment outside an agreed process as reasons to pause and verify.

Freelance platform work also carries risks beyond whether a listing is genuine. A 2024 report from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, focused particularly on women online freelance workers in the APEC context, discusses concerns including delayed payment, harassment, exploitation, unfair treatment, and loss of usual social benefits. These are documented concerns, not incidence rates for every freelancer. Read the APEC report.
