The examples below span simple navigation bars, sticky headers, sidebars, overlays, mega menus, and menus built around search or a primary action. Treat them as patterns to compare—not as a ranking or proof that one design performs better.
24 website menu design examples and free templates
Colorlib’s 2026 collection presents 24 entries: 20 Colorlib menu templates, three menu patterns from its 2026 snippets, and a uiCookies pack containing eight menu designs. Those group counts describe the collection, not an independent design study. The examples are useful for seeing how different navigation patterns are arranged and adapted; inspect the individual demo to understand its actual behavior.
Simple horizontal navigation
A single-row menu can suit a small site, landing page, or documentation site with a short list of destinations. Colorlib’s V02 uses a horizontal bar on larger screens and changes to a hamburger menu on mobile. That compact mobile state saves header space, but visitors must open it to see the links.

Sticky navigation keeps destinations available while a visitor scrolls through a long page. Colorlib’s V01 changes from transparent to solid as the page scrolls; V04 pairs a top bar with sticky navigation. Check that a fixed header does not obscure page content or consume too much of a small screen.
Sidebar navigation
A sidebar moves links out of the header and can work for blogs, portfolios, or personal sites. Colorlib’s V19 turns into an off-canvas menu on smaller devices, so check both the desktop sidebar and the mobile panel rather than judging from one screenshot.
Full-screen overlay
A full-screen overlay gives navigation visual prominence and can suit a creative studio, portfolio, or one-page site with relatively few links. Colorlib’s V20 is an example. Because the overlay takes over the screen, visitors should be able to identify how to close it and return to the page.

Mega menu
A mega menu opens a larger panel that can expose categories and deeper destinations. Colorlib’s V18 combines links and images on desktop and simplifies to text links on mobile. Webflow’s guidance identifies ecommerce, SaaS, and educational sites with deep category structures as possible fits, while emphasizing accessible interaction. A wide panel is not automatically useful: organize it around visitors’ categories and tasks, not just the amount of content the site has.

Some menus make a specific task more prominent than browsing. Colorlib’s V12 and V13 include search; V08 emphasizes a call to action; V11 is framed around booking; and V15 includes a cart dropdown for stores. These are examples of different priorities, not evidence that any particular treatment increases conversions.

Hamburger menus and drawers
A hamburger button can conserve header space by hiding navigation until it is opened. That can be a poor fit if visitors need immediate access to several critical pages. Figma’s hamburger-menu guidance recommends considering which destinations must remain visible and putting high-priority actions first when using a collapsed menu.
Choose a menu by the visitor’s task and the site’s depth
Compare candidate patterns against four practical questions before choosing one.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- How deep is the information structure? A small set of destinations may fit a simple bar or overlay. Several layers of categories may call for a mega menu, provided its groups are easy to scan.
- What is the visitor trying to do? Decide whether people mainly need to browse, search for a destination, book, shop, sign in, or contact the business. Make the relevant action easy to find without letting secondary actions compete with it.
- What does the menu become on a narrow screen? Check whether it collapses behind a toggle, opens off-canvas, becomes a text-only mega menu, or uses a full-screen overlay. Do not assume the desktop layout simply shrinks.
- Can people read and operate it comfortably? Check keyboard access, clear labels, logical focus order, predictable opening and closing, adequate spacing, contrast, and behavior when text is enlarged.
For a restaurant example, Figma’s responsive-design guidance places location, hours, and a reservation action near the top, ahead of menu content. The broader lesson is to put the visitor’s urgent task where it is easy to find. Figma also recommends planning breakpoints and using auto layout, constraints, and reusable components to keep a design consistent across screen sizes.
Accessibility checks for a website menu
Navigation is only useful when visitors can identify and operate it. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative’s design guidance recommends putting menus where people expect them and making menus and their items identifiable. It also advises sizing content to its text and allowing layouts to adapt when text is enlarged or a page is zoomed.

- Use labels that communicate what a control does; do not rely on color alone to show a selected or active menu item.
- Provide enough whitespace for touch targets and for people with reduced dexterity.
- Make keyboard movement and focus order logical, and ensure that opening a menu does not strand keyboard users.
- For a mega menu, support mouse, keyboard, and assistive technology, with predictable opening and closing behavior.
- For a hamburger menu, give the toggle an accessible name and ensure screen-reader users can understand whether the menu is open or closed.
These checks apply to the implemented menu, not merely its mockup. A visually appealing demo does not by itself establish that its keyboard behavior, screen-reader support, or accessibility is adequate.
