The right choice depends on your device and habits: capacity tiers, usable space, and storage features vary by model.
What changes between 256GB and 512GB?
512GB provides twice the nominal storage capacity of 256GB. That does not mean every device will show that much as available for personal files: the operating system and preinstalled content also use storage. Photos, video, apps, music, downloads, and other files all compete for the remaining space. Apple describes these categories in its iPhone and iPad storage guidance.

There is no reliable universal count of photos, apps, or video hours that fits either capacity. File size varies with the device, recording format, settings, and content. Treat fixed file-count claims skeptically unless they specify those conditions.

| Consideration | 256GB is more likely to fit if… | 512GB is more likely to fit if… |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | You keep a modest local library or move older files elsewhere. | You regularly keep large libraries or video files on the device. |
| Large apps and files | Large apps, games, and work files are occasional. | You frequently install large apps or create and retain big files. |
| Offline access | You download a limited amount and refresh it periodically. | You travel often or keep substantial music, video, or other content available offline. |
| Storage management | You are comfortable reviewing storage and offloading files. | You prefer more headroom and less frequent cleanup. |
| Cost | The higher-capacity model’s price premium is not worthwhile for your use. | The exact model’s premium is acceptable for the extra room. |
This is a decision guide, not a tested usage profile. Check the price difference for the exact device and market before deciding.
#1 Best Overall
- Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); up to 130MB/s read speed; USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Backward compatible with USB 2.0
- Secure file encryption and password protection(2)
How to estimate the storage you need
Check what you use now
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → [device] Storage to review available space and usage by app. Look at the largest categories and whether they are growing. If your current device is already close to full, consider whether a 256GB model would leave enough room for the way you use it.
Account for what you plan to keep
Think about how long you keep photos and videos, whether you record or edit large files, how many large apps and games you use, and what you need when offline. A device used mostly for streaming and everyday apps has different storage demands from one used to record video or carry a large offline library.

Compare the exact models
Do not assume every device offers both capacities or handles storage the same way. Compare the exact model’s available tiers, usable space, storage features, and price premium. The iPhone comparison page is one example of a model-specific lineup; other device makers may offer different configurations and features.
Can cloud storage make 256GB enough?
Cloud storage and built-in device storage are separate. For example, Apple’s iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage can keep full-resolution originals in iCloud and smaller, space-saving copies on an iPhone or iPad, provided there is enough iCloud space. This can reduce local storage used by photos and videos, but it does not add internal capacity for every app or file. Check the current service allowance and your account’s available space rather than treating cloud storage as an automatic substitute for a larger device.

Can an external drive replace 512GB?
An external drive or compatible SD card can support an offloading or backup workflow. Apple documents accessing files on supported connected drives and SD cards through Files and compatible apps in its external storage guide. Compatibility, connectors or adapters, file format, and power needs can affect whether a drive works with a particular device.
External storage is not the same as expanding built-in capacity: it does not universally extend the space available to apps. It is most useful when you are willing to transfer or archive files and can work with them from the connected storage when needed.
